We need to pick pick a couple like this IMO, this year has shown that our "next in" guys aren't as good as what we had in Harmes, Dunstan and Jordon.

Another to look at it Davies from GC.

As long as the trades don't cost much and we are paying them what they are worth then we need to grab one or two of these guys.

Some more midfield depth would be nice, but I'd much rather we target another star for our midfield. They don't have to be a superstar, but someone that can give us output that means we're not losing anything when Clarry, Viney or Trac aren't in the stoppages.

Or simply someone that provides us with a point of difference in there like a Callaghan. 

Even when we added Langdon for a second rounder, he was probably in the top 10 wingers at the time, but there were questions over his disposal. 

When he came to us, he completely transformed our outside game and strengthened our midfield bulls as a result.

Add another piece like that and keep the list healthy, and I think we're not far away.

Haven't read back more than a few pages but shocked there's not more discussion around Max King. Now out injured for the year. Was not playing well and seemed out of favor. He's still young for a tal and has produced in the past. He's a 50+ goal a year tall forward who's 200cm+ and can clunk a mark. He's the perfect tall forward target for us. I'd be throwing serious coin at him with offer of a fresh start at a better club etc.

Are we looking for back ups or are we looking for mids who one day will take Viney’s and Oliver’s positions? As we’ve seen, back ups haven’t really done us a lot of good.

We haven't gone for back ups.  We thought Billing, Hunter, McAdam ect were going to be straight into our B22.

We have kids that are going to take over, Windsor, Rivers, Kossie, Kolt and the like plus some more draft picks over the next couple of years.  But our list lacks depth.

Think there will be a lot of clubs asking him the question,  hopefully we are one of them.

Don’t love the idea of bringing King in. He’s often injured, doesn’t terrify defenders. Who here was concerned about him before Saint game?! Few if any I’d say. Hasn’t live up to the hype or wages, turns 24 in a few days so is long enough in the system that you know what your going to get. 
Reportedly on a mil a year so you would have to pay more than that. 
If you willing to pay that sort of coin you would have to pay big with draft capital too.

On top of that you would have to pay JVR the same as he will be as good and probably better.

He's averaged 1.96 contested marks across his career, which is better than anyone on our list bar Max Gawn at 2.06. It's double JVR FYI. Not saying JVR won't overtake him, but King was better at the same age and is better now. In fact, he's top 20 for contested marks this season despite being in poor form. He might not terrify defenders in the traditional sense of being a big brute, but he's a competitive marking specialist and hits the scoreboard. A fresh start at a new club could see him go from top 5 in the Coleman to a Coleman medalist if we keep him healthy. 

Unless a gun mid becomes available, King should be our main target in the trade period. His currency is lower than it could be at this point in time for a long term gun KPF.

What would he cost though?

Saints already likely to have picks 4 & 5 if you believe the press re: Battle compensation, so they'll play hardball

Still think its best to use early picks on promising mids. 

Key forwards after Ruckmen are the most overrated position on the field

Nice to have an elite one but not necessary, it's not the 80s!

He will stay with Saints.

We should pitch to Tim English that he can play 75% fwd 25% ruck

We had some interest in his draft year before going with Rosman. Out of contract this year and seemingly not in the blues best 22 plans.

What would people think about Dylan Shiel?  Would be an upgrade on Sparrow. and a very handy body to rotate through the midfield.  Not the best kick, but he breaks the lines and bursts from stoppages with pace.  would take too much to pry him from the Dons and they will be looking to go past him and have already. 

Hopefully we can get it right.

Hunter, Billings and McAdam hasn't really worked out.

If he was 28, absolutely. He's 31 with a significant history of injury.

If he was 28 he would cost $800k and a late first round pick. At 31 he will cost only $275k and no pick. He is a better option than Laurie.

Getting cheap veterans has been one of the Cats keys to staying at the top for the last decade.

It does depend on cost, and as long as we're not sacrificing development of genuine AFL mids by selecting someone like Shiel, I'd be for it. I wanted him when he originally went to Essendon.

I would prefer to prioritise winning every game. If the young players aren’t going better than Shiel, they can develop in the VFL.
