Yes they did delay from normal timing. Monday squads are usually announced Thursday or Friday evening and finalised Saturday 5pm. The most recent example Easter Monday:

https://www.geelongcats.com.au/news/1300645/afl-squad-selection-easter-monday

Ditto the ANZAC games.

What does it matter when they announce the teams? I think we more or less knew the makeup up the Melbourne side in advance once Clarrie was declared unfit and then the names in the Casey team just about confirmed it.

Not sure whether Collingwood was playing ducks and drakes with their supposed flu and covid victims but the fact is that they go in today without De Goey, Sidebottom, Elliott and McStay, with Patrick Lipinski in after a long lay off after shoulder surgery, and Josh Daicos, McCreery and Hoskin-Elliott all named despite being under fitness clouds.

We should be up to the task, particularly if we can kick accurately and exert some early pressure on them. They’ve had more than a month of easy games and look ready to slip up just as we were in 2021 when we were the hot favourite and they were the underdogs.

You might well be right that it was delayed because of covid etc.

The question I have is, is that ok?

Why should the pies not have to announce their team Friday, even if there are some queries about individual players?

I mean it happens all the time players get selected even though there is some injury cloud.

More AFL  kowtowing to the pies?

Yes, it is ok.

I have no doubt the AFL asked MFC if we were ok to delay squad/team announcements.  Of course we would say yes as it might be us on another occasion.

No AFL kowtowing to the Pies that I can see.

Obviously if they had suspected flu or Covid running through the club they would have wanted extra time to assess and maybe even wait on respiratory test results before naming the side. I don’t have any issues with that. It’s better than naming a side and then making 8 changes two days later, or letting infectious players take the field and passing it onto our guys!

It's a big one, doesn't matter which way you want to slice it. If we look bog against 3 quality teams this year then that's not going to be a good thing. But the season isn't buried if we do lose it.

We need a strong performance though.

There's a lot more to be gained by a win than there is to be lost by a loss.

Right now we are a team in the mix for the top 4 but yet to really hit impressive form overall.

Win today and we have a win against the form team of the competition and become a top 4 team most likely to contend.

Lose today and we are still a team in the mix for the top 4, with a lot working well but which needs to get its ducks in a row throughout the second half of the season.

Think Fritta has to lead the forward line today, JVR too young, Gawn & Grundy although we hope for some goals they're rucks first and foremost. Strong performance from Fritta will go a long way towards winning, he has the forward craft and the smarts.

'Medicinal' spliff today Steve ?

‘High’ probability.

Need to boss the midfield and put a few Pies on their bums. Happy to use the boundary a bit more today to protect the corridor and hopefully expose them without Sidegolo.

We can all think what we want to think. It will have no impact on what actually happens.

Blah blah blah, we need to win this and you know it.

Really?

Ok, you've got me.

It is a must win game. You know it. I know it. Only fools pretend otherwise. Sheeple.

I will be furious if we lose. Inconsolable.

Doubly so because I shelled out big bucks for a reserved seat to get a guaranteed Grand final ticket.

Lose and the season is over.

Can’t make top 4.

Can't beat a team decimated by Covid and the worst flu known to man. Can't win a flag.

Today is basically an elimination final.

THAT'S HOW BIG TODAY IS!!!

Stop the season I want to get off.

Now you're talking. Enough of your stats, game theories, loading etc... For me this game's about the vibe, the emotion, the raw energy. I hate losing to the Pies, I really hate it and we thus we need to win.

Surely / hopefully the pre game learnings out way the post game. We know how Collingwood intend to play, what have we learnt?

No excuses today, none.

If not today, when?

Maybe a bit more Zeno than Descartes.  Control the controlables.

Don't forget to bring your musician ear plugs or at very least noise cancelling earphones today to drown out the scumbag filth merchants whenever they scare.

No old55, you’re just projecting what you think on me. 😆

Imagine the supporters response if Goodwin (or any coach) held a presser in such an emotional manner. It would be hilarious...and a damned indictment, and they'd suggest he wasn't fit for the job to make useful decisions on behalf of the club....

On reflection, I think there is something in that for all of us 😆🤷‍♂️

How good would it be if they picked a supporter to do the post match press conference each week?

Would pay good money to watch a Carlton fan do a presser right now 😂

Irrespective of what win or loss for the season means, would be great to beat the blxxdy Pies!

The greater the margin the better!!

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
