West Coast are obviously thinking potentially Bo Allen, Liam Baker and Matt Owies > Pick 3. It's not a ridiculous notion but i wouldn't have done this trade personally.

    It's bold, very bold. Obviously want to get experience into the club and getting pick 12 back doesn't hurt in an even draft.

    Carlton would be laughing though.

    I’d be getting the microwave out if I was a West Coast fan 

    I understand the strategy, but they could have bought in Sheezel, Reid and one of Smith/FOS/Lalor over the past three years and be set with an elite midfield for a decade…

    At 9, hope for either Lindsay, Travaglia or Tauru. Each are also very special youngsters with definite AFL quality futures.  Each would also be ready for AFL in 2025. 
     

    Josh Smillie is an absolute wildcard for me.  I’d be doubtful if he gets past the Saints.  At start of the year, he was a possible number 1.  His form was generally very good and he dominated Coates league footy. But his championships games were average and I think clubs saw his defensive skills as lacking.  But his talent is undeniable.  194cms big and strong and good burst across first 5 metres. Kicks it 50-60 metres easily.  His centre clearance work is Cripps like.  Whoever gets him and then puts the necessary extra physical conditioning into him, could get an absolute steal and a future great.

    Our pick #9 will also be quite dependent upon who the Saints will be possibly looking to take with draft picks #7 and #8.

    Smillie has been the hardest to get a read on for me. Some say he's best as a half-back, others say he's a Cripps like big bodied mid who could go forward. 

    Potential is definitely there though and if he can build a tank he could be anything.

    So out of the midfielers listed, who amongst them has a fierce attack on the ball?  The question is for anyone who might know

    Langford is the standout ball winner. (Smillie was but had a quiet national champs, was he the gifted kid who got distracted or did he peak last year?)

    Lalor hasn’t proven it due to injury and cricket summers but he has the explosive body to do it.

    Draper has good stoppage craft and won the ball pretty well after a slow start at SANFL level. 

    FOS - you’re picking him for his outside game but it’s not like he can’t win it. He’d be more of a Kossie pick than an Oliver style JT pick. But if we liked Kako we probably like FOS.

    Jagga racks the footy up for fun including at VFL level. You can’t question his work rate and reading of the ball at stoppages, but I have doubts on the value of what he does and the way he wins the footy.

    Langford and Lalor are the 2 who scream JT guys

    Yeah I’ll second that. Think Lindsay would be good pick up at 9 to compliment not just Lalor/Langdord but also Windsor and the Kolt.

    I'm a huge fan of Tauru's contested marking. Something we really lack in our talls at present. Could be a great CHF/CHB swingman.

    I've seen a few comments on Lindsay that say he's similar to Billings. 

    I don't see it that way at all. During the Coates League he played majority of his games as an inside midfielder and showed that he was willing to get his hands dirty and win the contested footy.

    Some vision here.

    Not necessarily advocating for this, but...

    There's a lot of angst among WC fans about them dropping to 12, and with Freo having the 2 picks above them it's unlikely they'll get Bo Allen. Would they significantly overpay to get 9, say 12 and a future 1st for 9 and our future 2nd? Maybe something crazy they'll throw up on draft night?

    Lindsay or Travaglia at 9.  

    The options here bring in two high quality youngsters.  

    With Kolt and Windsor from 2023, it’s the “Rebuild on the run”. 
     

    Now we  pray for Jefferson over the summer 🤞🤞🤞🤞… gets some aggro pills and puts in a huge preseason in the gym & on the track.

    I would have put Jefferson on the plane with Trac to do some hard training at Red Bull - I know that’s not how it works but he does need to up his intensity big time

    His football IQ to me is much better than Billings' and seems to do inside and outside very well. I like him a lot.

    Lindsay to me looks like some sort of combination of Josh Kelly and prime Jordan Lewis. i'd be very happy if we bring him in at pick 9. There are so many good players it feels like it'll be hard to stuff the pick up. 

    I wonder if the Giants would be open to splitting that pick 9 into picks 15 and 16 and we could perhaps get Lindsay and Hynes to go with whoever we take at pick 5?

    Wouldn’t be so certain on that, a lot of interest in the last few weeks with Hamish Davis from a range of clubs, I consider him to be a bit of a bolter who may continue on the upward trend given the amount of attention attracted and follow up interviews with him, clubs are having

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

    • PREVIEW: West Coast

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
