I really hope that one of their annual rule changes this off season, in fact their only one,  is to make it very clear that every punch to the guts, to or from whomever,  is an offence that starts at one week for a first offence.  Yes, for every player and every team.

I guess nothing will happen until a Collingwood or Carlton player gets his spleen ruptured - yes, it can and does happen sometimes from an unexpected and undefended gut punch.

It is cowardly and designed to gain an unfair advantage even if for only a moment.  The "Legendary" Brett Harvey specialised in it, then squealed when he received retaliation, sometimes leading to a report and suspension.  Clarry is the receiver more often than most as it puts him at least momentarily out of the contest.   Bernie Vince once went down and actually vomited and had to leave the field (can't remember the offender off hand but I am sure someone here will remember).    

Yet these inane commentators call it "a love tap".  What a pack of Neanderthals.

They are consistent with us!  It feels like it is becoming a bit "them and us" situation.

Now bring up the fact; that because of Maynard’s staging, the MRO has sanctioned a player and that player fooled the umpire into awarding a free kick.

Interesting to note that the AFL media shut down the staging story completely and not one of the weekend or Monday shows mentioned it.

One guy, for a lesser stage of just putting his hand to his head, gets humiliated, vilified and called a cheat over and over again on every media outlet and the other guy, once again, just walks away and gets on with his life.

IMO Pendlebury’s on Neale was worth a week, Neale was looking at the ball up and wasn’t expecting contact when St Pendles whacked him in the guts - cheap shot, 1 week.

Maynard goes to Long and punches him in the arm, Long open hands him in the chest - don’t think that’s a week with or without the acting. They’re both front on and Maynard should’ve expected to get one back as he gave one first.

I read the appeal was unsuccessful and Gold Coast have started a GoFundMe page to help Long pay off the $3,750 fine.

Redleg I reckon it's relevant that Maynard played for a free kick during off the ball push and shove while May was tackled fairly and played for a free kick.  I've got no problem with the May staging fine, noting that the umpire should have called for a ball up as soon as it became clear May's arms were pinned, and reckon it would open up a can of worms if the AFL started to issue fines for staging during off the ball pushing and shoving.

I liken the AFL trying to sanction a player for staging during an off the ball scrap to a parent punishing only one of their kids when they are both niggling each other.

Reminds me of the time my brother and I and our neighbor were kicking footy on the fringes of  Selwyn Park one winter's evening. It was Thursday, payday in those days. My father and my mother did the weekly shopping, caught the train back to Albion,  and slowly trudged home from the station, laden with groceries. Monbon, thanks for sharing. This approach might work as a penalty for players scrapping off the ball but not sure it would get past the AFLPA, not unless the AFL does something radical such as increasing the % of gambling revenue that goes into the next TPP agreement.
