I reckon we all need to take a chill pill.

The media will keep pushing this story until trade period closes. They need to generate content and the Clarry story is manna from heaven for them.

I reckon we’ll trade if we can get his full salary off the books and a future first. I very much doubt Geelong will stump up so Clarry will stay a demon. I could be wrong of course just my opinion.

He won’t be the first player that wanted to be traded but had to stay put. We’ll integrate back into the group and get on with it. Do our best with him and hope we can manage his behavioural problems. If he produces another season of mediocrity next year, then we’ll just have to cut our losses at that point and move on.

Mate his behaviour off field has escalated massively. Can't powder coat it anymore.

He will never be the same and if Geelong a stupid enough, then let him go for SDK

So you say SthSea22, where and when did you witness Clayton’s deteriorating behaviour, what did he do, what are MFC powder coating. What did you see and hear from Clayton?? Or are you an exaggerator wanting to impose your thoughts onto the Best Mid Fielder that I have ever seen in the Red & Blue. Character assassination comes easy to some without the necessity of proof or substantive evidence.

Personally I wouldn’t ever Trade with Geeelong again and if GWS  don’t treat us with respect and fairness I would let them know that we won’t be so easy to work with in the future.

definitely not his call, whether one thinks he's right or not

on top of this, this report is on the afl official web site and barrett is employed and writing for the afl

so what is the afl's responsibility in this? if i was the club i would be making a strong complaint to the afl

We didn't even complain when one of our players was knocked into oblivion and forced to retire and you think we're gonna complain because a journo wrote something mean about us on the AFL website?

Yes. They need to stop behaving like [censored] holes.
Everyone has an obligation to hold people to account for their [censored]-wittery.

I don’t care if they are trying to get some sort of Dodoro perpetual trophy for the most [censored] behaviour - make it an absolute nightmare for all managers to deal with them.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they routinely drove on the wrong side of the road.

No one said it is. It's his opinion. And it happens to be correct.

Not an opinion at all... It's a recommendation! A demand! An opinion would go like this... "I think Pert has taken a stand that would raise questions about his ability to handle the current media onslaught regarding his management style"

"Whatever the outcome, this club cannot continue with Gary Pert as CEO."

That's opinion.

Hearing from an excellent source that Clarry has requested a trade from Geelong to Melbourne

You must have information that you haven't shared! Nothing that we know (emphasis on 'we know' because hearsay does not register on my scale of 'worth') causes me to scream for Pert's hanging. Are you sure you haven't simply been swept along by the lynch mob?

Where it gets blurry is when it’s published on the official AFL website. By publishing that content and supporting it there is a tacit imputation that the AFL condones or even shares the opinion. That’s not something a governing body should be doing and should Pert end up suing for unfair dismissal, industrial relations issues or defamation I wouldn’t be wanting to defend it legally.

Sorry, has the discussion moved on from whining about Barrett now?

There's plenty of reasons that Pert needs to go, main one is the poor culture he has presided over that has seen two of our top stars want to leave the club and the utter mismanagement of those two situations by the club. That's just for starters, you can also add in the rampant leaking of info to the media to try and sway supporters to the clubs narrative which has caused further divisions within the club. He hasn't hit any home runs anywhere else either, not great with sponsors, membership and crowds significantly down, no movement on a home base. He's emblematic of the basketcase the club is perceived as at the moment.

I played for Manang! Ah, how I miss the sandscrapes too.

Clayton Oliver and Marty Hore are half-heartedly kicking a deflated football around the dusty streets of Gunbower.

Marty: Hey Clarry, it's been great visiting one of your many home towns, thanks again for the invo, but maybe we should head into to city for a decent bite to eat?

Clarry: Nah, I don't want to go back to Melbourne. The local does a steak sammy with the lot and eggs from Trac's good friends at the @theaustralianeggcouncil.

The pair are suddenly distracted by some strange heavy breathing from a nearby bush.

Pert's not going to sue the AFL website FFS. Ours supporters have all gone full nuffie. AFL Media is run independently of the AFL, Barrett would be no worse than any other favoured reporters like Wilson, Baum or Whately who get fed lines from the AFL. The AFL website also reports on issues to do with the AFL executive and commission, they've been writing opinion about clubs for years too. The victim mentality on here is nauseating.

You need to listen to the podcast.  In it he talks about what he's looking forward to in 2025, ie running around with his Melbourne teammates, he talks about what he loves about the Melbourne culture, etc.  You should listen to it.

Was that before or after Pert started ringing around other clubs to see what they might offer for him?

In what context did he shop him around, was it with the football department permission or was it himself?

Dr Gonzo always says it. I think he is in the same group as Hawk the Demon and Dr Don Duffy - the Lawrence group.

Haha you have no idea 🤦

Anyone critical of the club must be part of some conspiracy to destabilise it hey? Couldn't be that the people running the club have done a poor job and the supporters are fed up with their mismanagement? We have two supposedly independent reviews going on because things are going just swimmingly at the Dees 🙄

i don't think you are comprehending what i am saying

it has nothing to do with journos writing mean things - that's par for the course and a different issue

it's about an afl paid journo on an official afl site calling personally and directly for a club executive to be sacked. that sort of interference in club governance needs clarification/action from the afl ... it's simply beyond the pale

[this of course is a matter of principle and nothing to do with my opinion of pert's performance]

It's done through the AFL website which is run by AFL media. I think you'll find there's no issues (legally) with the way the AFL website opines on club matters.

This is true, and it's important to note that Damien Barrett is critical of the AFL on a regular basis.

What irks me is that after we say we're not trading him, and Geelong say "we respect Melbourne's position", talks between him, his manager, and Geelong have clearly still continued.

Is this all just preparation for next years trade period? Make his position at the club untenable so that they can come in with low ball offers? It also serves a secondary purpose where it potentially makes him less likely to provide us with his absolute best, or at the very least puts his head in a different space.

I swear they have done this with lots of other players as well, they've become the Barcelona of the AFL where they swoop in and take the best the league has to offer.

It's clearly continuing because Oliver wants it too. If he wasn't set on leaving us/going to Geelong then it would be a non-story.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
