Sucking out whatever dole or pension money they have and indoctrinating them into their cult getting them to show up when any sane person wouldn’t bother because football is the sun to which their life revolves around. Our supporters are too intelligent and too interesting to expose themselves to a cold, wet night where the umpiring was mediocre at best and the league is being run by a bunch of George Orwell post truth, there are no rules we are the rules sit down and do what you’re told types. The afl doesn’t respect its supporters so why should we respect them. There’s many things that are far more enjoyable than sitting at the mcg in the cold and wet. Not sure if you’re serious (?) I hope you’re not, but if you are: Why is it that people can’t attend most or all matches and at the same time lead a ‘complete and full life’? I’m so over this notion that one can’t do both. It IS possible. Your comment about clubs ‘praying [sic] on the poor…’ by ‘sucking out whatever dole or pension money they have…’ is profoundly supercilious and reeks of condescension. But the peak of your hauteur is this: ‘Our supporters are too intelligent and too interesting to expose themselves to a cold, wet night…’ Really, REALLY??? If you were being facetious, disregard the above but maybe consider making the tone of your posts clear thereby avoiding gravely insulting someone (friendly advice). Quote

How many would've turned up if we were 18th with two wins for the season? We had <10k against GWS at Docklands about 10 years back. It is possible we just hate games against GWS, and also games at Docklands, and games in the final round of yet another miserable season after seven previous miserable seasons. Because, after all, that was the only game that season where we dropped below 22k in Victoria. One might even note that in 2014, one of the most miserable year for any given club this century and following on from the undisputed most depressing season since Fitrzoy folded, we managed 17k against the Giants late in the season. So the entire difference between Melbourne's 250,000 estimated supporters in the depths of the worst slump in the modern era, and Richmond with 500,000 supporters in their very first non-competitive season in 13 years... is two thousand. In fact, if you looked back over the figures you'd find, comprehensively, that our crowd attendances are the least affected by performance of any club. Each of us can have a whole lot of reasons to not show up for a particular game, but 'soft' has never, ever been one of them. We've got to send that McGuire-led myth to its grave. 1 Quote

I feel sorry for all those that rocked up in the cold to see that half the players didn't. It was another half hearted effort at times. We are so inconsistent. Not just week to week but it's now quarter to quarter. Our fwd line was horrible last night. IMHO this is by far and away the worst excuse/reason. Only making the effort to attend if you’re confident of a win or off the back of a string of wins. Now that’s a fair-weather fan, right there. And you needn’t feel sorry for all who rocked up last night, I can’t speak for everyone else but I’m certainly not ruing having gone, same as last week in Perth and indeed the same with every loss. Little Goffy 14,954 Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 On the topic of soft; https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/tg-collingwood-magpies?year=2016 A 9 win season with a percentage of 95, and the Pies got 17k against the Suns in round 22, 20k against the Eagles in round 14. Out of close to 900,000 supporters. There's your soft. 2 Quote

praha 11,267 Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 Nights game at the MCG from June until finals should be reserved for clashes between Victorian teams. Crowd numbers always dip at the MCG as we get deeper into winter. This impacts all teams. If that game was at 1pm on Saturday it would have been 25k+. We seem to be the only team drawing international teams to the MCG at night in July. GWS had like 10 supporters there. 3 Quote

hardtack 11,106 Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 (edited) Firstly, I’m a paid up member living in Sydney who is financially bereft and therefore can’t afford the fare to Melbourne and necessary accommodation. Secondly, as a result of six months worth of chemotherapy, I have rather severe peripheral neuropathy that has somewhat affected my mobility. It would have been nice to see more punters there, as I believe that’s the kind of thing that can get us over the line in those close games, but like me, I’m sure there are many who have their valid reasons for not attending; particularly given the predicted weather conditions, the lack of parking, and, I’m led to believe, the interrupted train services. Kev 10,920 Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 (edited) Heard some pre-game statistics of us making the four, about 3%, making the eight, 30 %. A loss, zero chance of making the four. Many aren't investing in the season after such a dominant few years. The exit out of finals in straight sets when we were strong doesn't instill confidence in us fighting. We have now returned to the many decades of us relying on other teams results just to get in the finals series. Post traumatic shock of us being easy beats and of course the ski season having a shorter period (if there is snow you better go), is my guess for the poor showing. Personal reason is, I am out of the country. I don't mind the fair weatherers jumping, as I enjoy the open spaces in the good viewing areas, and as I am vocal, I won't get the ire of the opposition's supporters. Though GWS fans have never retaliated to my incessant and inane voice. Go Dees Edited July 28, 2024 by kev martin 4 Quote

There are some on here that will criticise others for being too negative, being a “fair weather” supporter or even just expressing their opinion. Often it comes with an undertone suggesting “you’re not as loyal or as passionate as me”. As you have implied, anybody who regularly expresses their thoughts/ opinions , even if they are critical, must surely be passionate Demon supporters. Otherwise why would anybody waste their time? 3 1 Quote

The keyboard warriors love those moments, and the attention they get. Doesn't mean they stay doing the same thing. Many move on, experiences in this world are vast and varied, as we find other entertaining/passionate ways. It's a big wide world, don't get stuck in the safety of home and in the same job for the 50 years. Take a risk, as certainty and stability is overrated and unattainable. The fair weatherers come back when we win (not a good trait). Most just come and go as their life moves forward. Because they move on, doesn't mean they are not, haven't been or won't be again, passionate about the MFC. Edited July 28, 2024 by kev martin 2 2 Quote

Neil Crompton 5,849 Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 (edited) @Abyssal If, by some chance, you are referring to WCW with your non-too cryptic remark, I’m sure that, if she possibly wanted too, she could well claim the crown as the most loyal supporter we have. But she’d never do that because I think you and some other DL’s totally misunderstand where,I believe, she is coming from. It’s obvious that she loves the club and the players so much that she cannot abide anyone disparaging their name. They are truely like sons (and daughters to her) and as such won’t hear a bad word said against them. Imagine if your son received some of the same vitriol that our players are often subjected to on this site. I think you would react to that - I know I would. Perhaps, for her own good, (and not yours) WCW should be banned from the match day thread once the game has begun, and the post match thread for at least a day after a completed match (unless of course if we win). WCW might be deranged (my affectionate term for her), but do realise it’s her sons and daughters playing out there - so beware. If you have the right to spew vitriolic comments about one of our players, then she has the right to be critical of your comments. We are all different, just understand and accept that. Despite her “derangedness”, she can light up DL, and for me, and I’m sure many others, she makes this site a whole lot better than it would be without her.
