Agree

That losing practice match between Casey and Coburg can't have been his best. Surprised that Spargo is a possibility after such a long lay off. His pre-injury form in 2023 wasn't stellar

He’s a very very good reader of the play and a fantastic kick. He plays if fit enough.

He’s the very definition of vanilla, both in skills and personality

You know him personally do you Roost? I don’t mind him, he works hard and gets in the right positions, but we all wish he would finish better.

His skills around the ground are fine but when the heat is really on I don’t think he can go with it. As always I’m just an observer and would love to be proved wrong.

I, too, am hoping for Spargo and Turner as the ones who come in. Spargo gives us higher quality entries into F50 and I reckon we are a better team with him in it. And Turner is probably our best contested mark next to Petty.

The inclusion of Turner does not excite me. He has been poor in preseason games and I’m still unsure if he can make it as a forward.

I'm more confident him doing something than fritsch

With Windsor out, aren't we short more a defensive mid/small?

If so, thinking Woey maybe or a Spargo

Fritter is just a little out of form at the moment, he'll work through it. Talent doesn't vanish in the space of 12 games.

We shouldn't forget that we asked a lot of Bailey last year with a young, undersized forward line. JVR is still learning the traps and has spent chunks of time in the ruck. Often Bailey was the key banana out of the goal square with the no.1 defender on his hammer. We were also in poor form and without Petracca for those last 12 games in 2024.

That said, if they are moving him to half forward I'd also question why that's necessary. Fritsch is the perfect medium/tall forward on the 3rd best defender, close to goal IMO.

I think Binman might be right from on the pod, maybe Jeffo played Fritters normal role last week? Who's to say if Fritsch played that role he wouldn't have had a bigger goal return than Jefferson?

Ultimately they want Jefferson in the side.

Fritter is one of our few elite kicks. If he can get, say 10-15 kicks at half forward he'll really help our inside 50 kicks. And both he and Jefferson can play together.

That said, I reckon Turner will come straight back in, probably at Jefferson's expense.

Fritter probably has to play HB if Turner is in the side.

Turner straight in for AJ ???

In: Turner, Spargo, Woewodin

Out: Sharp, AJ, Windsor.

I think the club are desperate to get Spargo into the side. Adding experience to our forward half is critical imo.

It astounds me how little respect fans have for fritsch. Not sure who they want to bring on to replace him

There really isn't that much of a choice period. Especially like for like. He's a very unique type of forward. He's highly skilled and plays much better in dry conditions and space.

Maybe Milkshake is the closest fit.

I think a few are frustrated by him just not firing a single goal on Sunday.

Last year he had an iffy season. And there were times he didn't seem to lay many tackles. So I think there is room for a little criticism.

It's tough for him because he's really our only player that's likely to kick 50 plus. Maybe Roo in a couple of years if he's not rucking so much.

Fritta is a classic confidence player so he just needs to get a bit of form under his belt. To be fair he's in a team that hasn't always provided it's fwds with great i50 entries.

Yep. Of course, brain fade.

Jefferson gets his chance. I'm looking forward to watching him try to take it.

I reckon he is likely to come out for AJ.

Sharp was good... ?

Stupid question but I'm assuming you can just rock up at the gate & by a ticket? Last couple of years I've been lucky to get medallion club seats. I know during covid you had to book.

I'd anticipate a crowd of no more than 25k. You should be able to get a GA for $27 (?) but sometimes stadiums pull a swifty and say GA is sold out.

Turner at Jeffo's expense??? What planet are u on! Turner shizzenhuisen in praccys vs a player who kicked 2 in a losing side ! Plus Jeffo named at CHF! U are dreamin!

He mentioned in the video that he’s been dealing with that Achilles issue for a few years, so I’m hoping now that he’s had the operation he could get back to his best.

He was ok. I’d like to see him as the sub. Could come on with his leg speed in the last and glide past other players

I’m hoping we go with:

Bowey.      Petty.        Salem

Howes.      Lever.       Mcdonald

Langdon.    Oliver.      Lindsay

Sparrow.    Jefferson.  Henderson

Chandler.    JVR.         Fritsch

Gawn.          Trac.        Viney

Rivers       Spargo      Langford    Turner

Sub: Sharp

Rivers and Lindsay can cover Windsor’s backline rotations.

JVR will have to second ruck.

I am going to feel so good about the side when McVee, Pickett and Windsor are all playing….

With AMW out all season, and Hore, McVee and now Windsor unavailable, we seem a bit short on small defender stock.

Rivers back and someone into the midfield (Langford?)?

gotta be

hopefully sestan can come on quickly in his new role as a half-back at casey

Well, the good thing about playing on sunday is we have a bit more time to debate the who and why and all scrape each others' ankles like we love to do!

I wonder if we're aiming to mock North by fielding a younger team than them?
Currently (including extended benches) our average age is just 2 months older than theirs, and games played just 0.7 higher!
The right combos (e.g. if they play with Pink, Teakle, Stephens and Tucker) and we really will be the younger side.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
