Good to rest him and get surgeries done asap.

He was giving it his all but his body was clearly falling apart.

Good decision to manage him for the last 2 rounds.

Now try a few young players.

Bring in Brown and AMW.

Maybe Fullarton to take some load off Max

What exactly is the hand injury? I know the finger was dislocated in Feb/March but as someone with no medical training - anyone able to shed some info here?

But I was told on here that he has been lacking effort, and is lazy?

Weird.

Knee and Ribs were incidents from weekends game. This has been confirmed by Selwyn.

The ribs sound like a new injury, but I can categorically tell you that he had a PCL injury heading into last year's finals, and unfortunately it's flared up again a while ago.

He has been carrying that knee for weeks now. It's possible that it got worse on the weekend of course.

I reckon the club doesn't want to have to explain why they've played him thru multiple injuries, so they are saying it's only recent (the knee/rib part, we all know about the hand).

It's very obvious to me that he's been playing for two reasons; he wanted to fill the gaps left by Gus, then Salem and then Trac (because contrary to reports, he is not checked out), and it's good for his mental health.

All clubs ask their players to play through pain.

Until last week we were still in the finals race. I understand that despite everything. Clarry was our number one possession getter. His  demeanour suggests that he is dealing with his mental issues and is in a much better place. The way the club has dealt with all this is quite appropriate.

You may be right but not everything is hunky dory at the club (the handling of the Petracca injuries was at best, clumsy)

Unless you believe we're doing everything right at the club?  Is that the case?

Why didn't we sub Clarrie off on Saturday?  We can't treat him like cannon-fodder

If it was any other player, would be happy about that player playing the game out?

Yes. I think this is the reason.

What are you talking about?

Most of us knew about the hand injury but how bad it was is anyone's guess ...  but most of us had no idea about the Knee PCL or the fractured ribs

I can't blame anyone for questioning Clarrie's form.  But the information with all his ailments was unknown (for most)

I dont know if its still an issue but a couple of months ago at a sportsmans night with Max he said he was travelling to Donald to the groin injury Guru that treats those injuries.  Sounds like a whole lot of problems

Please ask our Coach about the Sub rule.

He is one of the few who totally misunderstands it relating back to last season.

Explains a lot re his form

You have to wonder why he has been playing at all ... one ailment maybe, but all 3?

That plus Bug last week!! SUPERHUMAN EFFORT FROM THE MAN!!

His rib issue wouldn't have been helped by all the gut punches he kept getting from Port players last Saturday.

Or were as a direct result. Another great job by the scumbag MRO who didn’t even bother to sight the incident. Was the offender even fined?

An example of that was when we left Clarrie on the ground after he hurt his hamstring last season (?)

And it was a decent tear as he ended up missing 3 months (of course, there were other, well documented issues)

So why do you leave a player out on the ground who is in obvious discomfort?

And please don't rehash the Grundy/Schache stuff as that is a completely different issue

Poor Clayton (Clarry) Oliver, now that the run to the finals have ended I am so happy that Clarry is being rested for his surgery with plenty of time to prepare for our tilt at the finals in ‘25. I could see that Clayton was really struggling on Saturday night but was unaware of his PCL and ribs. He is one tough young man, I hope that you have a full recovery Clayton and look forward to hearing positive stories about  your health and preparation for ‘25 and beyond.💕❤️💙

I love Clarry nearly as much as Pickett Fence & have been really saddened by his performance in the last few weeks, now we know why

Why in Gods name have we been playing him with 3 injuries???

Excellent question

So they make him play out the game with cracked Ribs, a knee PCL and a busted hand

And if I can add this at the end...... PARK ME!

You love Pickett Fence??😵‍💫😱

I know he put out some entertaining training reports, but it’s probably a good idea to draw the line somewhere!

The wash up of this season will no doubt show even more players carrying injuries. Glad Clarry can get the medical help he needs and be right for a good preseason.

Speaks volumes of Claz to be playing as well as he has this season without a preseason and carrying major injuries. Best of luck with a speedy recovery!

It's not a binary argument.

Clarry has had a disappointing season.  Part bad luck and part bad preparation.

Bad luck you can't do much about.  He deserves criticism for the latter.  He is paid a lot of money to be a pro, and his actions have contributed to a failed season.

I would expect that the club, his team-mates and hopefully Clarry himself are unhappy with his behaviour.

I still believe that we can have another crack at a flag with the current group of stalwarts and emerging group of young stars,  We will need everything to go right, a professional approach will be a good start.

You are not understanding the totality of Clarries  issues from the start.
I thought most fans understood his mental physical and fitness challenges when it all came out during his return in pre season.

You have just called Clarry unprofessional when he made every effort by himself to prepare for the year. He was not under Club control but training with other support and doing vast amounts of running. Plenty of film/photos were featured during this time.
Eventually he came back and started his Club pre season but was clearly underdone although we hoped he would get better game by game.

Yes he has/ had done some unprofessional things but not his attempt to become fit for the season. That is totally not fair and he should be lauded for the effort/s he has tried this season.

Also the other injuries that have surfaced have impounded the pressure on his fitness  levels.
I think some / many/ few were surprised when he was selected from Round 1 vs Sydney. Not sure that was the wisest move for the long term season plan really.

Lets just learn from it all that Clarry is in a much greater space now and give home time now to concentrate on ridding himself of those injuries and when able commence a Clubprogram pre season during the off season. And that we will see the real Clarry again in the top echelon next season in the mid field.

Yeah, we've been playing banged up but when you have that mantra and you don't win, the cracks can appear

From a player welfare point of view.  But most of us are in the dark as we don't know the full story

In 2021 we had hardly any injuries and the mantra then (via Burgess) was being able to play through pain

Maybe 3 years later it's all become too much and the players are worn out

Viney seems injured to me and Max will probably get a leg amputation knowing him.

The most important thing we can do heading into 2025 is nail the off-season and pre-season in terms of fitness  and injury management.

Not sure what part of my post you disagreed with but you contradicted yourself.

Basically I typed the same things.  Get back on the horse, go again and be part once again of one of the premier midfields in the game and the best in my lifetime.

Good.
Anyone who was continuously attacking his performances recently should take note that he was playing in absolute agony. His hand was never properly operated on, it was only a quick fix. His knee has been an issue since finals last year too.
All the keyboard heroes calling him lazy and a liability, should remember that next time they attack a player before they know what is truly going on.

A mighty effort from Clarry to overcome a horrible personal time, on top of a mountain of injuries, to play all but 3 games!

Here, here. I have posted similar on another thread. What a champion of the game. Last time I looked he was still our highest disposal gatherer for the season. Many players would have put the cue in the rack. Outstandingly brave effort. 4 time best and fairest and in the conversation for our greatest ever. Yet still there are those on here that delight in getting stuck into him. I'm not a 'happy clapper' when it comes to players but when it come to the great Clayton Oliver I have nothing but the upmost admiration. Even more so given his pre season turmoil. If you don't you're not a true Demon.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
