well Casey does seem to be following the melbourne play book pretty well, very few if any are manning up.

the notion of 'manning up' hasn't been the best form of defensive set-up since before the 1990s

Commentary just said May has been released from hospital with a suspected broken rib, 1-2 weeks. Lever got good results on the scan his knee and pending some more follow up could be available to play this week.

The inside 50s this quarter have been horrid and haven’t helped any of the forwards.

And we don’t seem to be kicking it to anyone. Just kicking…. At least when we didn’t have the ball we were under pressure and it was understandable.

This goal is coming as a result of Tholstrup double grabbing at a ball again..that’s what my earlier post was referring to. As a high draft pick, I think I had high expectations for this kid. So far, he looks off the pace..not sure what those who think he should be in the seniors are seeing.

for mine, it's the little things, and the positioning in the contest

he'll ultimately be better amongst better company and playing a lesser role

Give the kid a break! He has been ok. The team has been smashed and he has had some good moments. I see some  promise for a kid playing his first game in the biggest league he has played.

I couldn't believe that people were talking up our depth coming into this season, and this miserable Casey performance highlights this.

Other than Tomlinson, who is a proven AFL player, there is nothing to get excited about with that group. Our kicking is woeful, handpasses are poor and overused, we are undersized through the middle and in key positions, and there is no great desire to tackle or provide physical pressure.

If we can't find some big bodied midfielders to replace Dunstan and Munro, it is going to be an extremely long and miserable season for Casey.

On a positive note, 8/12 players today are eligible for the rising star award, so we are very young. The four that aren’t -  Laurie (still young), Scache, Tomlinson and Fullerton are back ups. But, that was pretty ordinary. It could be a long year at Casey if we don’t get on top of our injuries.

Tomlinson is fine to come in and do his thing. Fullerton can come in and add something. There is enough to like about the 8 youngsters that they can develop into AFL players. Most role players though based on today. But they’ve got time.

worrying for Casey is that Hustwaite and our young players seem to be what we’ve got and not much else. Steele and Freeman were fine, White not well sighted, but not much else on any line.

if I was giving votes, Hustwaite, and then maybe Tomlinson, and then Kolt. Laurie did well, AMW had 1, 9, 1, 8 in his possessions across quarters and Woey and Brown ok.

In what must be perverse first in VFL football the rover Moniz-Wakefield (who was ok ) had more hitouts than the ruckman  Farris-White (who was deplorable ).Neither Verrall nor Fullerton impressed .Schache was insipid . We are in a world of hurt if Max goes down.

Missing Dunstan, Munro, Jordon, Harmes, Grey.  The engine room from 22 and 23.  Depth now eroded.

We have used a lot of our draft hand to take punts on key position players and our midfield depth has suffered a lot because of it

Cannot take much from that outing.

Needs a reset, back to execution of the basics and making it easier for your team mates.

Couldn't get their hands on the ball, and when they did it was given straight back.

This stuff about contest, has them playing from behind, continually fumbling, as they scramble the ball forward. They then get knocked off the ball and the opps get an easy out.

Get space, create ball movement, and give the leading player some good hit ups.

Develop skills and structure, not endeavor.

The two players who probably had the most to play for were Fullarton and Tomlinson. Neither did well but Tomlinson was passable. Fullarton... I'll give him a few more weeks

Does the VFL play next week or is it a bye

The list needs a big cut. A significant number of our young depth are not quick enough or skilled enough.

Fullarton was good in parts. Woey probably our best mid. Verall improved a little in second half. Tholstrup and Brown were involved and will improve on their first outing. Tomlinson was our most consistent. Laurie had his moments and certainly wasn’t all bad as some seem to suggest

Oscar Van Dam Height: 188cm, Weight: 83kg. D.O.B: 20-04-2005

It turns out that North Launceston was coached by Casey’s current coach Taylor Whitford who steered them to back-to-back premierships in 2018-19.

Oscar Van Dam was a member of the Tasmania Devils Under 18s team in 2022/3. They were pretty strong last year and he was rated just outside that upper echelon that included high draft picks Colby McKercher, Ryley Sanders and James Leake. He He performed exceptionally well in the preseason, highlighted by a 6.10 two-kilometre time trial result.

One match report from the Under 18s said that “the half-back brought plenty of dash and flair to the game with his willingness to take proceedings on. He looked clean below his knees, even when under pressure by the opposition, and made sure to be closely checking his opponent when the Knights looked dangerous inside their forward 50. Despite getting the ball at near top speed, Van Dam kept his composure more often than not, putting the ball out in front of his teammates and giving them the best chance at taking possession.”

Sounds promising. Does he get picked for Casey this week?

Awesome surname recruit him on that basis pls!!

Thanks @kev martinshocking google Sundayitis from me !!!

The original list had M.Lewis at full forward.

Looks better with Caleb Lewis at full forward.

Read that he was a young star at St Bedes in the VAFA.

Interesting to see how he goes.

I am getting worried about Jefferson.  We effectively got Jefferson and Windsor in the Jackson trade compensation. Jefferson is a good young player. Good mark but second efforts and current frame mean he’s easily beaten at VFL level. Perhaps a stint in the backline will help build more desire for the footy and the contest.

I’d give him another 18 months on the list at least.  Early days still.

jeffo wont make it.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
