The Casey Demons are back home this weekend to face a tough challenge from the competition’s leading stand alone club, Williamstown. Another difficult fixture from the point of view of selection of players with AFL prospects due to a break of only 4 days to the Carlton game.

CASEY DEMONS vs WILLIAMSTOWN Sunday 5 May 2024 at Casey Fields, Cranbourne East at 2:05pm

Along with most DL’ers (I assume) I’ll be keen to ‘see’ the performance of McAdam and Fullarton first and foremost.
Probably Verrall and Adams next. I’ve little to no interest in the performance of Schache, Hunter, BBB or Jefferson. Harsh, but factual. I think the first two will be delisted at season’s end. BBB may not last that long ie retire.

On the question of whether and when Shane McAdam gets a game with Melbourne, I would suggest that it will be later rather than sooner. If the club has already decided that he plays with Casey this week, then it’s highly unlikely that he would saddle up four days later against Carlton. The next opportunity would be against the Eagles in Round 10 (May 19) which is 3 weeks away.

Well Hunter was in the 23 permanently prior to injury so thats an interesting call. Jefferson is still an uknown although he's just not getting enought of it. Nobody was talking up Howes even right up to round 1. Nobody. And he's showing that potential now.

Hope they rest Brown

Absolutely no reason to play him at Casey at this point.

McAdam is a tough one as he could be in line for the Carlton game. I'd give him three quarters.

Need better input from the midfield or it will be a wasted game for the forward guys

I think most D’Landers are very interested in Jefferson despite their views. We all hope he develops into an AFL player. I’m not riding him off yet.

yeah definitely need to draft some one for midfield during midseason draft.  Whether good to go or young with potential.   There's not much in the stocks at Casey.  Seston looked the best of them last week but he's more HFF.

Spot on Stinga.

We are bereft of an extra quality mid.

That should be our highest priority just ahead of finding the ever elusive KF to replace BBB and/or Petty if he leaves at season's end.

I'm interested but not this season so much.

He's at least one (maybe even two) pre-seasons away from us knowing whether he'll make the grade or not.

At this point he's physically a long way off impacting much at VFL, let alone the next step up.

The selectors may have him in mind to play against Carlton on Thursday next week. If he plays for Casey on Sunday, that would only give him a four day break which would be a bridge too far for BBB.

Look, I'm a Benny Brown fan but based on form at AFL and VFL last week going at goaless and 7 disposals he should not be anyway near AFL selection.

I would even have Tom McDonald as my preference if it came down to needing a senior body up forward instead of Brown.

But he's named emergency so what would I know..

Werridee, there was an article linked on here today say Farris-White will be playing in a development league for the rest of the year.

Just FYI in case you missed missed it.

This is the report from Callum Twomey on afl.com.au ~

PROJECT TALLS JOIN AMATEUR CLUBS by Callum Twomey

TWO DEVELOPING AFL-listed talls have been assigned clubs in the Victorian Amateurs competition for this season in a bid to give them more game time experience.

Melbourne's Kyah Farris-White will play at St Bede's Mentone and Richmond's Oliver Hayes-Brown will play for Old Ivanhoe in moves designed to give them more opportunities to develop.

It gives both the chance to grow as rucks which they otherwise would not get at their VFL sides due to other talls being ahead of them, with the AFL approving the moves.

The Category B pair both come from basketball backgrounds – Farris-White played high school basketball in Canada and America while Hayes-Brown is a former Perth Wildcats basketballer.

Farris-White played for the Dandenong Stingrays last year and is a 206cm prospect while the 23-year-old Hayes-Brown is 208cm.

Whether they are selected in their respective VFL sides or play at Amateurs level can be decided week to week depending on player availability.

Rivals watch Saint, free agency switch floated, Hawk's trigger

If this sounds familiar, it’s because I’ve been advocating this sort of strategy for players like KFW coming out of systems that are outside the usual pathways. KFW appears to have struggled to adapt at this level and I commend the club for this initiative to get the young ruckman up to speed in what is, after all, a very specialised craft in our game.

St Bedes Mentone are in VAFA Premier B Division which should provide him with some good ruck opposition. They play Old Haileybury tomorrow at Mentone Reserve where he will most likely come across Casey listed ruckman Jack Bell who should provide him with a good test. There are also quite a few solid ruckmen in that division which includes nearby Beaumaris which had a young Collingwood listed player doing his apprenticeship a couple of years ago. This is what I wrote in the Casey thread for the first round vs Box Hill Hawks at the end of March:-

Not saying this line up will be the one that runs out but, if it is, that forward line is overly stacked with at least one too many talls surely?

Personally i think Jeffo would be better served doing a short apprenticeship behind the ball.  Play him back-of- shoulder on some decent forwards that will take him to the ball more often.

Swap him out for Moniz who, while still doing a decent job down back, is being left to rot on the vine here.  Much better playing his natural small forward role who pushes up into the mid at times.

I’d do the opposite DD. I’d scatter the other talls  and make Jeffo the main man. I think he is being crowded out by the others. Give him the main role for a few games to see if he can step up.

If there weren't so many NC!   We are talking three other KFs plus Verral resting there for Fullo at times.

Where do you put them all?  BBB used to play some time high up the ground last season but can barely raise a gallop on the lead right now.

FD probably wanting to see more of Fullo in his mostly HF role as it's early days.

That leaves the Shack.  I guess he could go back but that might make us too tall down back?

 Not necessarily.
The VFL competition does not seem to allow all the teams to play weekly.

So going to another that does play weekly he can get more games.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
