Petty will be my litmus test for goody and team planning.

If petty lines up in Round 1 2025 as a forward, after a 2 year failed strategy, then goody lost me.

He must be seen as all he can be. A very good key defender

demon17 did you hear what Goody said, he said Petty would be playing forward Because we have a very junior bunch of key forwards in the system and they need some one to provide experience and support around them. To me that makes a lot of sense with JVR, Disco and Jeffo in the near future. We have an experienced backline  that don’t need any extra protection just at the minute.

My mother always told us children don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see, unless it’s from the horses mouth and you have both sides. I have tried to ingrain this philosophy with my children and work associates over the years and still have to pull them up from time to time. Lol.!! I have learnt that people are usually trying to push their own barrow when retelling stories about other people.

Sure it does now. I'm talking about 2025. Point still stands.

so why not draft in an experienced forward they have had 3 years to do so

If you want to hear what players, past and present, and agents are talking about head to Lamaro’s in South Melbourne.
The sheer volume of footy people who hang there is incredible.

I happened to spend an afternoon there last week and heard interesting stories about the Dogs, Dons, Freo, Tiges and as the regulars know I am a Dees supporter, Melbourne.

I won’t post what I hear as I think I was basically put on notice last time BUT what Dazzle said about Petracca was very similar to what I heard on Friday. Clubs will be testing the strength of that rumour no doubt.

Yep. I knew an opposition club board member who was friends with Gubby when he was at GWS. He gloated about signing old mate Tom prior to his last season with us.

Don’t like him but he was pretty good at getting shady stuff done.

In 1996 I played for the Geelong Falcons. As part of their player development they held a family night where all the players and their families came down to hear from a current AFL players family about the transition to AFL life. Gary Moorcroft’s mother came to speak to us, and gave the most scathing, angry review of the AFL system I’ve ever heard. This was only confirmed by my friends who got drafted - who were told in no uncertain terms not to include their families and girlfriends in club business.

I know first hand of former Melbourne players who were told by the club to end relationships that got in the way of their football. You only have to look at what we know from the Hawthorn debacle to see the battle between the personal, family and professional is very messy, and clubs want it cut and dry. We pay you, you belong to us, and us alone.

A lot of families feel very isolated by the clubs, and the clubs often make it that way, as they need it to be clean. It’s a massive transition from being involved in every aspect of your child’s sporting life to having absolutely no involvement, and it creates a lot of resentment and disappointment. It’s not the dream people imagine.

Unfortunately we have not had the flexibility with our list due to older players being contracted, last year we had to drop Deakin Smith off our Rookie list to open a spot for Kynan Brown and I can’t remember a key forward that was available.

I wouldn’t want to say. The player was on our list at the time and giving his time post season to the local footy club. As a father of young kids I loved chatting to his Dad about what it’s like to have a child playing AFL… I can’t wait to live vicariously through my kid’s success 😉

Thanks Whitey.

Petty needs to get a kick & kick a goal or two also or he’s no good for anyone

You wouldn't know he's a Dees player these last few months, despite the fact that he's incredibly active on social media. No social media that I've seen, no club media at all. Could all be an innocent explanation behind it. Think and hope the club would move heaven and earth to keep him happy, but also believe we have some serious egos in positions of power who wouldn't take dissent very kindly.

We traded for BBB 2020 which worked well the following year.

Who have we bypassed since, who is affordable and wanting to come our way?  They don’t grow on trees.

Yes, of course a bag of goals, and straight shooting would be great, but he has been plying as a high CHF most of the time.

Mason Wood?  Wood grows on trees.  Sean Lemmens perhaps?  Twiggy Dunne? (might be a bit old)

I could branch out, but I'll leaf it alone for now.

We do need the riddler back giving us some riddles this off season…

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
