Interesting out in J.Smith.

I wander what they want him to work on?

He has been getting through a few games now (uninjured),  the wet last week. I thought he deserved one more look at AFL level.

The VFL really won't improve bim. Will need to dominate at that level to get back in if dropped completely.

Hope they use him as a sub specialist.

Fascinating selections.

So Smith or Chandler the sub?

We seem to have gone away from the three tall forward set up, and will go with Brown and Gawn/Grundy.

Melksham is near the end, if not done, and I don't like his chances of impacting this week.

Aside from Kozzy and maybe Brown, there's not much to get excited about in the forward half. We're going to have to get a few goals out of Trac and our mids too.

With Fritsch out injured surely Smith should have kept his spot ahead of Melk. Smith played well in the Pies game, then had 2 games in the wet where he struggled with all the other forwards but kept tackling and competing in the air and on the ground. Pity he doesn’t get to play in dry conditions under the roof. Selections again puzzling.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of the forward line.

Melksham to play a defensive forward role on Wilkie?

Going in again with no recognised CHF after also losing Frisch? Why no JVR or Petty forward with Tomlinson back? The coach has lost the plot with his midget setup.

I’d say he’s going back to the 2’s to learn awareness of his opponent. The last 2 have shown him a lesson. He’s not the answer. I’ll bet my left leg we’re planning on Brown and JVR being surrounded by Pickett, Spargo, ANB and Petracca within a week or 2. Oliver being out is the headache

Terrible team IMO. Melksham does not deserve to stay in; Jordon has had many opportunities and has proved he is a plodder. I can only think Petty will go forward as otherwise the only tall is BBB  and he is not enough. But if Petty is forward who is our third tall in defence? - should have been Tomlinson who us also usually quite a precise kick.

He wasn’t playing in front. His opponent led him to the ball and took some important intercept marks from quick kicks out of stoppage.
Very slow to read the play at times.

Because he can kick straight

He can, but he’s averaging 6 kicks in 2023.

Jordan has to get 41 in the VFL to get a gig, Spargo gets in on trust. I’d prefer to see him get 20 & 2 in the VFL and then bring him in.

Woe

Jordan for Harmes

Chandler out

Lose three mediums to medium talls in Smith, Fritsch and Melk and go super small replacing them & Chandler with another small (the little one) ....

Holy Moly Batman!

these assholes i stf2g hope u like friend GIF

Petty isn’t forward because we have arguably the best defense in the AFL and Petty is an integral part of that.

You don’t break what’s working.

Melksham gets to 100 games with the club this week doesn't he?

Correct 99* not out.

Unless it is to fix something that is totally broken and is losing us games, perhaps.

Yep, our best 22 has May, Lever & Petty back, Tomlinson is a backup.

JVR should be up front instead of Melk imo, leave Petty where he is

I think we’d all be happier if JVR was in and Melksham was out. I’d say we’ll get our wish next weekend

They must be playing Spargo as the deep forward and will bomb it high to him with three defenders around him

Not sure there’s much more he can do with his limited footy iq. He’s been led to the ball and let his opponents intercept and charge out of defense this past few weeks. His lack of forward craft has been a key reason our forward line hasn’t functioned. He’s an athlete not a footballer. At 27 years old he’s yet to cement a spot at AFL level, so the writings on the wall for him. He’s been tried in basically every position on the ground at this point with no success. Definition of a list clogger unfortunately.

Disappointed not to see JVR back in the team. He wasn’t setting the world on fire, but he can provide a contest and I would’ve liked to see him and BBrown work together to split defenses apart and not allow so many easy intercepts and rebounds. I guess that’s why we’ve gone smaller though; locking it in up forward.

Don't know where the goals are going to come from! Surprised JVR not in, hopefully Smith is sub. ANB seems to be an automatic in regardless of whether he stuffs up or doesn't kick goals. If Brown doesn't kick 3 or 4 I think we could be stuffed. Maybe Petracca plays predominately as a forward. Would have thought with Fritter out Smith would've played his role, with Petty there too and Tomlinson in the back half. Melks plays his 100th for the club, but if we lose I will be so annoyed.

Another 70 inside 50s for 5 goals?

Selectors seem to be throwing darts when it comes to picking a forward line. This is the least enthused I've been about a game in a long time.

This. Subbed off against the pies with 6 touches, subbed on against the cats and got 2 - not sure how he got to the front of the queue.

Neither of those disposals were effective, one of them resulted in a turnover.

Negative 2 meters gained in approx one quarter of time on ground vs the Cats.

Obviously has some credits from the coaches viewpoint but i fear they've placed too much faith before form again here.  Same as they did vs the Cats.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
