6 Langdon - busted his gut all night.

5 Gawn - solid all-round performance.

4 Rivers - our only classy midfielder.

3 Fritsch - accurate goalkicking but still lazy.

2 McDonald - mix of good and bad.

1 McVee - seldom rattled under constant pressure.

Just back and watched Gawny go pretty much one out against the Doggies and only lose by 51.

6. Captain Max. Outstanding game, massive hit out to advantage numbers, 9 marks, 12 contested, a goal and did it everywhere.  Schooled last years AA ruck.

5. Langdon put in something resembling an acceptable effort and never stopped running.

4. Rivers had pretty good numbers but was largely irrelevant as the dogs mids did as they pleased. Still, at least he tried.

3. Sparrow appeared a bit interested until the last quarter but was still substantially better than most.

2. McVee was unobtrusive but didn't make many mistakes.

1. Fritsch kicked a couple, took a nice mark.

As for pretty much everyone else, hope you enjoyed watching the game.

The Dogs are a genuinely good team.  Well done to them on the way they have recovered their season.

They did but I would sooner have the flag.

Sadly, none of our boys were in the top half dozen on the ground, but they deserve some recognition on here.
My take on the better Dees:
6.   Rivers  -  did nothing to harm the plaudits he’s earning as a future high quality mid in the competition.  Needed more support.
5.   Gawn  -  on one leg, but attitude and leadership under duress were testament to what we’ve come to expect from Max.
4.   Langdon  -  busted a gut, and ran up and down the wing providing options all night.  We needed more like him.
3.   McVee   -  again showed plenty of composure and touches of class under pressure.
2.   JVR  -  showed enough to confirm why he’s widely regarded as a future star KPF and back-up ruck.
1.   Sparrow. -  solid return to the ‘big time’.  Dulled the influence the Bont in the second half.

6 Gawn - I was a bit worried that his calf injury would render him insipid and when he didn't even jump for the first ball-up my fears seemed reality. But to Maxy's credit he lifted and got on top of English in the centre bounces and he also moved fairly swiftly around the ground and took a beauty and goaled in the second term. Definitely in the best six on ground and definitely still in mix for AA.

5 Bowey - Like many here, I've been really disappointed with Bowzer after a super pre-season. This was the first game that he actually provided run and his confident play up middle in third was our best passage for night. Gees I hope we try him in the middle one day.

4 Rivers - He's still not delivering with his disposal but he really looks the part as a tall midfielder.

3 Langdon - the running man has had a great few weeks since being allowed to go back to his favoured wing.

2 Van Rooyen - I think it was the second term when May realised JVR was way out on the opposite wing by himself against a smaller opponent and it was just so good to see our man just be so strong in the contest. He's really come a long way this season and is one reason why we don't have to keep looking for the full-forward any more.

1 Sparrow - After being dropped last week he came back and really applied himself with more confidence. Was sent to Bont in the second and worked hard on him but the Bont is the Bont.

Harsh on Rivers and McVee.  Definitely showed up and had good games.  Agree and rated others as 2/10 and 3/10.  Lots of passengers

I believe that means Max can't be passed now. Unless we somehow have a deep September run. Congratulations to him.  Another wonderful season from the legend!

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
