Christian Petracca hasn’t been seen since the King’s Birthday Clash against Collingwood back in June but has provided an update on his condition after suffering a vast array of internal injuries in that clash.

“It’s been quite tough… it’s been pretty difficult both mentally and physically,” Petracca told AFL360.

The Demons superstar went for his first run last week in what he described as a positive, “little milestone”.

His training has changed drastically however, revealing he is not allowed to train with a heart rate over 110bpm.

“I just have to trust it… I can’t get my heart rate about 110 because of my spleen,” he said.

“My running is very, very slow, I might have to come and run with you Robbo at Warrandyte River!” he joked.

Petracca said the time on the sidelines has allowed him to invest more time and energy to his social media and cooking.

“It’s been really tough but the thing that’s giving me the most joy at the moment is the stuff away from the game – my social media and my cooking. It’s given me a great sense of purpose and I’m really grateful that I have something away from the game that’s given me a lot of perspective and routine.

“When footy is taken away from you… to have something away from the game is really enjoyable.”

He said dealing with this injury setback was more difficult than his ACL injury during his first year in the League.

“There’s been a range of emotions, sitting in this uncomfortablility of not being able to play. I’ve had a long-term injury before in my first year with an ACL, but this is a totally different ball game,” he said.

“With an ACL you can physically see the progression and improvements but with internal organs you just don’t know what’s going on and you have to trust what the people around you are telling you.”

Petracca’s absence has left a gaping hole in Melbourne’s midfield and it’s now unlikely that they’ll secure a finals berth in 2024.

Don't think we'll ever see him back to his best again to be honest. There'll be a lot of psychological hurdles that will really take time to get over and then the physical aspect of being hesitant of getting another knock in that area.

Just another note and not wanting to start any controversy, but I bumped into a current players folks at the local footy two weeks ago and we discussed the current state of the club etc.

We got on the topic of Petracca and they stated that apparently there is still tensions between the Petracca camp and the footy club. Christian isn't overly happy still but they put that down to him just being so isolated from the footy club environment and his mates. But clearly there is still some underlying issues there that need to be amended from both parties.

Also confirmed that there are a number of players certainly not happy within the club and that's senior players included. This is based around number of factors including team selections, current game plan and obviously the aspect of now missing out on finals as examples. 

I personally wouldn't be surprised if we have another off season where a top line Melbourne player attempts to seek a fresh start elsewhere similar to Petty last year.

Heard exactly the same through different channels re Christian and the club. Doesn't sound great, hopefully it can all be worked out.

I find rumours of players being unhappy (not including Trac) hard to believe given everyone has re-signed recently, including a player in Petty who the media were 100% was going back to Adelaide. Langdon has signed for 4 more years, Kolt and Windsor have both signed long term extensions. I could definitely see Tomlinson being unhappy given we hardly play him... but hard to see who else would be.

Time will tell though if players start asking for trades then maybe there is truth to it.

There wouldn't have been a big queue of teams looking to sign Petty this year unfortunately.  I hope he'll get back to his best in defence

You'll get unhappy players in every club regardless how successful they are.

That can come down to team selection and probably a number of other factors as well.

There are players at every single club that would be  unhappy and this can be for a variety of reasons.  Trac no doubt would be scared from what happened but the fact the club has let him go to Noosa on an extended break, shows they are looking after him.  I have no doubt he will get back to his best and we haven’t seen the best of him yet

Re players not happy about selections, etc, well that is just bloody pathetic. Maybe those players could help by getting a kick, win a contested possession or two, nail a 20 metre pass which some find hard to do! [censored], prima donnas 

At the end of 2020 I had the pleasure of chatting to the father of a player who is now on another list. He didn't have great things to say about the communication within the club between the coach and players... Wasn't too scathing but definitely wasn't complimentary. At the time I was a little concerned but then 2021 happened. I think footy clubs are big places... Lots of players, lots of coaches, lots of family. There are always going to be issues happening... Most families are like that.

Interesting stuff.

To be fair there is also going to be different ways of communicating and not every player's preferred method will gel.

I remember long after Darren Jolly left he spoke about how Daniher seemed to only care about you if you were in the 1's or something to that effect and it came across as click bait. When you have 22 guys to communicate with week after week it's not unheard of focusing more of your time on them.

What exactly are his family annoyed about?

Because it took 3 doctors and 6 hours in a hospital setting for him to be properly diagnosed and treated. Did they expect a doctor on the field with no imaging to pick up the injury? Are they mad that we let him back on the ground? Are they upset about his handling post injury?

Is it just general parental concern for their kid and needing to take that concern out on someone, or is there any real reason for his family to be annoyed at the club?

Who cares what a parent supposedly said at a local footy match. Petty, Langdon, Turner, Windor and Koltyn all signed contract extensions over the past couple of months which says alot more about the state of the club than such heresay.

Petty will be my litmus test for goody and team planning.

If petty lines up in Round 1 2025 as a forward, after a 2 year failed strategy, then goody lost me.

He must be seen as all he can be. A very good key defender

I wouldn’t want to say. The player was on our list at the time and giving his time post season to the local footy club. As a father of young kids I loved chatting to his Dad about what it’s like to have a child playing AFL… I can’t wait to live vicariously through my kid’s success 😉.
