Draft night - How it may work out?

Jagga Smith looks a gun. Very similar to Serong, which is exactly what we need to compliment our slow midfield. I'd be wrapped to get him at 5. Josh Smillie also looks a gun but he is a bull. Would learn heaps off Trac as he is of a similar mould. Either of these two would be fantastic.

I absolutely acknowledge that our forward line has been an issue, including the 'missing' forward piece which we all crave. However, I think we really need to be taking two mids with Picks 5 and 9 this year (assuming we don't look to split etc). 

There's a glut of talent likely available at those picks and we need a big reinvigoration of our midfield, IMO - we saw what life was like this year with no Petracca and a highly limited Oliver. Yes, some will argue that Kozzie, Rivers and McVee can push into those roles, but Pickett is a pinch-hitter at best; Rivers is honest, but he still isn't an 'A' grader (and as a mid, may not ever be one), and McVee is relatively unproven. Windsor is our next Langdon and I can see him being an 'A' grade winger, whilst I'm not yet convinced on Tholstrup.

With the twilight approaching for a number of  listed mature players.  Briefly glimpsing JT’s crystal ball afar, suggests the priority will be draftees that will make an impact in the next couple of seasons.

The pattern has been set with Windsor and Tholstrup, both getting continuity of games in their first season. Both having physiques that provided sufficient resilience, endurance and strength to make an immediate impact off field in the gym, at training and on field at senior level. Plus the potential for positively developing quickly at subsequent pre-seasons early in their careers.

On presence alone candidates at the top end of the draft who have these desirable traits would logically be prioritized by the recruitment team.

If the core of experienced veterans remain healthy. The spark of developing younger players added too by some canny recruitment.  Could  re-ignite some real demon passion and a return to the top tier next year.

Don’t get me wrong Tauru looks a gem but he’s icing on the cake - mids win you flags 

Mids do win you flags. They also give you a season of first use of the ball as they charge forward towards leading forward arrays backed up by small marauders like those we already have, but misplace the smalls too often in last opportunity roles. 

Toby Green, in that regard, won't accept that [censored]. That's what makes him absolutely brilliant.

It’s not our style but if Langford, Lalor and FOS are off the board I’m making that trade right away. 5 or 10 are worth about the same.

Then moving 11 for the Eagles future first and hopefully something (F3) that gets us in the draft in the 40’s if possible.

9, 10, 45 and the eagles future first covering the loss of our future first. That would be good list managment.

I am visiting Palm Cove on sunday for the day and recall the last time i was there was on day two of the Jacko draft. While my wife was shopping, I was outside counting down to our pick at 30 as I recall.

I liked Rivers, as I had posted on DL, solely because of his video highlights and the comments of guys who knew about him. 

As we got to his pick and he was still there, I hoped JT would take him. When I heard his name announced, I yelled out and my wife ran out of a shop and asked if I was ok and I told her we got Rivers and she just stared at me.

I am hoping this is an omen, even though this time I am not there on draft day, that we get great players in the draft this year.

I was watching Brian Lara being interviewed by the late, great Dean Jones in St Kilda that night.  I had the Fox coverage on mute streaming on my phone.  Had to stifle a Riv related cheer whilst Lara was recalling how he retook the test hs record against England.

Young especially is the sliding doors moment for me - I rate him so highly and it looks like he’s finally reaching the potential that he showed back in his draft year

In my mind, we don't win the flag in 2021 without him. Max flagged late in the season 2022 to 2024 but was absolutely flying in 2021. This is not a fluke.

I'd also suggest we win the flag in 2023 with Jackson in red and blue.

Luke gets under rated because he good but not great at both positions.
