    Ben Hart was only 17 when he debuted with Adelaide, so I don't reckon he could have been on our list before that.

    well donny played for wa rep side and stuart played for tassy including a win over the vfl. not too shoddy.

    Love the topic Monbon but:

    Scott Thompson was far better than a bench player in this side.

    I think Spalding was a better CFH than Hogan and if memory serves me correctly, Earl played in 2 Grand Final sides, including a premership with Carlton in a dominant year.  I like Jessy, but I don't think he's delivered on his potential.  Conversely, while he was arguably a less talented player, Earl squeezed every bit of potential out of himself and was a valuable contributor and performer for two teams right up there at the pointy end of team performance.

    Again nothing particularly against Walsh, but Nathan Bassett was a better player.

    Always loved Martin Pike.  What a beast.  And how many players around in the modern era could claim to have played in 3 different teams and 4 premerships.  If the chips had fallen differently, he could possibly have played in Premierships with the MFC in the early/mid 90s, which was bursting with talent, but just couldn't put it together consistently enough and/or keep it all out on the park long enough to capitalize on it.

     

    Regardless of them being amoung the elites or not, I'm actually generally really enjoying see some of our recient departures like Sauce, Hunt and Jessie in particular get a game and oppertunity to perform at the top level.  I've no real love or hate for Jackson and who knows if he'll be another that got away, but I'll never view him with the same kind of distain as that rat $cully, who despite all the tickets he had on himself, never really justified the huge price he accepted from that scum Sheedy and the goons at the AFL.

    Surely Brad Miller deserves a mention: far more intimidating than Hogan at CHF and with a rather nice ex wife as well!

    Pikey actually played for four clubs - us, Fitzroy (swapped for Martin Seecamp), North and Brisbane.

    Just on Nathan Bassett - very good player, but didn't play a senior game with us due to injuries.

    Agree with you on most points. I had to fit Spalding in, but methinks maybe you underestimate Hogan's performances - most in an ordinary side:

    Set to debut in Round 1, 2014, Hogan's senior career was stalled when it was revealed that he had stress fractures in his back shortly before the season started. Despite initial predictions that he would only miss a few weeks he was placed on the long-term injury list on May 1.

    He returned for one Casey game late in the year but did not make his senior debut until Round 1 the following year. Hogan effortlessly stepped into senior football the next year, kicking 44 goals despite Melbourne having another low scoring season and winning the Rising Star award.

    In an improved side in 2016 he produced close to the same numbers as his debut year, but struggled late in the season after a fast start. He then had a troubled 2017, suspended early in the season before losing his father to cancer and then being diagnosed with the disease himself and undergoing surgery. He returned later in the year, suffered a broken collarbone, returned again then injured his hamstring in the last game of the year.

    He had a more successful 2018 campaign, playing 20 games and kicking 47 goals before a foot injury ended his season after Round 21.  He kicked 152 goals in 71 games and as you read above, severe injuries hardly helped his cause.

    With regard to Thompson, I'll play the 'just because they're named on the bench doesn't mean they won't start in the opening 18'...Have a look at the side as published yesterday...Chandler on the Half Back Flank...

    Definitely Nathan Bassett. I don't even think Hart was drafted, he was just added to Adelaide's list in their early days.

    Nobody loved G.Baker as a player more than yours Truly. Jolly was forced to play number 2 to Jeff White, went to Sydney, Collingwood, played in premiership sides for both and played 237 games all up. 

    Also, Gary Baker only played 5 games for Sydney when he left after 1981 - his knees were rooned, as they say. I recall some of his best work was his marking ability, especially when he played Back against the resting opposition Ruck Forward.

    I’ve seen no mention of Ricky Petterd! I remember him almost winning a game for us against Collingwood in the dark old days. He almost took a mark in front of goal in the last seconds of the game but was blinded by the sun and the ball dropped out of his hands: we were just a couple of points down at the time. I’m not certain but I seem to remember him banging the ground with his fists in utter frustration afterwards.

    Also famous for having his life saved by doctors at the ground after suffering a collapsed lung during a game. If I remember correctly the doctors took a bit of a gamble and punctured his lung with a sharp instrument enabling it to re inflate*.

    Ended up playing a few games with Richmond.

     

    *Apparently the doctors were nervous wrecks afterwards!

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

      The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder.       What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
