I really can't see Goodwin being let go, football is a business and to drop a years salary - don't know his salary amount but what is it worth in memberships? Coaching transitions come with significant financial costs, termination payouts, hiring expenses, and potentially higher salary demands from a new candidate. Its a very expensive exercise. For a club hemorrhaging from a few years of poor form - is it economically rational to sack Goodwin??? From a board perspective.

If we are keeping a coach we know should be sacked solely because it will cost us payout dollars we may as well pack it in. The amount lost through memberships, attendances, merchandise etc will be worse than the payout figure. Perhaps the club will think about the ramifications of handing out bad contracts next time.

Not it will cost us.

It ALREADY has cost us.

We're throwing good money after bad chasing a good win

The epitome of stupidity.

Who are the assistants emerging as potential top calibre coaches? Feel like I always used to understand who the ‘next bunch’ was… I don’t nowadays

I’m not really across it either but have heard good things about Hayden Skipworth

Was looked over for the West Coast job but seems to be a highly rated assistant at Collingwood

Ash Hansen another whose name gets thrown around a bit

Reckon it’s this type of coach we need to go after - someone whose been biding their time learning from the best teams and has their own vision of what they want to implement

Brett Montgomery from the Giants.

The boys on the pod are spot on our biggest issue are skills we butcher the ball. To be in contention you need to take the game on and have the skills to match the risk. So much of our dare and risk is undone by poor skills. That why we need guys like Fritta great skills. Identify the ball butchers there the one we need to offload.

There are a bunch of us not on the pod who have only been saying this for the last 3-4 years...

My personal thoughts are we need to get rid of Alan Richardson before we get rid of Goodwin. Richo has been responsible for assembling our sub-par assistant coaching ranks and I feind it incredible that it's not talked about more than he moved our premiership winning defensive coach, where defence was our strong points, to being our forward coach despite never playing forward during his career.

I think Goody gets his next year but there needs to be contingency plans in place and honestly I don't see any existing currently. Changing Goody for the sake of it just feels like the old Melbourne. I'm not giving him a pass and I really can't see him being the one to turn it around, but if we sack him without a genuine plan it'll be like jumping out of a plane and trying to invent a parachute while you fall.

Even better get rid of both.

Despite the flag he has overseen one of the most dramatic falls from grace I’ve ever seen a club experience. From a flag team to a perennial wooden spooner

He feels like Simon 2.0 so I would say no to Simpson.

He's an excellent footy manager. Him and Greg Swann have turned Brisbane into a powerhouse.

Matthew Boyd and Hayden Skipworth I'd definitely go after as assistant coaches in waiting. Collingwood are easily the best trained side (Fly is just a people manager) so you'd assume those guys have a big say in their program.

All premierships are worth the same. The ground is irrelevant. Richmond supporters don't devalue their last premiership because it wasn't at the MCG. Only some Melbourne supporters do.

I am not putting our flag down. I just mean that for us to truly break the curse, must be at the G.

I think this is the absolute least of changes that we need to make. If Goodwin is contracted to next year and we don't relieve him of his duties before hand then there needs to be other changes made in the football department. I did read someone remarking on the selection of Richo being a good friend of Pert. And someone else talking about how good our development was with McCartney. I do wonder if our recent downturn in performance stems from picking Pert over Jackson's preferred candidate of Mahoney. A bit revisionist I know but that's where I'm at.

In any case, I find it hard to believe that there's anyone in the football department and or selection committee that is challenging Goodwin (or anyone) on team selections. It seems to me that they are no longer rewarding sustained good form at Casey or poor form in the seniors. This is not an outlier and has been the case for a considerable time.

I don't dislike Goodwin, but I dislike what he represents for our club. He has managed the ultimate goal and a time of sustained success (albeit wanting from finals success) but all we seem to get is the same rhetoric to explain the same poor performances. We are lacking dynamics.

Goodwin is the face of the football department (and no doubt the most compensated), so in that regard I understand why he gets the most attention for our poor performances. Maybe he turns it around (and maybe the cow jumps over the moon) but I can't fathom it being with the same football department that has lead us to where are today.

Its S.G way or the highway is my opinion! Got to go!

With an Interim president and a CEO to commence later there will be no move on Goddy.

There would have to be an obvious disconnect between the coaches and players for a move to be considered - no evidence of this. Will not happen.

Goodwin will be at the club next year I believe that’s a given. So even if you aren’t happy about that fact sorry, but I think you better get used to it.

Reason I say this is the way the Soft Cap works in relation to Senior and assistant coaches. For 2025 the soft cap was set at 7.625 million. A club either spends it or loses it you can only carry forward a $100,000 into the following year.  Regardless of what you are paying senior and assistant coaches only 20% of their salaries are excluded from the soft cap.

So let’s assume Goodwin is on 1.2 million as a number probably something like that I would think after winning the flag. So sack him now pay out his contract and one million comes out of your 2026 soft cap. Doesn’t leave much to pay you new coach and unlike players you can’t back end the contract.

I suppose you could ask other members of the football department to take a pay cut, oops they have contracts, or sack a few and pay out more contracts.

Sorry guys but pretty sure he will be there till at least this time 2026. Unless of course he resigns.

That’s poor mgt by the club! Why was he extended in 22 deservedly so but again in 23, no need for it, should have been moved on in 24 & a clean out of footy dept with all the mismaned culture issues

Can't wait for next season if u r right 🤮

It will cost a fraction of the 1.2-mil figure to sack him in the back end of next season. If we're not showing significant improvement by this time next year I cannot see him seeing the season out.

Demonland will melt down if we extend him in the coming months - imagine the shame his agent would feel initiating that conversation.

Cats leading North by 100 points with a coach in his 15th season, we lost to north by 59 points, if this isn’t proof of how far Goodwin is of the pace, our list management is very poor when you consider the cats haven’t bottomed out, fed up watching the cats stay relevant vs 5 mins of sunshine

Our loss to North was bad, but it was also four months ago now.

We beat them two months ago.

The relevance of tonight's game is zero.

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
