Casey Demons are back at their fortress this Saturday afternoon with everything pointing to a tough day at the office. Add the well documented injuries to players at AFL level to the need to preserve some extra bodies because of the five day break between the MFC’s two Adelaide games and you have the recipe for another disappointing outcome for Casey. On the brighter side, it will give some younger players an opportunity to perform at this level and to test their mettle.

I watched the Casey game last week and there was a glaring problem with the rucks where frankly, our current crop of ruckmen aren’t yet physically equipped to take on the really big men in some of the stronger VFL sides.

A couple of years ago the Casey Demons brought back ruckman Jake Spencer out of State league retirement for a surprise appearance to cover for a shortage of big men as a result of injuries. I think that they need to find someone like him if they want to be competitive.

We played Jack Bell for a couple of seasons after Majak Daw retired. Many here were asking that he be drafted. He had a few years at St Kilda as a youngster I believe

Not sure where he's playing this year

When is the team announced vs Dishlickers at Casey Saturday?

My recollection is that the Jake Spencer experiment was not that sucessful.

I was disappointed to see Jack Bell leave. Quality young man showing continuous though gradual improvement.

May have returned to the VAFA Old Haileyburians. Season not getting started in B section until 13/04/2024.

I think Casey is not as strong as last year, with regular players like Moose, Kye Turner, Bell, Ellison, Valentine, Buntine  and Grey leaving and also AFL listed players like Harmes, Dunstan and JJ. Then when combined with the Smith and Gus losses and the long term injuries to Melk and Disco, with the result a lessening of the talent available to Casey.

Has Jack Bell left?

He was included on the Casey list that was issued just before the start of the season.

According to the club lists published in Smithy's VFL List Update - 2024 Season, these are Casey listers coming back from last year -

Riley Baldi, Jack Bell, Paddy Cross, Tyler Edwards, Tom Freeman, Max Gregory, Ned Moodie, Charlie Muley, Harvey Neocleous, Charlie Peters, Tom Sheridan, Roan Steele, Ziggy Toledo-Glasman, Ryan Valentine, Mitch White

Jack Bell and Ryan Valentine are both still on the books, if this is to be believed. I understand they do have some connection with clubs in the VAFA which allows them to play over there if not selected in the VFL. Corey Ellison moved across town after the 2022 season and played for Williamstown last year. I believe he’s still at the Seagulls.

These are the newcomers -

Riak Andrew (Berwick/Dandenong Stingrays), Jack Behnk (St Bedes-Mentone), Leo Connolly (St Kilda), Max Coughlin (Hampton Rovers), Andrew Green (Cranbourne/NT Thunder Academy/Palmerston), Campbell Hustwaite (Collingwood VFL), Eddie King (Richmond Juniors), Caleb Lewis (Footscray), Kobe Shipp (Beaconsfield/Dandenong Stingrays), Brayden La Planche (Rowville/Eastern Ranges), Mitch Szybkowski (Frankston), Kai Windsor (Box Hill Hawks).

In addition to the above, it was reported recently that Oscar Van Dam, a promising young Tasmanian from North Launceston and the Tasmanian Devils has also been added to the list.

Thanks for the update KC glad that Bell is still on our list, do you know when the team for tomorrow’s game will be posted?

Late changes notified

Fingers crossed for a more coherent performance from Casey come Sunday. A few guys will be racking up some Velocity points returning from being standby emergencies in Adelaide. Valentine and Kai Windsor named in the emergencies too. May get a call up in due course. Will be watching Oliver Sestan’s and AMW’s performances with a degree of interest.

Agree, it's tough in the VFL without a decent, big bodied ruck.

It's also important in terms of being able to practice similar set ups etc in the magoos as the ones.

I think verell looks a player. Undersized, but he's young and will be a big lad in 12 months time.

A year at Casey will be terrific for his development.

We will get monstered in the middle throughout the year at this rate as we have no credible ruck and the mid stocks are shot.

Early days and i guess we need to be patient & have faith blah blah blah but this is starting to have "a year to forget" type feel about it.

I just hope we can piece something together so any youngsters and out-of-form / coming back from injury senior MFC players have a decent chance to ply their trade, develop their skills & gain some confidence .

Does anyone really think Tomlinson, Laurie and Fullerton will play? Surely the emergencies will be rested and in Adelaide in case required.

They always take one or two emergencies up in these cases and in view of the five day break it would be wise to take all three up there and rest them in case they’re required for the Gather Round game.

This is especially so after the embarrassing fiasco last year when Melbourne travelled across the Nullarbor to play in Perth, flew back to Melbourne and then to Adelaide with disastrous results.

At least 2 players like Laurie and Tomlinson won’t play.  It’s going to be a boys v men type of game.  Bulldogs to win by 50+ unfortunately.  Too many senior Dees players unavailable

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
