Split into lines:

Centre Bounce: Max, Viney, Trac, Langdon, Sparrow, Salem, Windsor

Backs: May Lever, McVee, Bowey, Howes, Rivers, Tomlinson

Forwards: JVR, Schache, Kozzy, ANB, Chandler, Laurie, Fritsch, Billings, K Brown

So Tomlinson gets 3rd tall spot in defense.   Surprised about Howes going on Richmond practice.  Hope he goes ok.

Why are you surprised? These young guys will never improve if they only get once chance and then get dropped straight away if they don’t perform.

Hmm. On paper that is not a forward line worthy of finals. Take Kozzy out for our opening game and it's bottom 6 stuff.

I would hope we're gonna see some Petracca forward early in the season like we did for periods last year, but with Angus gone and Clarry out for now, we aren't deep at centre bounce or stoppages either.

I'm trying to be positive, but there's definitely some worry for the first 5-10 rounds of the season.

Positively, there's huge room for us to improve up forward if we can get the likes of Petty and McAdam fit. I really hope Woewodin is ready to play soon too.

Carlton final last season. The 7 fwds on the left, tomorrow nights on the right.  2 upgrades in bold and Tmac/Schache cancel each other out.  Looks finals worthy to me.  and thats not adding in Petty and McAdam who play when fit.

Smith - JVR

Fritsch - Fritsch

Kozzy - Kozzy

Spargo - Billings

TMac - Schache

ANB - ANB

Chandler - Chandler

Beautiful morning for a run, minimal wind, and the day has a little crispness to it (started warming up as the session progressed).

They weren't showing much joy as they went about it (to be expected, Gus and other issues).

I was told that earlier on, Petty was having a run and a kick.

McAdam's was running harder with his program, and Melky was working well in his rehab (no strapping).

Good to see that Fullaton is ready to go, as was TMac who were in the VFL squad (no Casey players).

Starting 23 out there for a simulated captain's run. Looks like K.Brown is a forward. Originally was trialled as a mid and Tholstrup as a forward. I reckon K.Brown is seen as progressing stronger than Tholstrup and so gets the chance. Hope they rest, K.Brown in the 4th quarter tomorrow and give Tholstrup a late run. Given that the others didn't join the 23,  however I assume the game will be only the 23 that ran out today.

Goody ran most of the session. Great to him him using his whistle, and getting heavily involved by structuring/voicing what he wants. Usually he delegates more often to the others. Nothing like an up and about Head Coach.

They were switched on in the drills, plenty of noise, and excellent skills. Really enjoyed seeing the small fwds working on and executing lovely passes into the tall fwds by Billings, Laurie and Kossie. Thought Fritsch fumbled the ball and missed some easy goals today. JVR is ready to hit the big time. Schache was one paced, though no errors. Had a discussion with a fellow supporter who reckons (I agreed), Tomlinson could play well up fwd, though unlikely.

May clumsy and losing his feet (could have been the sun in his eyes), hoping he can get his 'mojo' on, which he had in previous sessions.

Salem looking strong, training with the mids, plenty of composure, energy, and run.

Windsor moves so well over the ground.

Viney, on target to be the best I have seen of him.

Tracc still with some anxieties when kicking set shots for goal (appeared to have). Two out of three hit the right spot.

No contact at all. Last time I saw any tackling drills was ages ago, and the tackling during sims has been diminished/less impact. They hit each other hard prior to the Christmas break, now more about the defensive structure, run and transition. I am a bit worried as we have not done this type of drill in order to prepare to be 'hard'. Hoping, they have been working on it in the closed areas. We cannot drop our early games otherwise the media will get on the 'going backwards bus'. Tomorrow is not as important as the away trip to Sydney, but gee I hope we bring some tackling pressure.

666’s pics confirm Harry Petty having an early run and kick. Jake Melksham for all those recently just back from Mars. Screams ‘play me now’ but must be on world record pace for an earlier return than normally expected. A good start to the season than the Calvary will arrive.

Appreciate your reports, Andy.  Like most of us, I'm ready for footy again.

At this stage it looks like a close race between Verrall and Fullarton for the ignominy of having their surnames continually misspelled.  (The crown is vacant with the retirement of Bradshaw.)

Swallow and Bowie both say hello.

Happy to hear it’s all minimal contact. It’s a long long season and a war of attrition

Off topic but anyone awaiting tickets for the Sydney game, mine have just arrived.

Perhaps also due to reducing brain injuries as they transition to the full game experience.

The scientists with expertise on CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), mention that those medium regular impacts during training may cause more harm to the brain then previously known.

There is a push to reduce collision when training, by the medicos.

I think we’ll see the game look to minimise collision in the next few years. The bump will go and tackles will continue to be restricted

Some leages are using smart mouth guards https://www.hitiq.com/.

I think the NRL (rugby league) are trying them this year. Some came off the field for assessment though that felt the collision was minimal.

Getting a good risk assessment tool for brain injury is a big step forward, HIA are bit sketchy, given the collision has to be observed. A body worn diagnostic is much more objective.

Wear them at training.

Correction should read as Cavalry rather Calvary. Hopefully we won’t be crucified by the umpires too often this season. TC

lol- my wife works at Calvary - it’s an aged care home. Not much support to our season coming from there

Hardly inspiring 74.  Especially given that we know one of our achilles heels for the last two seasons has been our forward stakes.

What i would give for a genuinely dynamic power CHF and/or FF.

Hopefully Roo can step up a notch or two but without the likes of Petty, McAdam & Melk we are looking decidely thin on quality during the opening rounds.

Possibly longer, depending on the diagnosis of McAdam & Petty.  Petty may well be done for the entire season.

There is of course Kozzy & Fritta but we would need stand out years from both imv if we're to make any inroads and go deep into finals.

Even IF Petty makes it back at some point, the odds of being fiercely competitive and getting into some sort of top end form are stacked against with effectively no pre-season under his belt.

Ditto with Melk, BB and to a lessor extent T-Mac.  Although it would appear the FD were grooming Tom for a return to a defensive role.

Lord knows what for.  Makes no sense for mine after bringing Marty back and with Tomo & Turner (prior to injury) also being an option.

Im usually very positive prior to a season starting but have to say im already preparing for some substantial slippage in 2024.

Can only hope Clarry stays on track and returns as early as round 2 or 3 in fabulous nic.  If not i fear we may be in for a pretty rugged 2024 with yet another season of "many learnings" ahead.

And players have to learn about protecting themselves, unfortunately it's not taught at younger levels now it's head over the ball without awareness because the umps will out for me.

The kid can play, he just didn't have a good one in the first practice game.

Two efforts going back with the flight of the ball, taking possession and giving it off beautifully showed bravery and class.

Just on that he will make it.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
