If my memory serves me well, Verrall was tracking really well this season from a development perspective, even seemed close to a call up a few times, but he seemed to be set back a fair bit by a concussion mid to late in the season?

And perhaps we need to be reminded how many years apprenticeship did MG#11, the greatest ruckman of modern times if not ever to get up to AFL standard?  I know he had injury issues and I am not expecting Verrell to reach his lofty heights but talls take time

He is developing fine.

Verrall tried hard but he got monstered most games by physically stronger B grade ruckmen & if he cannot overcome that issue he will struggle to make it.

I’m not sure if you’re relying on the stats, or are actually watching the games?

Verrall was better than even against most others - even Bryan and Moyle.
The issue was playing him less than 60% game time and then mostly forward as they tried to turn Fullarton into a ruck.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Fullarton in the backline next year, partially covering for Tommo leaving.

Anyway, why are we talking about other players in the Luker thread?

Also, I believe it’s Kentfield. Kenterfield makes me think I see kangaroos up ahead…

It makes me think of a Peter Allen song about a certain saddler.

His development is slower than his leg speed.

Verrall may not be a number 1 ruckman, but I can see him as a key forward/backup ruckman.

He will be a senior player for us. You heard it from me.

Next year hopefully.

What’s your thoughts on Kentfield? I like his first game but after that he seemed to become invisible.

I think you are right.   No 1 ruckmen are 207cm size now and that will only increase.   Will is listed at 199 so it's asking a lot to give away 8cm or more.

TBH I have no thoughts on him, as he didn't really get into any Casey game, after he came here mid year.

We will need to judge him through next year, after a pre season with us, to see if he shows something.

He is a big strong lad so that helps.

I’m not sure if it’s really heading that way tbh.
The changes to the ruck rules this year has benefited the ones that can wrestle and use their strength just as much as the taller ones like Max.
They’ll probably change the bloody rules again in a few months. (Actually, if they get rid of the 10m circle, there might be less PCLs from the centre bounce and a better contest, but that’s another story).

JT took a bet on Verrall and Kentfield. They both showed something and then had interrupted draft years. He got them for bargain basement and so expected to need at least some time.

And as we all know…

time is a traveller…

I really hope that WCW is wrong and Luker doesn’t read this thread…he’ll be wondering wth people are yabbering on about. And also why every other player is mentioned in his thread? Probably will think we all have adhd?

Get this guy a full pre season.

Unless he wants to be traded home or has concerns about building his brand I don't intend to talk about Luker Kentfield until then.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
