Yes - if you look at the post I made last year which started this thread, I mentioned Woewodin - seems even more likely from the source I have he will be back in WA.

His management expressed disappointment at how often he was played as sub last year which stunted his development. Outside of NM this year, don't think he's played any other games.

I'd be intrigued to know what his manager actually expects from the club if he/she is disappointed.

He has had quite a few chances and sadly for the romantics (me included) he really hasn't set the world on fire and always looks a step or two to slow in the bigtime.

He hardly sets the world on fire in the twos either averaging about 16-17 touches a game and a goal every 4 weeks. He looks nothing more than an average twos player which although admirable and better than most will achieve, is just too far away from having an impact in the ones.

McVee has a very high ceiling. He is not a 'lockdown' defender exclusively.

Half back is now one of the most important positions on the ground as a lot of scoring relies on good ball use out of the back half.

He is a great runner, moves well through traffic and is a good kick.

We would be extremely unlucky to lose him off the back of this all around terrible year, where he is struggled to build fitness and form off the back of an interrupted pre-season.

If he was playing rebounding half back role and playing it well then I'd be far more interested in going harder to retain him.

Just from my own memories of late last year when he was played up the ground and a lot more midfield minutes, he just looked completely lost there.

There is nothing wrong with that and he still has a ripping 'one wood' as a high quality back pocket.

I just think we have greater needs and as he has currency, I wouldn't be against him moving if the right deal popped up.

I’m on Juddys side, he should be a rebounding half back and not a defender. He and Bowey would compliment each other. So question is, who do we have to play the lock down small defender role? Kolt, Woey, Viney or Salo? AMW was a lock, but we won’t see him for a while.

I see Starcevich is contemplating a move, could he be a piece of the puzzle we need.

Juddys signature is a must!!

He played 2 games there with no midfield training,2nd game on Daicos who was playing for 3 brownlow votes and Melbourne had already cashed out

Is this common knowledge that he was promised the role - been reported somewhere? Or just a bit of internet gossip from people trying to make sense/reasons of why he hasn't re-signed yet?

In fairness, he wasn't the first and won't be the last to cop a torching from young Daicos. But that performance from the team was shocking that night and I'd say it was by far the worst game I've seen Judd play and probably the reason why I think him playing up the ground isn't warranted.

If you're keen for midfield minutes then when given the opportunity you'd think that the player would be giving there 100% all at every contest. He was lead to 40 odd contests from Daicos and only touched the pill a few times and from what I remember, went at about 5% DE and gave away as many free kicks as he had touches.

Now one poor performance shouldn't and won't put a complete line through someone but he his holding off re-signing due to frustrations of not getting more game time up the ground, I'd ask simply ask him what his preferences are:

  • Develop up the ground in the twos

  • Continue being a very important role player as a lock down defender in the ones

I'm wondering if during his junior days he was playing up the ground further to an average standard which is the reason every team looked passed him during the draft.

He should be feeling incredibly lucky and thankful we have a defined role for him that he clearly excels in.

Made the Ozzie team in the U/16s as a midfielder then we all got hit by covid, apparently lived a 4 hr drive to Perth

i'm old enough to remember (and attend) the aussie rules carnival (which was held somewhat erratically)

Comeon Judd you know you want to just sign the contract young man so we can get on with things that are more important than going home. If it’s more money comeon FD pay up, you know Juddie we picked YOU time now for You to pick US.❤️💙👍😁

An important player. If we had a 2025 era game plan structures he'd be an important linebreaker off half back which is one of the key roles in 2025 era game plans.

Agreed. I find it surprising some have been very quick to trivialise his abilities and place in the side, seemingly in light of him going back west. He's also one of the only users of the ball that I regularly have full confidence in, something we're sorely lacking in totality.

Hypothetical

You're a player in a 'foreign' state playing in a team whose prospects aren't looking too flash. You're asked to play a role you don't particularly find uber satisfying .

You're wind of interest from 'home'.

You decide after talking with your manager to halt current proceedings til season's end .

All hypothetical of course

Wouldn't be far off the mark @beelzebub

Throw in Rivers as another who doesn’t like his role.

I’ve always thought McVee most reminds me of Heath Shaw who played his whole career as a back pocket who locked down when required but also had a sweeper type role and got plenty of the footy (and used it well). You let that guy take the kickouts. Switch to them. And they still get their 20 touches without having to run like mad like a flanker should.

And if you’ve got good upfield defence and mobile talls you alternate the tricky match ups anyway.

I’ll be very annoyed if Judd leaves. A second round pick is a lottery ticket that you lose as often as you win. Sure, you can do better than Judd but odds are you’ll do worse. Plus a 3-4 year lag until the guy starts producing more often than not.

I’ll also be subjected to watching a heap more Blake Howes which might drive me insane. AMW has talent but could never make it through a preseason, was a mile off consistent afl footy in 2024 and then blew his knee to pieces, he’s a hope and a prayer not a solution.

He is a great player. We definitely do not want to lose him. The chances of getting a good player with whatever pick is not great. The last 3 to 5 drafts have seen anything past pick 10 or so being a 1 in 3 lottery at best of getting a half decent player.

sorry, wrong thread. was for the thread on state of origin

Hang on. I thought the inside line was the signed and the reporting was just delayed?

I hope we are not being held ransom by him or his management.

I queried this earlier in this thread, where does it come out that a player doesn't like his role? I always find it interesting reading these comments and wonder if it's just internet gossip or if people have genuine intel.

Rivers has had a lot of midfield time this year. He's had some good moments there as well although I like him a lot more as a rebounding defender personally.

Does he want more midfield time or does he want to return to the back flank?

Yes Juddy is clearly talented and I have no doubt showed some wonderful moments there. But did he peak there as a mid? By his U/18 year I'm fairly certain he was around the 12th to 15th player picked from the WAFL as a rookie. So he again, he clearly wasn't setting the world on fire higher up the ground.

I feel I have spoken a lot in this thread and some of my comments might come across like I'm negative towards him. I'm actually not and think he's playing the back pocket role beautifully and is easily best 22 and I definitely don't want to lose him.

I'm happy to hear the club has made its offer and sticking to it. Players have far too much pull. In saying that, kudos to Juddy by cooling his jets and backing himself in for either a longer term or more cashola.

I really hope we keep him and would only let him go if he was part of a plan to bring in another high quality player (Jacko) - not draft picks.

Big difference between playing a midfield role and a Backman's role fitness wise the time against Daicos you could see that would have thought they would have worked on that pre season obviously not.

This.

Was said on here that announcement was meant to occur two weeks ago? Most reports state that he is not way near close to signing a new deal.

Nah, it’s just a media vendetta against Melbourne. Something, something Tom Morris, something, something, MFC are the victims. Everything is hunky dory.

To be fair, the two posters who said Judd has re-signed have very good track record of posting solid info and not total BS. They most definitely have a better track record than Tom Morris!

For clarity and with all sincerity, that’s not what was implied in my statement, nor were they targeted in my comment.

It doesn't look good but devils advocate, he's been pretty poor this year and that's mainly due to injury interrupted preseason/season. Could he be banking on a big 7 weeks to finish the season to raise his stocks? Probably a long shot.

End of the day he has shown he will be a decent player but he's no gamebreaker. If he wants back to WA see what we can get and move on.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
