True pressure came on and we crumbled. Is ANB fumbling the "Melbourne way?" It certainly seems to be the ANB way. ANB is now a player who doesn't really want the ball anymore. He'd rather wait till his opponent picks it up and then tackle them. His 1 wood is tackling. Forward line pressure. All very well but how about we create goals rather than stoppages. He needs to be a player in his own right, not just some bit part player deferring to the "stars" of our side. Playing a role. Bad coaching. He could be so much better. Some of these "role" players need to be given more responsibilty. You be the man. Stop relying on others.

Gawn was being monstered and no one went to assist. Stanley simply went to stop Max and didn't care about his own game.

Viney was pushed while on the ground injured. No one went to assist

Tracc was being held all night and no one tried to break his tag.

Not sure who was on Rohan but again he pops up to tear us a new one. Thommo would have been perfect.

I like Petty as a player but he was underdone, not up to the pace and comprehensively beaten

Thommo was be furious he was dropped and I agree with him.

Brayshaw the Butcher should be his new name. Has plenty of tickets on his ability. Needs to get his ego out of his game. He is not that skilled.

But the worst was the absolute butchering of the ball and trying to play dry weather football. The insane short handballs to a stationary target. Over and over again.

And Fritsch? needs to be dropped and learn how to play selfless footy again. Zero awareness of whats around him Tries to do it all himself.

Geelong defended as a group very well and schooled us. They always had a player back and ran/overlapped well.

One of Goodwins worst ever performances as a coach. Again against Scott. They clearly didn't watch last year's game nor how Port  smashed them with dare through the middle.

Kicked 33 points the last two games. WTF is that? You are paid professionals FFS

This group frustrates the hell out of me. Great performance against the Pies. And then this shiite on prime time TV.

Stunk up badly at the selection table, anomalies abound. BBB having an excellent start to the season then relegated to Casey, can't get back in despite us having  an average forward line. Tomlinson, breakout game v Collingwood... surely "no change" is the applicable team-first messaging. Petty, straight back in, despite the erstwhile practice of easing injured players back ...through Casey. Can't take any of it too seriously when punters preside over selections. Demons, gamble responsibly.

On another note twice last night Brayshaw kicked the ball to a player calling for it (just making position is calling for it) and both times the players calling for it gave up on the play

The first time Rivers should have shielded the ball from the Cats player coming in from the side but didn't.  A soft effort and he didn't want contact

The 2nd time the ball was directed at Petty late in the game and Petty did not even make a contest.  Completely gave up on the play.  Super-soft effort

Yet people here want to blame Brayshaw?  Astonishing lack of knowledge

The Rivers one was Rivers' fault as was the Petty one (Petty's fault) ... as for Smith,  how does a player miss from 10 metres out directly in front?  That was pathetic and is a far bigger issue

Like T-Mac when he played back, those disposals ending up with the opposition instances are exaggerated.  Then group-think takes over and before you know it, players are labelled as turnover machines

And no, I'm not a Brayshaw super-fan.  Just a fair-minded individual

So go and watch the game again and point out the 2 x 40 metre spearing passes to the opposition.

No they don't that's the problem, ball movement is to slow for that.

Having  50% more handballs than Geelong in wet conditions lost us the match. At the longest and narrowest ground in the AFL it should have been about gaining maximum territory at speed instead of passing the ball around in circles in tight slippery conditions. Most times we went forward we came across a well set defence and difficult to penetrate due to slow ball movement. Very poor tactical coaching to allow this to happen. Geelong at the start of last quarter went all in pushing the ball forward which gave them momentum from the centre. And yet again we lost the centre clearance battle badly. A couple of frees to us there made it look slightly better than it actually was.

Perhaps, what could have worked, is putting a key tall on Stewart, with a lot of defensive experience, who could take some marks and stop Stewart freely intercepting the ball..... if only we had such a player available...

That’s exactly why I thought they bought him into the side. Stewart killed us!

I'm just going to go back and read this thread however....

Has anyone noticed that a few of our players look overweight or carrying extra pudding? A couple of key ones too, one very important crumbing forward....

Why after so many years we continue to keep bombing it into 50? It just seems every bloody game we do this and sometimes we get lucky, but when our crumbing forwards are sooo badly out of form, we have nothing.

Goodwin needs to understand and adapt in game. Cats are known for their little chip mark game and Scott knows we play a zone, so they just pick it apart and chip through it.

I was never a fan of the Gawn and Grundy experiment, they take away from each other not complement it. Not a fan and it isn't working to the best of its ability.

You cant have a forward line with a very raw and green Smith and JVR to kick your goals.

A positive, I'm liking Bayleys second and third efforts down forward, definitely noticed a big shift in his hunger recently.

Anyway, get sick of saying and hearing the same old after a loss. Bombing long into F50 kills me.

Now our forwards are like statues

Back in 2021 Brown led up and nearly always played in front.  T-Mac the same and he constantly created separation

It’s interesting..the people I was with (who are not Melb supporters) but are avid football followers made the comment…”it’s obvious Melb are in a heavy training load as they have nothing left in the last qrt “. The match against the Pies reflected that as well by both teams . If you look at our last 2 or 3 seasons this time of the year is where we always struggle.  There are 9 games left so let’s temper our dire expectations slightly …

Well spotted Febes, I also really liked Fritta's defensive efforts and thought he tackled hard. Unlucky with the sling. 

The chip mark games run us ragged, would kill for a little more time in possession but instead we're just doing a lot of running without the ball late in games and getting gassed. 

Minor comment not related to the result, this is the 2nd time we've played Geelong in Retro Round and they've worn a special kit,  are we ever going to bust out an old-school retro kit ?

I hope this is the case. We just came of the bye though so not sure

They have no clue how to play on quickly Gus had the pill Rivers was free Gus took to long to pass it got intercepted, players are lead way to early for the kicker to move back and pass it, players still playing 21 game plan, forward line never moves around to open up a lead, players all flying in packs, and the classic kicking it to Kossie who's a small player way above his head against his opposition player who's about 8 inches taller gee that worked well.

The major problem is the forward line an example is in the last quarter the cats players made their forward players run to where they were kicking it to them on a lead we just bring our opponent along with them, JVR needs to learn forward craft "I would get him to talk to Nick Riewoldt on how he played and his thinking" he is not a pack mark player yet, another year doing the same thing to many player playing a defensive role, time to flick the switch.

last night the deference was a team playing for their season and another that is preparing to play their best footy in the back half of the year (knock knock Simon it is the [censored] back half of the year)
