I thought  Petty showed promise of a return to form tonight.

Also,he has a bit of nastiness about him that few of our players have. He gets on the nerves of the opposition, and I like that.

This was my take as well. I'm not saying he was incredible and showed he's the answer to our problems, but I thought he at least competed. I was so hoping kicking that early goal would give him some confidence.

I'm not a footy expert by any stretch but this was what I saw of our forwards in the flesh (first time I've been able to get to the footy in along time). Neither JVR or Petty (or Disco and Fritta for that matter) seem to get much separation from their defenders, I don't know if that's fitness or physicality but the defenders were mostly wearing them like a glove. On the rare occasion there was a bit of separation more often than not the kicks to them were scrubbers or high and on their head.

The other issue I noticed was that there was no coordination of a player putting blocks on for the other to have a one on one or better. Say what you like about TMac as a forward, but this was something he was actually really good at.

This goes back to the issue that I have been saying to every Melbourne fan I know, Stafford is not a good forward coach. He is not teaching them good leading patterns and game awareness of when your teammate is in the better spot and how to draw defenders away from them. We will not get a functioning forward line while he is our coach, it's harsh and maybe a bit cruel but the proof is in the pudding.

I agree 100% - there appear to be no leading patterns and no spread.  All congregate for the pack mark and oppositions spread off and clear way too easily.

One massive positive for HP last night and should be a confidence booster was that very telling pack mark in the dying minutes.  Inspiring

Don't know if I see Petty as a gorilla handler taking the best forward. Not yet anyway.

And who do you see in that rôle?

How would a Steve Johnston or someone of that ilk go as our forwards coach next year if they are available?

We need new blood and new ideas to direct our forwards.

Stafford has done his best for us but the time has come for him to try his hand at something else.

On Midweek Tackle last night, they referred to a bunch of Dees Players joining Huntingdale Golf Club, with an upfront $12000.00 signing on Membership fee and Petty was one of the players named.

If that is the case, it might indicate he is not intending on leaving Melbourne anytime soon.

Hope so, if Jefferson keeps showing promise then next year I expect him to be lining up with JvR and Petty to return to the back line.

Apart from Petty clunking some marks, (liked Gawn giving him a boost post game), did anyone notice that one grab by JVR, that was the most exciting thing I've seen this year him losing the double grab.

Private courses have reciprocal rights with comparative courses across the country. Petty wouldn't be blowing his $12k if he decides to leave.

I definitely did not just Google this and found out that the reciprocal access in SA is only for 30 days per year

That's a lot of money for a month of golf. To be fair $1 is also a lot of money for golf if you ask me

Reciprocal doesn’t mean you can just play there as much as you want. You have the option to play there on certain days, but you have to pay to play.

That might be to play a round, but not get membership of an Interstate course, just because you are a member of a Victorian course.

As an MCC member I can get into some English cricket grounds, but I don't get membership. Same for the RACV for another example.

Reciprocal rights don't confer membership.

Yeah and MCC has reciprocal rights to Marvel Centre Wing club (and possibly medalion?) but you still have to buy a ticket.

So I'm guessing you're NOT going to be dropping $2k for a set of Callaway Big Berthas anytime soon?

Would it matter if a new club "gifted" him a membership ;)

Not an issue...not an impediment

Me neither. I used to work with a bloke who was golf mad and he kept wanting to show me his python 😵‍💫. I had no idea he was referring to his favourite golf club. I was ready to sock him one until someone told me he was referring to his prized golf club.  😬

....On being asked what he thought of the glorious game of golf, Loates smartly said: “Well, I think it is a good walk spoilt,” which it certainly is—unless you have a good flask of “whisky” tucked under one arm, and a good style of a girl tucked under the other, while the “caddie” potters behind, and does the golfing.  (Sam Loates)...

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
