Kicking off the 2024 thread with a round up from today’s Herald Sun online edition of each club’s current injury lists:-

MELBOURNE

Clayton Oliver - Has been in the rehab group after having surgery on his knee in the off-season. He has been doing sprint work and some lighter skill based activities and is expected to ramp up his training in the new year.

Angus Brayshaw - Has returned to training but still non-contact for now as he continues his recovery from the sickening concussion occurred in the finals series. Impressed in the Dees 2km time trial.

Harrison Petty - The defender is still recovering from a foot injury which ended his season early.

He remains on a modified program but will join the main group post-Christmas.

Bayley Fritsch - The forward is still being managed after twice hurting his left foot in the second half of the season. He had surgery to repair a fracture in the foot after the first incident in round 16. Fritsch is expected to join main training in January.

Jake Melksham - The forward will look to begin running again in coming weeks after rupturing his ACL in the final round of the home-and-away season. However, the 32-year-old still faces a long road to recovery.

The most depressing thread at this time of year.....

Is that a Xmas wish or a genuine possibility?

It’s what was reported.

Is that January post Christmas or August post Christmas?

After Christmas in July

The problem is not the list per se but the quality of the players on the list.

A big chunk of talent and salary cap.

Hopefully January sees them all off the list

Wasn't sure which thread this news belongs in, but Bailey Smith of the Western Bulldogs has ruptured his ACL (confirmed by the club) and will miss the 2024 season.

It's a horrible injury that I wouldn't wish on any player from any club.

recovering from an acl is seemingly not as difficult as it used to be

terrible luck for the kid

Its never a good time but to do it in pre-season seems so cruel. Couldn't see him playing next year. He will have to rehab essentially until March 2025.

And from memory he will be out of contract at the end of 2024. Its a 2 way street with contracts. Get injured and you could get shafted with a poor contract.

You are right, you wouldn't, but Brendon Maynard would have to get pretty darn close.

filth and puddy tatts were suitors this trade period; i imagine they'll be chasing him again

Do clubs have to pay the players entire season match payments even though he never plays a game.

Must be a huge downer for any club to flush 60 -70 K down the lav every month for 12 months.

It happened to us with Lever on about 850K.

Cornes must be having a fit with all these players getting massive long term contracts now Darcy got a whopper at Freo and Rozee.

Youre one twist of the knee away from a disaster.

It is the only way to keep your stars without wrecking your salary cap

It is definitely a risk worth taking. Even if they sit out one year of an 8 year contract, the savings made by giving these guys long term deals is still enormous and allows you to pay other important players.

Undergoing a different type of ‘rehab’.. Smith??

Its going to be fascinating to see how he turns out after being idle for 12 months.

hardly 12 months. I think you'll find that the moment SIA get off their rear-ends and convene, that time served will be the punishment. We will impose 2 games like every other club. He is [censored] for doing it, but wasn't the first or will be the last to take recreational drugs in-season.

Trained yesterday, but don’t know at what level.  See pic in Training Gallery on MFC website.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
