I’m pretty sure JT has talked before about not getting too caught up in trends. Which I think is right.

I still think contested ball is king, just that sides have spread the contest across more of the ground through pace, skills and work rate.

I also don’t think speed and skill are ever going out of fashion.

A question to ask with Windsor is; is positional value important in AFL drafting? The last time we had high picks JT spent them on a ruck and small forward, so I’d suggest he doesn’t see it that way so much. Powerful mids and dominant key talls are the most valuable but after that elite players are surely the aim with top 10 picks.

Is Windsor a high end talent? I’m not entirely convinced, but he has high end traits.

Caleb Windsor has excellent skills, pace and decision making to be a quality AFL midfielder.  Loves a goal. And can chase down tackle which gives him that added bonus as a running mid. 

Plays like Max Holmes.

Windsor had already been creeping up draft boards but he solidified his place as a potential pick right around the top 10 with his starring performances at the Draft Combine. The Eastern Ranges' runner came third in the 20-metre sprint (2.916 seconds) and placed in the top 10 for the standing vertical jump (73cm) and running vertical jump (92cm) events as well, showing his mix of athleticism and pure speed. The polished goalkicking midfielder also ran 6:35 minutes in the 2km time trial.

The mail is that Melbourne is just about set on selecting Windsor with its second selection here. Because the media know nothing after the first bunch of names each year, in fact some years they barely know them. Early mocks had Oliver at 15ish. No one had Jackson top 3. No one had Pickett in the first round.

The media cottoned on to our interest in Windsor, slotted him at 11. Maybe all along he's been the 6th best name on our board. We'll find out on Monday

Funny that in one of our best draft hauls in recent history, the media immediately criticised us for having “reached” on both Jackson & Pickett.

I think it’s important to note that there’s a difference between ‘didn’t’ win much contested footy and ‘can’t’ win contested footy.

Windsor played wing all year and appears to have done so with a lot of discipline. That role will inevitably result in a low contest rate if it’s played properly. When it’s his turn to go he does win contests and I think that the 30% contest rate needs to be considered in this context. If he played as a true mid the numbers might mean something but for a wingman it doesn’t make much sense.

The impressive thing about Windsor isn’t just his speed but his ability to use that speed properly. He makes quick decisions to carry the ball and get it forward before teams can set their defence, which is super valuable against disciplined AFL teams. He also uses his speed to defend and is very disciplined. He already plays the game at AFL tempo. He’s a very impressive footballer.

Cal Twomey said Windsor is light and may not play much year 1. So if we pick him we may need some patience.

I don't have many strong opinions about who we take at 6 but I certainly wouldn't be upset with Windsor.

Daicos is pretty light. It's more about Caleb's aerobic ability to play wing at this stage. And giving us some competition for wing spots would be very welcome.

I'd love him and think we got a bonus if we could get him at 11 but feel like we'd be missing out on something better if we took him at 6. I think the 'potentially special' players are deep enough to get to that first pick, while Windsor is more in the 'very good' group from all I can gather.

Besides, not only have we already brought in Billings but we're getting Andrew McGrath as a free agent at the end of next season.

The tank is interesting, both short term but more so long term.

If we take him there must be belief he can really run. But you’d rather see a 6 flat 2km time total for a winger than a 6:36.

The last pure winger JT took was probably sauce Baker and he took 6+ years to become an afl wing runner. Clearly the hope is Windsor doesn’t take that long.

There’s got to be belief he can contribute as a half forward or half back too.

Sauce was a speculative pick though, if we’re serious.

I think Windsor shows some promising ability to work in a phone box too. Good recruit time, damaging disposal, seems to relish hunting an opponent. There’s a bit more to like.

Absolutely. Just more a comment on endurance. 

At least from what we know by way of 2km time Windsor’s not elite elite. It’s unlikely he’s running with ANB and Langdon in preseason 1. 

Of course the recruiters get Yo-yo test, GPS and observing game running live to get a far better gauge. 

I think (if we pick him) they’ll aim to have him in the side playing half forward and taking some 3rd wing minutes when he’s ready to debut. The role Taj had this year when he played.

The chase down tackling is an exciting part of his game.

Agree @DeeSpencer Windsor impressed both using his pace to go forward and run, plus run down opponents. Reminds of Max Holmes in style of play.

I feel like none of the team after us have shown or been rumored to be interested in him. So i'd be confident he will be there at 11. As another poster said, pick the best player outside of him at 6. and get him at 11.

JT might have someone penciled in for 11 that he is confident no-one else will take. We don't know but I have confidence he will have the besr strategy to get the players we want
