CASEY: RD 11 vs Collingwood VFL

He doesn't have contested marking ability to compensate.

Is that a skill or a size issue?

Not many players these days are true contested marking beasts. And I think we've seen that it is ok for a tall forward to be a rangy type who runs hard, marks the ball up the ground and gathers possessions around the ground more than one out. The real key though is that when they are in the wrestle situation they need to at least halve the contest).

Both I think deanox. But perhaps I am biased.

Dees will win tomorrow. I'm not one to bag any Melbourne player but Fullerton didn't excite me last week against Coburg. If he was winning the ruck today, Collingwood got nothing tomorrow, not even Mason Cox to throw his knees and elbows around erratically causing maximum damage and somehow avoiding suspension. Max will drag us over the line take it to the bank

Been banging on about this for two years welcome to the club.

What about Windsor, Bowey and Kozzie?  Rivvo - while not small, is a good running and delivery player too.

I really don't think we can take too much out of today, Collingwoods depth problems are worse than ours.

Still, plenty of positives with Kolt playing above the opposition and Kent on debut.

You'd hope White will get picked up by an AFL team when Tassie joins the league - if he's not too old.

We need a quick skilled  thinking midfielder, riv is not one of those.

Of the others McAdam played well but so he should against this Pies side who make us look like champions. Too light for AFL level IMO. At the top level is you are light you need to be very good. He is not very good and at his third club.

This demonstrates that you have no idea. What on earth is "too light" ?

That's a subjective & meaningless statement.

And get it right - McAdam is at his 2nd club not his 3rd.

Do hope I'm wrong, but other than Frankston reflector- beach shades, not sure the young lad offers a real point of difference.

Fixed. Off to eat a bit of humble pie.

The delivery wasn't great but my biggest concern was that he rarely got separation on his opponent. Needs to work on his leading patterns

Would a forward forward coach be of use to him (and us all)???

But we have Stafford....lmfao you cannot see our functional forward line....people jump on about Petty and co but it would be a nightmare to play in even Pickett from demonland would not kick a goal...

Kozzie has no tank and turns the ball over when rushed he is an instinct player and should just play around the fifty and goals.

Windsor is only a new player and playing on the wing Give him a couple of pre seasons and he will be alright has football brains and natural instinct.

Bowey is another who could he has football noise and has some speed on him.

The best stat today was clearances. Last week we got killed. Today Kolt & Sestan had 8 each and White 10 with Fullerton also making a significant contribution. Therein lies the secret, win the pill and get it out of the centre quickly.

It seems Verrall has his calf strapped and Fullarton is being given more time in the ruck. BBB sharing the load.

I don’t think there is any doubt that BBB is the best forward out of the 3 and is in the best form, but there are questions about his ability to give Max a break in the ruck.

Likewise Fullarton needs to show more in the contest - that is stopping him from playing A’s. Might need to work a little on his defensive side of the game.

Verrall has shown ability in the ruck but probably needs to get a bit more desperate in attacking the ball in the air. Has done a few nice blocks for others today in the forward line. Looks to me like he just has his shin guard strapped in place, but happy to be told I’m wrong.

From past watching Casey and today my thoughts  of the forward / ruck options who have been around for a while I believe Fullarton is the only one with enough talent to make it at AFL level. He is a bit light but has the smarts / Ability to get around that problem.

Verrall Good ruckman at VFL level but slow around the ground a pity because he has the size.

Not in any way trying to compare Verrall with Max, but Will is just 20 yo.   Max didn't establish himself until he was around 22 or 23 as I recall, so Will does have a bit of time on his hands.   If he could become a "fairly good ruckman", even half a Max, by 25 that would be an achievement.   (I haven't seen him play but just wondering if it is good to write him off - if that is what you are meaning or perhaps not - at this early stage in his career?

white superb - lead the way

Much better game today from White. I was pretty harsh on him last week but he really showed the way for the younger guys (everyone else?) and put his body on the line rather than trying to do too much finessing with the ball.
A blunt instrument is sometimes just as useful as a scalpel. As long as you’re not trying to do the job of one thing with the other.
Thought Sestan’s work today was very good. Could possibly be a future Swiss Army knife?

AMW also deserves a mention.
I don’t know if there is a place for McAdam in the A’s if he doesn’t improve his defensive capabilities/intent. We know the skill is there, but at the moment it’s all about scoring.

Similarly, Fullarton had 2 goals kicked against us by sneaking forward and competing with BBB in the air, hoping for a sneaky goal. The ball was easily rebounded as the Collingwood midfield was wide open.
Tholstrup definitely played better this week. The past few weeks he’s been guilty of trying to do too much, a bit like White, which has seen him get caught HTB. Would like to see him take a leaf out of Sestan’s book and find leading options in the forward line.

A much much better team effort today, lead by the Kolt and Ollie Seston who showed a glimpse of their future capabilities along with Tom Fullarton, Shane McAdam, Will Verrall, Benny Brown, Andy Moniz-Wakefield, Mitch White and his Casey boys. Just as an aside is Ash Johnson Shane’s brother?

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
