Now that the AFL Drafts are done and dusted, attention turns to the 2025 Supplementary Selection Period (SSP) which presents the final opportunity for players to secure an AFL list spot ahead of the start of next season.

A limited number of clubs have left list spots open and now have the option to offer train-on opportunities to prospective players with the objective of filling those vacancies by February 2025.

The first window of opportunity in the post draft period begins tomorrow and the following clubs are expected to be involved in the SSP process:

Carlton - the Blues have two spots open and their most noted invitee is former Hawthorn No. 6 pick Denver Grainger-Barras. Liam McMahon, a key position forward formerly of Collingwood but who was a leading goalkicker with Carlton’s VFL team this year is also on board with the Blues. Delisted pair Sam Durdin and Matt Carroll will also be trying to reclaim their places at the club.

Essendon - the Bombers have promised delisted defender Kaine Baldwin the opportunity to train on with a view to SSP selection.

Fremantle - the Dockers have long been expected to sign former Cat and Power midfielder Quinton Narkle.

Gold Coast - the Suns passed up in the rookie draft and can also sign a player through the SSP.

Port Adelaide - the Power will invite North Melbourne VFL skipper Jack Watkins to audition for a SSP spot.

Western Bulldogs - Dom Brew, captain of VFL premier Werribee is expected to be invited, along with SA ruckman Harry Boyd.

West Coast - the Eagles have been linked to cut Suns defender Sandy Brock.

Our first call will be to Jack Henderson if *somehow* a list spot opens up.

Hopefully we find out soon *if* that list spot is going to open up

Yep either *that* way 😂 or an unfortunate injury (which hopefully doesn’t happen).

Some sort of financial agreement is reached for the two years remaining on his contract and then we can open up a list spot to either sign someone in the SSP or we choose to leave the list spot open for mid season.

Liking the Dogs train ons in Brew and Boyd - would have been happy to have both at the Dees had we had another list spot

Posted a couple of times wanting us to get him, after his premiership BOG with the Redlegs. Reckon we might have matched him now, though, with AJ.

No. With the exception of a possible Category B spot for international players or players from other sports (not considered particularly likely), there are no vacancies on the club’s lists.

Looks as though St Kilda’s Brad Crouch is going to announce his retirement just days after being re- rookied by them.

This will open up an SSP for the Saints.

I'm struggling with the maths. According to the Hatch, Match and Dispatch thread these are the Melbourne changes:

IN Tom Campbell (free agent, St Kilda), Aidan Johnson (Werribee), Harvey Langford (Dandenong Stingrays), Xavier Lindsay (Gippsland Power), Ricky Mentha (Category B rookie), Harry Sharp (trade, Brisbane)

OUT Angus Brayshaw (retired), Ben Brown (retired), Kyah Farris-White (delisted), Lachie Hunter (retired), Alex Neal-Bullen (trade, Adelaide), Josh Schache (delisted), Joel Smith (delisted), Adam Tomlinson (delisted)

That's 8 players off the list and 6 on. Am I missing anyone on? If those numbers are correct, why don't we have any vacancies?

Luker Kentfield.  I fell for the same trap myself.

Plus we had two Cat B's in 2024 - we now have only one.

Hoping the Demons take an Irish player as a category B rookie to continue the legacy of Jimmy Stynes. ☘️

The club gave up on that many years ago although it was reported recently that we did look at a couple of Irish lads who were invited to the Draft Combine in October.

Pretty sure they both signed with Geelong and St Kilda respectively

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
