Huh? Yeah, because if the Suns and Giants has thought us anything itโ€™s that the AFL loves to backflip on new sides. They announced it, itโ€™s happening, no matter how mean spirited you continue to be about it.

I'm not expecting him to take contested marks, I'm expecting him to compete with the best of his ability. He's 6 foot and had a decent leap in his early days, now he can't get off the ground or put his body on the line. Langdon is listed as a cm shorter and isn't a natural at marking contests at all but will often get a fist in. Aerial ability for a winger is a very handy attribute to be good in, or at least not bad in. Hunter is trending toward the bad when it comes to providing some defensive aerial help.

I never professed to be a fitness expert but I thought it's pretty common knowledge that there's a balance when it comes to maximising endurance without sacrificing speed and power. The fitness staff tailor training and gym loads to not over do players.

Hunter is playing high TOG% which is good for rotations but in combination with what I suspect was a far bigger preseason for him this year than his recent ones at the Dogs is it unreasonable to think he might be far more fatigued in his current role than how he was asked to play the wing at the Dogs? Just being on the MCG compared to Marvel alone would require a lot more kms and more so in the way we get our wings to drop right back compared to the Dogs aggressive up the ground zone.

Someone said he might not be fit enough. From watching the games I said fitness isn't the issue as he won't stop going up and back, but he lacks the pace or confidence to get the ball on the run and keep it moving in the way Langdon does. I don't have to be a fitness expert to see that, it's clear as day from watching it out on the ground. Whether that's a training thing or just the fact that he isn't Langdon (no one else really is) I don't know.

Salem is very strong in 1 on 1 marking contests for his size.ย

Overrated because he came from another club? Perhaps the opposite is more accurate. Some strange animosity towards him on this site. Regularly plays well.

No Overrated because people seem to think players from other clubs are better than what had & Iโ€™m sorry that l would prefer Harmes Jordon, Laurie & Salem when fit

I think that's exactly right. As a result, Petty aint going back even if he has a stinker or two. The game is faster now that teams have adapted to the Stand rule.ย

I think itโ€™s more about teams changing to nullify our defensive dominance from 2021.ย

Yeah sorry Iโ€™m not part of the MFC fitness team, what a surprisingly revelationย

in a desperate desire to get around from the yes-he-is-no-he's-not with hunter, pre-empting the 'what are they saying at brougham place' but this stuck out to me on bigfooty:

Given our extensive injury situation, and the fact that Melbourne are probably a class above us anyway, I won't be shattered with a loss. But if we play the game with a defensive, just minimise the damage, don't even try to score plan, like we did last year I'll spew up.
I want see us go into the game with a plan to attack and win. If it does't come off, so be it, but don't concede defeat before the game even starts, like last year.

ย

i think we'll get a very different side to last year

given georgiadies and marshall are definitely out, and dixon possibly too, they might have to bring in hayes to partner lycett and go with finlayson as a forward - funnily enough, i think he's actually their most damaging ruckman, just by dint of his aerobic capacity as much as anything

rozzee, butters, jhf, with boak as the old stager is a pretty handy inside midfield combo, with a fair few rotations that they push through too

it'll be interesting to see if we go with the high level of different options at stoppages or the tried-and-true trio of oliver, petracca, and viney

i suppose trac depends on how his ankle recovers

if petty misses, sideshow bald or plugger mac in to replace?

Do you mean the free kick in front of goal where he was pushed into the legs of a player??

And weโ€™re dropping Fritsch again are we?

Whatโ€™s the weather like outside?

Iโ€™d have to watch the replay but I saw a guy sprawling in to the ground with minimal resistance.ย

I would love to drop Fritsch again. His defensive efforts were once again abysmal and the way he goes at the ball in ground contests with one arm just wafting is so far below the team standard itโ€™s not funny.ย

He shouldโ€™ve had 3 shots at goal in the first quarter from very good forward play but he fluffed the marks and then was largely invisible until junk time. He sure did look great when the game was well and truly over though.

I challenge anyone who doesnโ€™t agree with me about how poor Frisch is defensively to get a good seat with a nice aerial view and watch how often his man is the pressure release valve for the other side.

And now Iโ€™ll get accused of hating him or some such nonsense. Nothing could be further from the truth. Heโ€™s an exceptionally talented forward and I love his skills and strong aerial work. But if he could just get up to AFL standard when the ball is on the deck or with his defending he could go from a very good to a great player.ย

I doubt Brown comes if Petty misses. Goodwin said at his presser during the week that he still needs to work on some things, I assume that to be in the VFL. So either TMac or Smith get that role. Personally would like to see Smith in. If Petracca is rested, then JJ is in the 22. The only changes for mine.

And then you get rebounded on. Our biggest weakness and vulnerability is ground ball.

There's a reason we are going smaller ourselves at the back. We want to be able to rebound off teams ourselves.

The modern game with slingshot turnover footy is not at all conducive to having tall forwards all over the shop. If they don't get it done in the air, it's usually a rebound.

So thatโ€™s why you go tall and clunk em. It can go both ways.ย

We do not ask Spargo to ruck for obvious reasons. Frittaโ€™s defensive work is not as bad as you say IMO.ย

Was Tom Jonas cited for his bump on Zurhaar in this footage? Looked careless, high contact and high impact if Zurhaar has indeed got a fractured cheekbone.

Edit: not that I particularly want him cited, but feel less has drawn the ire of the MRO.

Absolutely should have been cited for this. It was a bump which caused a serious injury. The MRO is a complete joke. And Jonas has previous form.

Tom Jonas should have been cited years ago for fathering Kevin, Joe and Nick.

So our forward set up has nothing to do with how many goals we kick?ย

That's not what I wrote and you know it.

Our forward line is still a big work in progress. None of our key forwards have cemented a place. We are yet to play 5 of the top 8, having only won against the Dogs in R1. Beating up on cellar dwellers is fools gold

I want to see how we perform against these top 8 sides before being pleased with our forward set up

hard disagree with that bolded section

ourย keyย forwards - as opposed to, in some cases,ย tallย forwards - are locked in place at this point in time:

  • fritsch - he's our primary key forward
  • gawn - when he rotates forward he's vital with his ability to mark / halve the contest
    • grundy - nowhere near as dangerous, but can rotate forward
  • van rooyen - we go to him, we get a goal on more than 50% of the occasions
  • pickett - he's our best pressure player i50
  • chandler - he's our second best pressure player i50
  • spargo - he's our best user going i50

that's sixย keyย forwards; add in petty as anotherย tallย option and we're a) scoring more than any other team and b) spreading our goal kicking beautifully

I absolutely agree itโ€™s not the finished product and we do need to show it against a top 8 team but at the same time I donโ€™t think a key forward dominating is as important as it use to be. ย  The fact we have so many options makes us very dangerousย

Thought I'd get in early. If Petracca is injured and we can't win without him, we're not genuine premiership contenders ๐Ÿซ

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the teamโ€™s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourneโ€™s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season.ย There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight.ย Since that game, the Demonsโ€™ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the โ€˜G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sundayโ€™s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
