I remember Ray Smith from the Dons being a very serviceable backman

I wish supporters would get Darren Bennett's name right. It's . . .

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenett.

Vinny Catoggio said he kicked the best goal of his career at the Deez.

  • I look control of ball in the square
  • Balked
  • Dodged
  • wrong footed
  • took a bounce and dobbed it.

Only problem . . . I was the only bloke in the goal square.

Yes let’s add Cam Pedersen and Jeffrey Garlett as other notables.  Both were very handy recruits through the transition years.   👏👏

Trade in players who went on to be Bluey Truscott winners

Jeff White 2004

Laurie Fowler 1975 1979 1980

Gary Baker 1978

Brent Moloney 2011

Bernie Vince 2015

Stephen Icke 1982

I respectfully beg to differ. He left Collingwood in somewhat acrimonious circumstances.  Loved his time at the Dee's.

Well Peter Moore has stated that he would have preferred to have been a one club player; doesnt mean he didn't like the Dees though I suppose

Bernie Vince played 100 games for us. Hopefully if he has kids they choose us over Crows.

Not Chris Heffernan.

Steven Icke and Anthony Ingerson were two that immediately came to mind in defence.

Ingo was a gun.

A few others we picked up from other clubs in that era went all right as well:

Peter Rohde

Marcus Seecamp

Brett Lovett 235 games - All Australian

Brian Wilson 154 games - Brownlow Medallist

Laurie Fowler 140 games - 3x MFC B&F winner

Gary Baker 127 games -MFC B&F winner

Brent Moloney 122 games- MFC B&F winner

Anthony Ingerson 121 games

Michael Hibberd 113 games- All Australian 🏆

* Jake Lever 110 games 🏆

* Jake Melksham 107 games

Bernie Vince 100 games - MFC B&F winner

below 100 Games, notable players include

*Ed Langdon 94 games 🏆

Carl Ditterich ( Captain/coach, MFC B&F winner)

Ricky Jackson, Clint Bizzell, Dom Tyson, Marcus Seecamp, Peter Rohde, Henry Coles, Graham Gaunt, Shane Zantuck, Alan Jarrott, Darren Bennett, Stephen Powell, Cam Pedersen, Jeffrey Garlett, Sam Frost, Daniel Cross, Chris Heffernan.

Of course there’s been some big names like Peter Moore (MFC Brownlow Medallist) , Kelvin Templeton, Jordan Lewis, Byron Pickett and Brent Crosswell.

Who could forget Mark “Jacko” Jackson.

Others that were less memorable Mitch Clark, Chris Dawes, Les Parish, Craig Turley.

They all played in the mighty red and blue.

Gary Moorcroft?

Two of the most important recruits for Melbourne were Bernie Vince and Jordan Lewis

They were at a time when Melb was crud for years and no gun player wanted to come near the club

We were in a critical part of our building phase with numerous young players and no one with Premiership experience on the field. Vince was a two time B&F winner and a great teacher

In fact there were very few at the club with any Premiership experience until Roos came along. No one knew how to win.

And Lewis, with 4 Premierships was possibly the most important because of his stature in the game. Players hung off every word he said and followed has advice.

These two with Roos (and Peter Jackson) rescued the MFC.

I will be forever grateful.

Totally agree. I would add Daniel Cross, for the training standards he brought, to those two as well.

David Rodan, Tomas Bugg, Joel MacDonald and Alistair Clarkson. Now better known for post playing activities.

Shaun Smith. Mark of the century but in hindsight a bad taste in mouth for other reasons.

Jordan Lewis. Helped us get out of the doldrums.

Paul Johnson.  Phillip Read.  Adam Tomlinson. Bill Nettelfold.  Wayne Gordon.   Craig Nettelbeck. Shannon Byrnes.  Paul Bryce.  Paul Rouvray. Jamie Duursma.

Wayne Gordon coming from Collingwood played in 1980 and 81 for us. Tragically he got cancer, had to retire and passed away in 1983 aged 29.

I remember him specifically for his part in 'that' coast-to-coast, match-winning scoring chain!

We drafted him but he never crossed to Victoria from his native S.A.

Played for Adelaide and was then traded to Sydney where he didn't play a single game.

Joel McDonald was arguably the biggest "howler" we made in recent history.

For some reason bizarre PR reason the club was telling its members what a coup it was recruiting Joel when in fact he was a plodding journeyman.

Anyway we took him & next pick Tigers picked Dylan Grimes (whose brother Jack was already at the Dees).

Probably the crime of the century.

We also drafted Darren Jarman but he refused to come and stayed in Adelaide before going to the Hawks a year later.

Absolute draft tampering

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
