Still contracted for 2025 so that is no guarantee

Two first rounders as a pre-Agent in 2024 or one as FA compensation in 2025.

If we are going for flags I'm rolling the dice.... would rather win a flag and get one less pick personally

Maybe. I wouldn’t be totally surprised. But you say that with a lot of certainty!

Unless we convince him to extend.

It’s surely extend or trade in 2024, particularly with the AFL angling to scale back FA compensation.

I see Petty as a stand-up guy though, and I think he could be convinced to stick around. Hardly a fait accompli.

Might be an enjoyable ride, with them lacking a key defender.

So if we select Watson, our small to small/med forwards will be Watson, Kossie, McAdam, Chandler, Spagonicus, ANB. All with differing rolls, of course, but that's a crowded grouping

Unless Watson has potential to eventually play midfield, I'm not sure what the strategy is.

It's usually best available at the pointy end of the dtaft, which might be him.

I'm hoping for a classy mid at 6 (7). We need to develop the next A grade mid

Surely a couple of them would finally play as small forwards should and crumb the packs and keep the ball inside 50 when it hits the deck. We’ve had a serious problem in successfully doing this for the past 2 years.

Try 5 years!

Even during 2021 we did a lot of long bombing hoping for crumbing to work, which it did with Kossie and even Spargonicus.

The connection btwn mids and forwards is the main issue imo, but that's for another thread

I honestly think the money was a huge factor in this rather than just pure go home factor, not that he'd admit it publicly,

i suspect we will be putting a lucrative extension in front of him fairly soon and if he chooses not to sign on, we'll look to trade him at the end of 2024

I also expect we'll look to extend Van Rooyen out early next year as well long term

One player that might be available at our first selection.

Now folks, that is a highlights package. If someone drafts him before us they will become my second most hated team after Collingwood.

He's a jet and I expect him to be picked by another club before us. If he slid to us then he'd be a great pickup. Him and Kozzie would cause nightmares up forward and both can take stints in the midfield for extra damage.

Until I saw that highlights package, I had been put off Watson due to his lack of height. But what I saw there was probably, imo, the most skilful player at the draft by a mile. What I especially like is that he never tries to do too much - like Reid and McKercher do - and he always looks for someone in a better position- and has the skills to get it to him. Up until today, I’ve been certain I’d take Curtin at pick 6. But now I think we’d be mad if we didn’t take Watson if he is available.

Jesus, very strong at the core. This kid will be an absolute gun.

Would go along way to solving our forward half issues.

Agree, although not as physical a player as Kozzie I actually think Watson will be a better player, if not certainly more consistent.

Kozzie,Spargo ,Chandler and now Watson ?.Must draft Snow White as well.

Why not, there are plenty on here who could be the evil stepmother

If JT thinks he is the best available and is there at our pick then why not, he seems to have all the tools to be a midfielder or forward.

His presence would put pressure on Spargo, Sparrow, ANB, Chandler and Pickett to retain their spots.

I’d have no problem with Kozzy and Watson in the ones and Chandler and Spargo pushing for spots at Casey. For the sake of 10-15 centimetres we are talking about a player that with that skill set and game sense would arguably be the number 1 pick in this draft.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

  • VOTES: Richmond

Kozzy Pickett was the man of the match last week and has a vote lead over backup ruck Max Heath who didn't play this week and 5 votes over former Saint Jack Steele. Who gets the votes in this weeks shortened match win over the Tigers? Your votes please. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
