8–13 v blues … blues were horrible , Dees were less horrible (v6-8)

8-18 v pies … Dees dominated and should have won by 6+ goals yet won by 4 points (v9-8)

8-15 v cats … Dees fell away to cats pressure (v11–12)

5-15 v Giants … Dees had 73 inside 50s and lost by 2 points (v7-5)

29-61 over 4 weeks. Poor.  Very poor.  Goalkicking is a physical and mental exercise.  It’s also how the entries into 50 are created.  Dumb kicks to packs are easily defended.  And stupid videos of players kicking ridiculous banana kicks doesn’t help supporters frustrated by their inability to kick goals from 25-30 metres out.

Our inaccuracy / inability to kick vital goals has realistically already cost us any thoughts of top 2 and may well cost us top 4 thus any realistic thought of a premiership.
Surely kicking is such a fundamental skill in Australian football that we cannot continue to recruit or carry players that cannot kick straight and hit a target or a goal.   Unlike Rugby where there are few kicks, or American “Football”  where it seems only one guy kicks regularly all our players must kick accurately.
This is a massive challenge for all our players, and coaches.  ARE THEY UP TO THE CHALLENGE ?

According to

we currently lead the league in goal kicking accuracy after three rounds. It felt like we missed so many easy set shots last year, shooting ourselves in the foot. It’s fantastic to see this has turned around!

Just opened this thread for the first time, I assume things are still going this well!

disregarding total misses which are bad in itself we are the only side with more behinds than goals and by an incredible differential.

That is so horrifying that heads have to roll. The Eagles just suffered the 4th biggest loss in AFL history, and they’ve still scored more goals than us over the last 6 weeks.

Please let the media come after us hard over this. That is pathetic.

Should have won the game today by 6+ goals on expected score. This will, or might have already cost us a top 4 spot!

They need to get their act together it’s truly swung too far the other way in comparison to early in the season.

Could someone gather it and post it all here (un-paywalled), please?

p.s. JVR's distant/angled, and gather/blind-turn VFL goals today...

It’s actually 29-61 and 24 no score

that 29/114 = 25.4%  … that’s abysmal

lucky to get home for wins v blues and pies given we Dominated both games

Last 4 weeks

8–13 v blues … blues were horrible , Dees were less horrible (v6-8)

8-18 v pies … Dees dominated and should have won by 6+ goals yet won by 4 points (v9-8)

8-15 v cats … Dees fell away to cats pressure (v11–12)

5-15 v Giants … Dees had 73 inside 50s and lost by 2 points (v7-5)

Our accuracy at the start of the season was unsustainable. And there was a game we were lucky to win this year against Richmond where we shot the lights out while Richmond fell apart in the last quarter.

I'd like to think this 5 week patch is also a compete outlier and our woes will turn around shortly. There's going to be a game soon where we'll be a tidy 11.2.68 at half time.

GWS have been lucky. In 3 of their wins this year they have been outscored by the opposition which suggests to me that their record of 7-8 is a little flattering.

The figures I posted exclude rushed behinds, so it's purely shots at goal.

JVR is reasonably accurate and Jefferson is super accurate.   Jefferson's body is filling out and often kicks 3 or 4 goals at casey when he is the main man (no brown and no TMac).  He also has a great pair of hands and is around the 200cm mark.   I think they might both be in the side before the year is out.

I know some people dislike the idea of expected scores, however...

@ crow_data_sci over on Twitter has posted the raw data from his updated Expected Score model, including roughly 27,000 shots at goal since the beginning of 2021. If anyone is interested in downloading the raw csv file, I have included his tweet at the bottom of this post.

This is a better way to look at goal accuracy as it takes into account the estimated difficulty of the shot. The expected score for a particular shot takes into account distance to goal, angle and context (set shot, handball receive, hard ball get, etc). It's only a model and won't be perfect (e.g. it doesn't take into account weather conditions or actual pressure on the player) but it's better than raw accuracy.

In the following tables I have looked at average points scored per shot (raw measure of accuracy), average expected score (difficulty), and the difference (improved measure of accuracy), sorted by the difference.

While Petracca is comfortable the least accurate player this season for players with 30+ shots, the difficulty of his shots (average expected score) is third hardest (similar to Stringer, Rachele, Martin and Papley). He's still the second least accurate player taking into account difficulty ahead of Jade Gresham, but it does add context to his accuracy.

I have included tables for the following:

  • Melbourne players this season;
  • Melbourne overall by round, including the opposition's difference between actual and expected score;
  • Melbourne players since the beginning of 2021; and
  • All players this season.

We have been by far the most inaccurate side in the league. We need to weed out the repeat offenders and target them on their technique and footy IQ.

Wonder if it’s still the least of Goodwins worries

has cost 2 games now - arguably 3 with port

good kicking is good footy

good kicking and kicking goals is core business for a professional team

fix it pronto

i remember as a junior golfer spending hours and hours and hours on the short game - putting especially but chipping in particular

not saying they don’t practice but they need to get stone cold on this. Like Cameron smith on the greens in round 4 at St. Andrews last year. Stone cold killa

Not sure this is what Goody ever said. Happy for you to cite your source though.

He said forward connection at the time was the least of our worries.

And frankly, forward connection is not our issue at the moment, although we could always do better at everything.

We are generating enough shots on goal, we are not converting them.

19 scoring shots - and a nice little regression back to the mean. 63.15% and 3(?) posters

  • POSTGAME: Hawthorn

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
