You do realise I posted that because I thought people would be interested in an AFL related article on a website that few people are probably aware of.

    this is one of those instances where, for whatever reason, crikey won't allow me to access anything beyond the third para

    it's not a bad website, i find, but i'd rather spend a micro-transaction with them than an annual subscription, which is not something that they offer

    The headline is written by someone who doesn't bet.

    The crux of the article states that the AFL receives truckloads of money from betting agencies, and names people  associated with the game, who have sponsorship deals.

    So what?

    Interesting to see which media personalities "sell their soul"  to get the big bucks from the betting companies.

    Interesting also to see how unsuccessful Jenkins's  tips have been. He's always pontificating about good bets on SEN. I've wondered how often he's been correct.

    Sports betting really is a scourge on our community. It's great that MFC has abandoned Pokies.  The AFL hasn't followed suit.

    I'm a punter - horses and footy.

    I really enjoy betting on footy. But find the ads - and even more so the integration (eg the in game ads and 'tips' from peanuts like brown) - obscene.

    In 20 years time we will look back on such advertising in the way we look back im horror at the total integration of say Benson and Hedges sponsoring cricket (and all the rest, eg motor sport).

    What were they thinking?

    And the parallels are clear:

    Like we did with tobacco in the 1970s, we know the damage gambling does to our society. The research is crystal clear.

    The motivation of the advertisers and companies is also the same- create life long customer loyalty, from teenager to grave.

    And the AFL, like sporting organisations in the 1970s will argue the money is critical - but when push comes to shove will find other revenue streams.

    Their quality is far above Murdoch and the now-risible Domainfax, and that of the Guardian but …. You’re not the product so ya gots to pay. Like Macrobusiness. I throw Michael West some $ now and then. What Rex Patrick is exposing re the gas cartel is a national service and they deserve the $

    Sam McClure's hypocrisy aside, there is a clear conflict of interest concern as to James Brayshaw, Garry Lyon, Luke Hodge and any other broadcast commentators receiving betting sponsorships if live betting is permitted.

    Yes but we don’t normally advertise these vices to children but hey anything for a dollar…….

    You might want to read some of the practices these scum roll out to lure more money out of helpless addicted souls. Gambling is one thing, actively encouraging those on a losing streak to gamble more is leading to family homes being lost,  family violence and suicide. Time to lose the advertising and time to regulate these companies.

    Most people that gamble know exactly the risks and rewards and enter into it like adults. Like everything in life some people take it to the extreme. You can’t completely regulate for those at the edges.

    I’m not trying to patronise here but read some of the accounts of people who lost everything. The way companies contact big losers and load their accounts full of betting money so they can lose it and more because that’s what gambling is. It’s a way of losing your money over time. It needs regulation just like all corporations do. Sheesh, look at the world and tell me that corporations don’t need their wings clipped. At its essence it comes down to curtailing greed, we’d all be better off if that happens, you, me, everyone!

    Gambling sponsorships like tobacco in the last century will be gone within ten years.

    I wonder who will be the mega sponsors of the future

    Watching AFL and NRL I often have no idea who the main jumper sponsors are so I'm obviously not the target market

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions.
