Just watched the seven news on 7play from the 06/09 and the story about all duck and interview with maynard is there but the end has been removed where he was asked who do you want to hurt.

Unfortunately the original isn't saved in the Wayback machine (aka archive.org)

I dare all Maynard apologists to explain this footage and how it can't be perceived as, at the very least, reckless.

I'll wait.

You only have to look at the Brisbane game when gawn went down to see how players are affected.

Exactly why it [censored] me to tears when clowns on here so we don’t play for each other. What utter tripe. So do people want Petracca to faux wrestle Collingwood players after the incident? Wow that’s just so tuff. You let the football do the talking and for most of Thursday night we had them right where we wanted them. Sheesh I’m annoyed we couldn’t finish a bit better.

This is where I am at. I've seen a lot of people run at the ball carrier and jump, the large majority don't hit the player on the way down.

The last smother attempt gone wrong I can recall is a couple of years back with Mitch Duncan collecting Aaron Hall, https://www.afl.com.au/video/598079/hall-knocked-out-after-duncans-smother-attempt?videoId=598079&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1618731665001
Duncan escaped both a free AND suspension, but listen to the commentary... Given where we are at now with concussion, CTE etc, There was less 'footy act' talk then than Thursday night. Obviously the main difference is Duncan was spinning and had 'less' of an idea where he was going to end up. Maynard on the other hand knew exactly what was happening.

It's how I feel about it too.

People saying it's a "freak accident" - no, it's not. It's not like a 10 sided marking contest where a stray elbow struck the temple, or even a ground ball where a freak bounce left a player prone, or one of a million other unlucky situations.

Let's be real here - players run at the ball carrier in an attempt to smother 100s of times a year. Often from directly front on. Despite this, never before in the history of the game has someone come down from a smother attempt like that. There was nothing unique about this situation at all.

The Mitch Duncan comparison in my mind actually helps. Do you know why Duncan was spinning? It's because he watched the ball sail over his head, turning mid air to see it. As you would if you had genuine intent to smother.

Maynard didn't even notice the ball flying over his head. Was already pointing everything he had at the head of no.10.

Well explained Red.

If Maynard gets off, the system is even more corrupt ( or just plain silly) than I imagined .

We will see soon enough just how deeply corrupted the AFL has become.  Is Nathan Brown quoting odd on the tribunal outcome?

Appeal on what grounds?

Collingwood player in a finals series.  Surely sufficient grounds.

There is not much support for a ban in the media. Just looked at the Sunday footy show and none of Cornes, Lloyd, Nathan Brown or Damian Barrett think he should be suspended. What am i missing here? I haven't seen too many pundits make the case for a suspension. I reckon he's going to get off.

Somewhat unsurprisingly James Brayshaw was amoung the few that was advocating for the rightful suspension to be dealt out, but he also suggested that if Angus was the aggressor he'd also be telling him that he'd just have to cop the suspension.

I've had enough of all this 'football act' shouldn't be suspended rubbish.  In my mind, the AFL have set the benchmark on this over the past several seasons.  Kade Chanldler got suspended for 2 matches accidentally falling into the back of someone when being slightly over zealous applying a takle.  Maynard's actions were on another level of reckless compared to Kade's - he should be looking at 4 - 6 weeks, not 2 - 3.

Can't go changing the rules because of finals and Brownlow contention like Crips, that would be so weak.

One thing I will say for Goodwin is that he rarely defends or makes excuses for one of our players that is in the firing line of the MRO for head high contact.

We copped Kossies 2 match suspension for a similar incident to Maynards on the chin so to speak and the the only time that comes to mind that we have appealed reciently was for the JVR spoil, which as a massive level less severe.

I do also like Goodies response post match against Collingwood, when he forcefully told the press to look at the facts of what had been the outcome with Guss.  You could tell this one is very personal to him and the way he stood up to the press and stood up for what had been done to one of our own makes me proud of him as our coach.

Conversely the way Maynard was immediately post match making excuses for himself trying to paint it as a football incident makes me sick.

Sure I heard him on commentary agreeing that there was nothing in it.

I don't often agree with Caroline Wilson, but on Offsiders this morning she accurately made reference to the AFL's hyper sensitivity to head injuries. We know the AFL already has a war chest put aside as a contingency for possible litigation. Interestingly, just after the "expert" commentators were discussing the pros and cons of the Maynard incident, channel 7 went to a promo on John Platten, for a news story they're doing on him and his CTE. I suspect this will be the context in which the Tribunal will examine the Maynard case.

She also made mention of Maynards comments in the lead up to the game which I presume was where he was asked who did he want to hurt - All of them.

The problem will be on appeal when your former colleagues get involved and use all their cunning, trickery and legal jargon to get him off, as what happened with Cripps last year

The same legal jargon peddlers that will no doubt also be getting their cut when players start making claims on the league for duty of care.  They are such overpaid leeches on our society at times.

To feel better watch the oft maligned Caro on this mornings insiders on abc IView now.

She and the rest of the panel nailed all the issues forcefully and with facts.

Appalled at the ex players commentary. Praised Laura Kane for upfront management. And called for mro officer resignation.

Thanks Caro.

You sent me up the garden path a little bit 😆 - it’s actually the ‘Offsiders’ for anyone wanting to check it out but pretty sure you need the iview app and an account as I can’t share a link and had to do the above.

AFL segment runs from 15 mins in until 22 mins.

well said. I'm very glad Goodwin made those comments. Your Pickett example is a perfect comparision, chose to bump and got him in the head. and Smith played on. We copped 2 weeks and we moved on. And that changed Kozzie, he was flying but came back not quite as instictive. He had to change his game. And so should everyone else.

I do fear however they will take this outside the tribunal like the Cripps one and manufacture an absolute rubbish response. i.e Cripps was a 'bump' so all was forgiven. pffft.

You might be right old dee (again) but I'm reckoning 5 or 6 weeks

The CTE issues in general, ongoing litigation, class actions, optics, Gus' ongoing concussion issues and Maynard's absolute guilt points towards a hefty penalty

But you have a habit of getting things right so I've got my fingers crossed

I really hope I am wrong Macca.

Cripps got off on a legal technicality.  After that, the AFL quickly moved to change the laws of the game.

I was disappointed in Gil's response to the Maynard shirt-front (sat on the fence) but by contrast, he was on the front foot when Toby charged through the umpire

He's got no leadership skills and is a pure money maker and panderer.  He was also p/weak during the Cripps fiasco (I've got Carlton mates who cannot believe he got off)

However, Laura Kane is a breath of fresh air and we need more like Laura at the top

But the boys club thinking is not confined to the actual AFL.  It's rife through the media and amongst the ex-players

The callous putting aside of the condition of Brayshaw is disgusting.  It's as if he's a mere commodity and cannon fodder

For a very long time I’ve felt like AFL is becoming harder and harder to enjoy.
This incident and the follow up from the media and fans has really solidified for me just how little I like or enjoy football beyond watching Melbourne.

The sheer lack of empathy for a man who is potentially never going to play again, is mind boggling.
While in the same breath the media is defending and protecting a known thug who has form.
It is despicable to hear and read and I’ve had just about enough of it.

A part of me wants this season to be over for us ASAP so I can just stop caring about football and take a much needed break from the steaming pile of trash that the AFL, the media and the general fans have become.

I agree it is getting harder and harder to enjoy. Callous is the word. If he doesn't get a substantial suspension it makes a mockery of the AFL's statements about protecting the head.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
