I do not have any problem with the Roffey interview.

She is President of the club and there are more than a few levels of management between her and the players that would come into play in the situation that Petracca found himself in after his injury. This is also true of the present situation with whatever is going on between the club and the player.

There is the football department with the coaching staff, welfare staff and a whole lot of other people that would be the first line of contact when there are problems that need to be resolved and then there is the head of the football department and then a CEO, in this case Pert, that would be in line to be informed and step in to assist with resolution.

To my mind, the President would be kept informed of the evolving situation but not have any hands on detailed role in resolving the situation.

Once this whole thing plays out, I would, in Kate's position look for a detailed review of the handling of the whole thing from the time of the injury to the outcome what ever it is. I do not see this a an open public enquiry but rather a normal inhouse review of a extraordinary  situation to ensure that the lessons are learnt.

All that was said in this interview supports my thinking that both sides are being very careful about what first hand information is out in the public space so as to not burn bridges. That makes me think that the situation, at the moment is looked at by both sides as retrievable. That, over time can change.

We all have to keep in mind that in the absence of first hand cold hard facts the football media will run with sensational storylines using imagination and projection and, dare I say it, random thoughts to build momentum into something that takes on a life of it's own.

I would prescribe a Bex and a good lie down for a number of people posting on this. It is a long way from being resolved and you need to pace yourself.

You’re kidding me it was a train wreck! She knew what the questions would be & acted as if she and the board are seperate …wow player is icu and you don’t ring him/parents that’s relationship 101 .. needs to go along with many others… I hear Pert works from Noosa ???

Really ?? How many club presidents could you name if put on the spot? In the last few months Wright  has left Collingwood after taking a sabbatical directly after the GF..one reason..Kelly.. there has been serious racial allegations against Kelly ..where has that disappeared too. Noble has asked for a trade (not expected by the Pies & a couple of their depth/young players are exploring their options. Now admittedly it’s not a Trac but we have 1 disgruntled player who unfortunately is a superstar & all of a sudden we’re a basket case. Oliver was last year & preseason ..have nothing but respect for how he’s handled  himself this season.  Maybe read the latest “bombshell “ where allegedly some Melb players were discussing Trac & called him weird and wondered how another club would deal with his “weirdness “. Get your next post ready to heap blame on the club again ..

Who else do you blame Kate when these Cluster $%&#s continue to occur

And 2025 hasn't even started

Circulatory shock can be fatal.

"can be fatal" to "I nearly died" is quite the jump. Though once again, the surgeon never said he nearly died.

Can’t say weird now, isn’t it “neurodiverse”?

Plenty of neurotypical people who are as weird as [censored] and plenty of neurodiverse people who are Mr/Mrs average.

Yes (reading between the lines) his main point was that what was being touted around in the press was not an accurate account of things based on his catch up with Tracc (as mates).

I suspect that the stuff around big crowds / trac brand …. Is what he will come out deny because it makes him look like a complete fool. However I expect he’ll stand firm behind medical treatment / standards etc.

No, I am not kidding you.

Do we know what the situation was when Petracca was in ICU and who from the club was in touch with his family? I do not believe it was necessary for the club President to make the call.

Since their early years with us I thought Gus, Clarrie and Trac would be the heart and soul of the club going forward. (Apologies Max and Vin)

Appears I was at least partially wrong. Now can’t help but feel if we can get realistic trade value that may be the best way forward re Trac. Can’t see it happening though.

We need to de-escalate the rhetoric and not give Trac a reason to respond.

Isn't that what Roffey tried to do in the interview?

At the end of the day, only demanding to be traded to "2 big Melbourne clubs", is going to look really bad. Hopefully that's not what he's saying.

Also, can we stop debating whether or not he nearly died? Does it matter? He clearly went through a traumatic experience. I don't like what is being leaked to the press but I also don't think it's fair to debate his medical experience, which none of us were there for.

I bet you Jimmy Stynes would have , Eddie mcquire, I’m sorry club is in a mess and she is our president who sounded so disconnected or not across the detail ..

Well clearly Kate doesn't know, which is the issue. If she said "Gary and Simon both rang him daily" then great.

Yes but she exposed herself as not being on top of the issue and caring enough for the player.

I don't think Roffey did any harm with the club/Petracca relationship but she put more pressure on herself (and the club by extension).

I respect that that is your interpretation of the reported events but that does not make it a reality.

I'm sorry... O do not understand. Kate doesn't know what?

Kate answered the question regarding her contact with Petracca and his family. I do not believe she need to know of every contact that was made.

Maybe that was her plan…

If so, took a page out of Jose Mourinho’s book

She said she hasn't spoken to Petracca's parents in a while.

She said she hasn't spoken directly to Petracca about whether he has a preference to be elsewhere.

That may or may not be factual. But those are the facts of what she said.

What she didn't say is whether she had spoken to Petracca's parents while he was in the ICU (which would be a private conversation anyway and not something to discuss with the media).

She also didn't say whether she had spoken directly to Petracca as to other issues (but she was well aware of them and the club as a whole was working to resolve them).

She also noted that she had at least reached out to Petracca and said that he was welcome to discuss any of his concerns with her anytime he wanted.

luci, i'm not sure "he almost died on the operating table" is really accurate.

this is a major operation where there is always a possibility of death

it is also true that without an operation he would bleed out and die

we would need to know the the exact words used and the context

i've had 2 major operations where i could have theoretically died but i never "almost died on the operating table" despite the possibility.

"operating table" is where an operation is undertaken.  To my (somewhat informed) knowledge he did NOT have an operation (other than his appendix, later) but had an angiogram and embolisation of his bleeding spleen which Is performed, in consultation with his surgeon, by a radiologist.    This is a fairly major procedure, but it is not an operation in the sense that the abdomen is not opened or violated in any way.

Reminds me of the 1965 what would now be a meme that was made after RDB's departure.   "Ron Barassi has a job at a brewery - makes Melbourne Bitter and Carlton United".

Gawn says no repairing needed if Trac decides to rock up day one of pre season.

For  those that can’t read the article. Nothing new, both players have frustrations some Gawn agrees with other that he doesn’t.

Trac hasn’t said anything to him about leaving, which is probably why they are so confused as what they hear in the media doesn’t reconcile with what he is telling them.

Good one.  I remember 1965 when I was 14. RDB broke our hearts and defected to Carlton. A newspaper said he had made Melbourne Bitter and Carlton United.

"I remember giving the surgeon my friend’s number. I think it was after the surgery so this must have been 3am in the morning. I didn’t know at the time as I was drugged up, but my friend came into the ICU the next morning and basically said that the surgeon said I might not make it basically, that I was in critical condition, because of the internal bleeding and everything."

Wait. He said that a friend visited him in ICU the next morning, when he couldn't have visitors for days after the surgery? That doesn't really add up.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
