Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Have to cover Butters.

Maybe a role for Sparrow and Billings this week?

He's their main play maker and tore us a new one last time

@binman loved the analysis of the stats guy (think is name is Daniel Hoyne?) speaking with Gerard Healy about our new plan to score more from the back half. I think the one thing that the media are sleeping on is just how good our half backs actually are. McVee, Rivers, Howes and Bowey are all elite kicks and are going to be so dangerous. I actually believe that is the best group of half back users in the competition

hmm, i wouldn't call them elite - i'd call them neat

they all don't bite off more than they can chew and make 'sensible' decisions rather than 'risky' ones

perhaps with greater experience will come greater desire to take the game on, in the mould of blakey from the swans, williams or saad from carlton, and naicos or crisp from the filth

That is a fair assessment, but let's not forget they are 22, 20, 21 & 20.......

Great pod again, boys. Your consistent level of detail is hugely impressive, across the podcast spectrum I reckon, not just footy. Perfect accompaniment to a Tuesday morning exercise session!

Thanks @george_on_the_outer for the shout-out on medical/injury stuff. I am indeed a physiotherapist (not an orthopaedic surgeon….don’t have quite the ego for that 😉), of 35 years and counting in sports/orthopaedic work. Am basically the wallpaper at a Melbourne practice that specialises in knees, including a huge amount of post-surgical rehab. This includes long relationships with all those surgeons you hear about in the AFL media. As such, I’m happy to throw my expertise around Demonland FWIW, particularly if it helps to counter misinformation, panic and sheer speculation (all of which hardly ever crop up on Demonland of course).

Exactly.

And IMHO, McVee, Rivers, Howes and Bowey area all future A graders.

For me this is another key thing thing the media is completely missing about the dees - how  much scope for improvement we have because we have so many quality young players in our starting 23 that will develop into serious AFL footballers.

On Saturday we had four players under the age of 21 - JVR, Windsor,  McVee and Howes. And Koz and Rivers are both still only 22.  Bowey will come back in when fit and he is only 21.

All seven players are in our best 23, meaning almost a third of our best team are 22 or under. That's crazy given we won a flag in 2021 and were top 4 in 2022 and 2023.

And Sparrow is only 23 and Chandler turned 24 in January (meaning nine of our best 23 are under 24 or under).

So much upside.  Upside that not other serious top 4 contender, with the possible exception of the Giants, can match.

Compare and contrast to the Pies for instance.

100% agree. Which is why I'm not as concerned about the Gawn/May retirements.

The real end of the 'era' will be Trac, Viney, Salem, Oliver, Fritsch, Lever, Langdon, ANB, Billings etc.

Mmm, Gawn and may will be hard to cover, as i'm not convinced we have cover for tmem in term sof young players.

But we both may and maxy are on big coin, so we will have some capital to to say target Darcy at Freo down the track (i cant see the Jackson Darcy combo working out long term).

And perhaps go after a Taylor or another other quality key defender.

Exactly. I think we will go free agency/trades to cover those guys, but I also won't write off Adams/Verrall just yet. We've seen Howes come in this year after a couple of years at Casey so sometimes it can click. Plus big guys take a bit longer.

I'm more saying I don't think we should start panicking about those two finishing up just yet.

I might be optimistic here, but I think Verrall (for his age) is showing outstanding signs as a future ruckman. Despite the underwhelming Casey game on Sunday, he showed (to me at least), surprising physicality and competitive spirit against Meek (a man-mountain), and exceptional endeavour in second efforts. He is however raw and clearly learning every minute, but to me, as a potential no. 1 ruckman, he’s got me excited. Don’t forget how Maxy presented as a 19 year old.

Top tier ruckman are very rare, and although we've had the luxury of having one of the best ever ruckmen it's only a point of difference rather than a requirement for a premiership. If we have to live without the best ruckman in the competition well then that's obviously not ideal but it's not as if we'll never win a clearance or be able to kick long down the line as a result.

Many thanks for another insightful and enjoyable pod guys!  It kept Mrs DoF and I totally engrossed for a couple of hours, on the first leg of a road trip from Canberra to Adelaide for Rounds 3/4.  Go Dee’s!

Tried to listen to this poddy last night to lull me to sleep (not a comment on the quality of the podcast - it's just a habit I've gotten myself into). I think I lasted about 15 minutes so I'll give it another crack tonight.

Hi @binman, can you please give the name of the stats podcast you replayed on this week's episode. The concept was fascinating and I'd like to hear it again.

Thanks for the show - it's wonderful escapism for me and many other tragic Dees, particularly after a win.

SEN has a segment each week with Daniel Hoyne from Champion Data (not sure what day or time).  The segments are eventually posted to YouTube/Spotify/SEN Website. On YouTube the segments are time coded in the episode description so you can jump straight to any Dees segment.

Here are the shows from Opening Round and Round 1. Round 2 has not been posted yet.

Just got around to listening to the podcast.  Once again, great listening and a must for all demon fanatics.  As usual,  I agreed with 90%+ of what was broadcast, which beats any other podcast/program.

Yes, you are right, there is a but.

I think it was George, when critiquing the Hawthorn game, stated he thought Hawthorn wasted pick 5 on Nick Watson.

Wow!!!  What an incredibly quick and harsh judgement on the kid. Nick was universally touted by clubs, and draft gurus, as a unique talent. He has played 180 minutes of AFL, not 180 games. We are quite rightly singing the praises of 2024 debutant, Blake Howes on Demonland. The difference being, he is in his 3rd year at a successful club. Watson is playing in a rabble of a team, and arguably a club.

Cal Twomey gave him the nickname of The Wizard, which is impossible to live up to at this stage of his career. Unfortunately, this is mentioned EVERY time he goes near the ball. It puts unreal expectations of him.

I believe he will be a very, very good player. A 200 game/400 goal career would not surprise.  Let's just give him the time all fair judges here would if he was one if ours.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
