He had 5 possessions and at least 1 of those was kicking out from full back. First job of a footballer is to get the ball.

He was on Naughton, who had been on fire the previous 6 weeks, all game. Should not have been left on him after the third goal.

Exactly. We already wasted a good pick in the Sharp trade (last year and this year)

We traded pick 49 for sharp

This by all measures, is not a good pick

What is the club's obsession with this bloke? We've already got JVR and Jefferson. The bloke has shown nothing

Tim Lamb must have photos. I cannot for the life of me see how he stays if the new CEO is about accountability.

I dare say we made a promise to him last year and giants knew he was going to move him down back

Agree here. Between picks 45 and 55 you have the following likely success rate:

1 game = 55%
50 games = 15%
100 games = 5%

Picks outside of the first 2 rounds are highly overrated. They should be used on players where you can see some mature potential whether trade in or mature age from VFL, WAFL, SANFL etc where you can see their potential attributes and fit more clearly. Worth having a swing when you have picks there but it should be secondary to finding a higher confidence way to put them to use during trade period.

whats the rush we have no coach at the moment

Players are agreeing to clubs right now. We have a list manager for a reason. If the new coach wants to kibosh some deals that we have made then I would prefer to manage that fallout then being quiet and then the new coach coming in and seeing no potential opportunities because they were ‘waiting for them to arrive.’

Do you have stats for other game ranges? The only problem I have with giving up late picks is you miss out on a TMc.

I wonder, should Woey be delisted, if Derksen might take over his jumper number.

WD40 would help make things run a little more smoothly.

He is a swingman so there is always another use!

Yes - and he does not enthuse me at all.

Could almost say that about (insert name here) - and give you a long list of blokes that might go ok at VFL level but aren't up to AFL. Jack Billings.

this post tells me you havent watched him at all.....

I don’t know. Gut feel tells me he’d be too loose

I have. And he will not be adding anything to our team or list. There is a reason he has not played a game at GWS in nearly 4 years

Pick 49 would have been fine on its own but for some reason even though he was uncontracted and had only played 16 games we also swapped this year's third round pick with Brisbane's third round. I know that'll blow out this year but every little bit makes a difference in the draft (e.g hypothetically could be the difference between getting Sam Davidson in last year's draft at pick 51, compared with Aiden Johnson at pick 68)

hes better than most of our spud forwards at casey bar luker

The Tim Lamb special

I know its been noted on here but with gee GWS' depth for talls both forward and back so strong I can see why this guy hasn't had much opportunity.

Key Backs : Taylor, Buckley and Himmelberg. Then the progression of Alir and Idun as versatile talls down back as firmed them up even more.

Key Forwards: Jesse, Cadman, Riccardi, Brown and now Gruzewski added to that depth.

GWS coaches are really set on the structure they have, especially down back. Up forward, even this Gruzewski kid has been banging down the door, kicking bags in VFL and could only get a few games this season.

So there's definitely one big reason there why WD hasn't had a good look at AFL level yet.

A low cost trade to boost our aging Key back stocks and hopefully push our Key Forwards for a more competitive selection pool.

I'll agree with you on one thing - we had spud fowards

Wade Derksen (GWS Giants)

On Melbourne interest

“The trade request hasn’t come through just yet, but 12 months after Melbourne tried to get him out he will get there this year.

“They’ve maintained a serious level of interest in him. Has been dominating at VFL level but very hard to get into that backline at the Giants.”

hard to dominate in his 13 games, none since round 15, due to injury

i don't understand bringing in players who can't make it at afl level simply to add to depth in terms of our positions

if we bring in players from other teams - even if it's for ostensibly a throw-away pick - you want them playing at senior level not merely being fourth or lower down the ranks of options for their position

Another poor player with little ability.

We have a lot of talls with little or no ability depending how you rate them. I don't think Jefferson could make it as an AFL player under Goody and Co. empire. However with a new coach coming in Jeffo might be something !!!!!!! Kentfield would be the main forward going forward for me and in fact could play back with Turner playing forward. Petracca was previously good for kicking goals , due th his unfortunate injury last year that all dried up. Derksen won't cost us much and he can play all both ends which is a bonus. Jeffo cannot play at both ends.

Like others I haven't ever seen him play, so thanks for videos from his pre-GWS days and he does look the goods - but so do many that have junior video highlights.

But a quick look at his numbers in the VFL for the Giants tells me that he is a moneyball pick of the highest order - potentially a pick that will save Tim Lamb's job. How many forwards take 12 marks and have 25 disposals - as he did in a loss to Willy. The week before he was quieter in a 50-point loss but still kicked a couple. The week before it was 17 disposals and two goals in a one-point loss, although he did have a shot at a matchwinner. He was prominent against us the week before - 19 disposals, five marks, three tackles. That's a lot of disposals for a tall.

His height is somewhere between 194cm and 197cm - that's tall and he can play back-up ruck - tick.

He can kick it a long way based on the videos and with both feet - tick.

He is still only 23 - that's way better than drafting/trading in players who are at end of career such as Membrey or Taberner and given that he has been in the system for two years is ready to play AFL - tick.

He can play both down back and up forward, which means if jnjuries happen to our ageing tall defenders, he can be sent there or Petty can.

He is from a club that boasts the best talls - Taylor, Buckley, Cadman and Hogan - tick - which explains why he didn't get an AFL gig.

He has at least one mate at club already - AMW - and apparently has family in Melbourne - tick.

If anyone has any major doubts then let us know - he may not have high tackle numbers but nor do many talls.

So what do we give up for him?

I'd say we'd have to give up our second rounder or the pick we receive from Adelaide for ANB - any deal involving our pick 5 should be immediately shut down.

And given that he looks ready to play, the length of his contract should be three years, just in case he struggles with the extra expectations of playing AFL. I'd imagine he is on somewhere between 200-250K at present, so his deal should come with a new $400-$450K salary.

To me, it's the first good trade news we've had since Ed and Ben.

Nice post.

But it def wont be a 2nd rounder -- talk as recent as 2wks ago was that it could even be a del FA case. Given GWS know were keen that now seems unlikely but I'd say at most it'll be a pick swap of later picks to assist with points for Kalani bid, whereby we trade say pick 45 for picks 52, 60, 65 or some such.

I absolutely LOVE the Derksen acquisition, think he has HUGE upside and is just not conducive to being in same side as Buckley/Taylor/Idun -- Leek a inferior player but offers speed and can play smalls hence why he was preferred, its a mix/composition issue not something that had anything to do with Derksen not being good enough. You just can't have too many of the same player.

Derksen is a reader of the play, has super strong hands, good disposal, spoils at height and has smarts!

Howes and Adams are not guaranteed to make senior level, Jefferson and Kentfield as well. Fullarton, Hore, and Verrell delisted.

We have room on our list for a mature tall. He will cost very little. He is stuck behind a very strong suite of key defenders in Buckley, Taylor and Idun. Can play forward or back. Mature body, big unit, 197cm. Known quantity, had a very good year in the VFL. Very unlikely we draft a player using a 4th rounder that can match him physically.

Absolutely worth a punt. Could be another Sharp, but he is some physical traits that mean who could be more.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
