PREGAME: QF vs Collingwood

I thought that they (and boundary umpires) are still allowed to do so today, albeit it's been many years since I've seen it happen.

Maybe they still can. But you never see them pull out the notebook and pen, ever, in the old days they did it regularly.

That's true.  Even the central umpires are loath to report these days, preferring to wait for the video review.

They did.  Sometimes a player would be reported by more than one umpire for the same incident!

Goal Umpires were very good at Running Backwards to their position whilst still watching for any spot fires!

Too busy listening for 'snicks' ....

I just watched the replay of the KB match. It seems to me that unfortunately Cox can get Max, usually by pretty poor tactics. On the other hand, Grundy treats him with contempt - he knows just how to play him. So I think he should be picked, as a ruckman, to share with Max. Normally I like to have Tommo in the backline but if we play Max and Grundy, Max can probably drop back and be the third tall in defence,

A lot to recommend.

That’s, well, that’s just silly. This is exactly why I’m worried about the next game

To think that a video posted online for supporters has any correlation to how our boys play is pure madness if not disrespectful.

Watching us put the hammer down against Sydney last week with nothing  on the line fueling endeavour other than professionalism was akin to watching Hawthorn smashing sides for fun in the 80s versions of Escort Cup. I was always jealous of that.

I don’t agree that Disco looked “ out of touch”. In fact ,I thought he did remarkably well for a guy coming back from injury, and only in his third game.  He did look as if he might have sustained a minor injury  v. the Swans, though.

I'm totally confused. I thought the discussion was about finals games against Collingwood in 1988 and 1989. Flower's last game was in 1987. So, when was this Danny Hughes/BT game?

Round 7 1987 http://www.demonwiki.org/Round+7+1987 quote "the Collingwood full-forward lost the plot and found himself reported".

According to demonwiki there was a rematch later in the season (round 20), where Taylor was again reported. Demons won the stoush and recorded their biggest win at Victoria Park. Great days with Swooper at the helm.

That's a great call.

Assuming Quaynor goes to Koz, in addition to perhaps challenging him defensively, playing Koz out of the square also negates the offensive impact of Qualynor, who loves to intercept and bounce of half back (which is even more crucial with no Nick Daicos) and means Koz is always close to goal and a chance of scoring.

I suspect Goody actually wants koz to fly for pack marks rather than stay down. He has been doing it all season and would have stopped doing so if Goody told him to. Playing out of the square means Koz can continue to fly for pack marks and crunch the oppo defenders. Might even take a speccy for the ages too at some point!

And of course, has more forward space now minus Melksham. But I suppose that depends who we replace Jake with.

Kozzy looked great out of the square last week.

I've been hoping and waiting all season for us to play Grundy in the ruck and Max behind the ball.

Maybe we unveil it in a QF? Despite loving the percentages, Goody is the sort of coach that could wait until the QF to try this.

I'm pretty sure the AFL ap picked the exact same team.

That's a heck of a lot of quality to come back for them...unfortunately.

No Daicos

Zac "not-so-sharpe"

I think Grundy will be selected for this match.

Turner out, Tomlinson or Hibbo in.

Smith ... sub.

Weather will be a factor in selection. Dry conditions and we play Gawndy. If it's wet, I reckon we'll go smaller and may even bring in a small like Laurie to the 22 and bring in another runner to the sub role (Spargo?).

So retain Turner and have Smith up our sleeve as a back up.

It was interesting that Max noted I'm his presser today that Gawndy has often played in wet conditions. I wonder if that's the internal vibe out of the club, that those selections were a mistake.

And if I'm on the money there (which is rare), our extended bench could be huge. Is there a limit on extended benches?

Lots of great points in this thread, IMHO, this game will come down to basic pressure and physicality around the ball.

Mccrae is a smart coach and will have something up his sleeve to alter the game plan that us and Brisbane had figured out by blocking the corridor.

Collingwood don’t appreciate being bullied around the ball. I’m talking Geelong V Sydney last GF. Geelong won that game by making Sydney players think more about the Geelong player that was about to tackle them, than by what their disposal should be.

Slow the game, don’t let them dictate a fast tempo, be vicious around the ball, make our pressure rating off the scale.

If we do that we’ll win.

Instead of Bang Bang Bang!

Demons are going Win Win Win!

For Flag 14!!

Go Demons!

I think the opposite. I see Goodwin as a coach who will do all his experimenting and unexpected selections during the year so as to settle on the preferred approach well before finals. Injuries affect the availability of players, but I fully expect Goodwin to be conservative in finals and only go with what's been tried and tested already. I'd be shocked if we saw something we've never seen before.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
