I never professed to be a fitness expert but I thought it's pretty common knowledge that there's a balance when it comes to maximising endurance without sacrificing speed and power. The fitness staff tailor training and gym loads to not over do players.

Hunter is playing high TOG% which is good for rotations but in combination with what I suspect was a far bigger preseason for him this year than his recent ones at the Dogs is it unreasonable to think he might be far more fatigued in his current role than how he was asked to play the wing at the Dogs? Just being on the MCG compared to Marvel alone would require a lot more kms and more so in the way we get our wings to drop right back compared to the Dogs aggressive up the ground zone.

Someone said he might not be fit enough. From watching the games I said fitness isn't the issue as he won't stop going up and back, but he lacks the pace or confidence to get the ball on the run and keep it moving in the way Langdon does. I don't have to be a fitness expert to see that, it's clear as day from watching it out on the ground. Whether that's a training thing or just the fact that he isn't Langdon (no one else really is) I don't know.

 

Salem is very strong in 1 on 1 marking contests for his size.

given georgiadies and marshall are definitely out, and dixon possibly too, they might have to bring in hayes to partner lycett and go with finlayson as a forward - funnily enough, i think he's actually their most damaging ruckman, just by dint of his aerobic capacity as much as anything

rozzee, butters, jhf, with boak as the old stager is a pretty handy inside midfield combo, with a fair few rotations that they push through too

it'll be interesting to see if we go with the high level of different options at stoppages or the tried-and-true trio of oliver, petracca, and viney

i suppose trac depends on how his ankle recovers

if petty misses, sideshow bald or plugger mac in to replace?

I’d have to watch the replay but I saw a guy sprawling in to the ground with minimal resistance. 

I would love to drop Fritsch again. His defensive efforts were once again abysmal and the way he goes at the ball in ground contests with one arm just wafting is so far below the team standard it’s not funny. 

He should’ve had 3 shots at goal in the first quarter from very good forward play but he fluffed the marks and then was largely invisible until junk time. He sure did look great when the game was well and truly over though.

I challenge anyone who doesn’t agree with me about how poor Frisch is defensively to get a good seat with a nice aerial view and watch how often his man is the pressure release valve for the other side.

And now I’ll get accused of hating him or some such nonsense. Nothing could be further from the truth. He’s an exceptionally talented forward and I love his skills and strong aerial work. But if he could just get up to AFL standard when the ball is on the deck or with his defending he could go from a very good to a great player.

I doubt Brown comes if Petty misses. Goodwin said at his presser during the week that he still needs to work on some things, I assume that to be in the VFL. So either TMac or Smith get that role. Personally would like to see Smith in. If Petracca is rested, then JJ is in the 22. The only changes for mine.

There's a reason we are going smaller ourselves at the back. We want to be able to rebound off teams ourselves.

The modern game with slingshot turnover footy is not at all conducive to having tall forwards all over the shop. If they don't get it done in the air, it's usually a rebound.

So that’s why you go tall and clunk em. It can go both ways.

Absolutely should have been cited for this. It was a bump which caused a serious injury. The MRO is a complete joke. And Jonas has previous form.

hard disagree with that bolded section

our key forwards - as opposed to, in some cases, tall forwards - are locked in place at this point in time:

• fritsch - he's our primary key forward
• gawn - when he rotates forward he's vital with his ability to mark / halve the contest
  • grundy - nowhere near as dangerous, but can rotate forward
• van rooyen - we go to him, we get a goal on more than 50% of the occasions
• pickett - he's our best pressure player i50
• chandler - he's our second best pressure player i50
• spargo - he's our best user going i50

that's six key forwards; add in petty as another tall option and we're a) scoring more than any other team and b) spreading our goal kicking beautifully

I absolutely agree it’s not the finished product and we do need to show it against a top 8 team but at the same time I don’t think a key forward dominating is as important as it use to be.   The fact we have so many options makes us very dangerous
