Fergus Greene? Yay nay?

Hope we're in the ear of Fergus Greene who was just delisted by the Hawks.

Probably not going to revolutionise our forward 50, but showed in the first half of the year that he knows where the goals are. Injury cut his year short and the Chol + Gunston additions haven't helped his cause.

A Hawks supporting mate of mine rated him and was disappointed to see him cut

Greene had a very solid year and I was surprised they delisted him too. He has been injured a fair bit over his journey previously with the Dogs and I wonder if his latest knee injury is a part of this.

He would struggle to get a spot with a fully fit JVR, Fritsch, Petty and Melksham, but would be in front of BB and TMac and only 25/6 years old.

We know JT always has his own order so I wouldn’t be surprised if Caddy, Leake or O’Sullivan go at pick 6 over Curtin or Sanders.

And especially if he’s looking elsewhere at 11. Collard, Tew Jiath or Charlie Edwards wouldn’t shock me.

Curtin at 6 if not Caddy/Sanders and Windsor at 11 if not Wilson.

Port , Swans, Bombers, Blues and Pies are the winners.  They have added players that will definitely fit into their best 22 for round 1.

McAdam will be in our best 23 ahead of Spargo with ANB still in and Billing's possibly a Sub.

I’d be totally amazed if we passed on Sanders if he was available.  He’s exactly what we need. Skilled smart pacy mid.

Dogs won’t take Curtain, they are stacked with talls.

Curtain at 6

Best mid available at 11

Dogs probably won't but between WCE, North, and Hawks he is a chance to be taken before we get a look in.  If he does go before us, we might actually take O-Sullivan before Sanders since there is more midfield talent to be taken at 11, whereas there is not alot of choice for KPP thereafter.

I have decided that Sanders and the key tall prospects are too boring, and that Caddy is too boom or bust

Trade up and grab Duursma, McKercher or Watto

By trading up do you mean we end up with just one first round pick for one of these 3?

I'd rather 6 & 11 over just one top three pick, but if there's a world where we can grab Norf's pick 3 & 17 or something to that effect in exchange for 6 & 11, I'd probably prefer to take that route. Obviously this only happens if it enables Norf to grab pick 1 though.

None of the highly touted guys expected to be available at our first pick seem super exciting, maybe with the exception of Caddy who would be a bit of an awkward fit.

Sanders looks like he'll be a good player but doesn't provide any real point of difference, doesn't look like he can play anywhere else other than midfield either.

Do we want to take a KPD with our first pick? Won't impact next year and we've gone tall two years running with JVR & Jefferson. Understand our hand may be forced with our second pick however given the Petty situation.

With BBB, Tom Mac, Tomlinson and Melk likely to finish with us in 2024, we are probably banking another $2m in salary cap space.

Not to mention the cap space now available will allow us to restructure existing contracts to front-load them, allowing us great cap flexibility in the future.

That’s because he’s a midfielder.  Class. Smart. Skilled.  We don’t want him anywhere else.  We have plenty of hybrid small half forwards or small half backs.  We need a potential A grader young midfielder coming through.  Everybody knows I am picking Sanders at 6 if available (or Curtin) and either OSullivan or Wilson at 11 if available.

Do we still need another experienced ruckman as back-up for Max Gawn?

Will Tom Fullarton be enough?

I would be looking at Scott Lycett from Port Adelaide if we are looking for more back-up.

Otherwise, I think former number #1 mid season draft pick Jacob Edwards from North Melbourne is worth giving a 2nd chance to.

I initially thought the same too, but something doesn’t add up. North have lost Goldstein & aren’t flush with other ruck options. He was also a covid-era midseason section, which doesn’t bode well.

We sure do need another mid (or two) coming through, I wouldn't be upset if we took him, looks like he'll be a player.

Just think the goalposts have changed a bit given we've had another poor finals series, and we'll be looking for players who can provide a bit of a point of difference and/or impact straight away.

Sanders might be plug & play, but not sure being the 5th or 6th guy in the midfield rotation over the next season or two will do much for us in the short term.

I don't think we'll be thinking short term, the plan surely is to find the best player long term. The hope will be to find an elite player so we don't have to bottom out over the next few years. That can be a somewhat vanilla option like Sanders, you can be a genuine midfield star without too many tricks. But I suspect the plan will be to go for someone with more upside either by a trade up or going for Caddy.

I think it's going to be a two pronged approach, i think we will draft Sanders and someone with a bit more X factor with pick 11 and continue to build our cap space. i think the plan will be to be pretty aggressive post 2024.

we weren't miles off the pace this year and could have won the flag with a better injury run, you'd expect JVR and Petty will be better, Kozzie and co will continue to develop and some tweaks to the game plan should see us be around the mark again.

If the speculation is to be believed then Sanders is going one pick before ours.

Curtin or Caddy seem to be the choices if we remain at 6.

Caddy has the x-factor but seems to go missing through the matches.  Not sure he’s a fit for us given we have medium tall forwards already.  But I’ll say, when he’s good though, he’s very good.

The additions of McAdam and Billings mean we don’t need any more medium forwards.

Im pretty sure he was out of the Hawks side before he got injured. He’s the type of player who has to kick 2 a week because he doesn’t do enough else and 2 a week is hard.

Would this work ?

WCE gives up 1 to NM

NM. Gives  2 to WCE

NM gives 3 to Dees

they all get their first choice player

hawks then bulldogs take their pick

Dees gives 6 to NM

gws , cats, essendum, adel.

Dees give 11 to WCE

syd, StK, adel.
Nth give Dee’s pick 15.

dees pick 6 goes to 3

dees 11 goes to 15

all 3 clubs get excellent first choice

melb still has 2 picks in top 15

nth has 4 not 5 in first 20 picks

WCE get 2 inside the top 12 picks

plus we might need to throw in our F2 and F3

i have NB idea but speculation

WCE have apparently made clear that they would want two single-figure swaps, and one of those would need to be 2 or 3.  So 3+9 minimum, though you'd think even that wouldn't be enough to give away Reid.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
