Once the Hawks started to become a force in the 70s - 80s, and the Dees spent 24 years without finals.

In the desire to display all the collected anti-Hawthorn sentiment over decades, this article whooshed over everyone's heads.

It's not about Hawthorn. That just happened to be the team the kid supports. It could be North, Essendon, St Kilda or others. It was Melbourne not that long ago.

It's about kids growing up never having seen their team win, the ties that bind them to the team they grew up with and their parents supported, whether they'll want to change teams in adversity, and whether they'll still want to go the the football next week ... and the next week ... and the week after. Or maybe even lose interest in football all together. It's the universal dilemma for parents whose team isn't doing well.

It could happen to anyone. It happened to my own kids for over 30 years (but they stuck with the Demons).

Totally get your point, Mauriesy. But that doesn’t apply to Hawks supporters. Not yet, anyways. Not when your most recent flag was only eight years ago, and moreover, that was the third in as many years. 

My other immediate thought on this article was that it was more than a little rich for a Hawthorn supporter to ‘take the high ground’ on sticking fat with an under-performing side.

Their adult-supporter base was built on late 80s/90s success !

The dad needs to tell his son what other clubs, eg. us, went through to put the present-day woes into context.

And also they haven’t hit rock bottom yet , they haven’t been continually thrashed by +100 point margins , or stuffed up consecutive list rebuild or the countless other sources of football supporting misery and embarrassment over decades that most long suffering football supporters (not just melb) have had to endure … it’s just that being in the bottom 4 , let alone winning the spoon is so foreign a concept for the hawks that they might assume they’ve now got it tough, and would struggle to convince their younger supporters to stick fat with them.

Correct. The dad is whingeing. As football supporters it is our duty to conflate this single supporter with the entire entitled club and wish them ill will. FOAD Hawks!

I think in the article he did. But an 8-year-old doesn't have a concept or a time frame from before he was born. He just sees the present day as the only reality.

I saw 6 Melbourne premierships up to the time I was 13. Do you think my kids gave a toss about that when they just saw us down the bottom of the ladder every week?

Sustained success brings with it expectation and arrogance. And I hate nasty supporters,  you know, the group of ugly blokes who take pleasure in abuse and insults when the team is getting belted. All clubs have them, but whose worst ? It depends on personal experience. I have vivid and upsetting memories of the abuse suffered at Waverley after the Stynes/Buckenara episode.  On another level I hated the arrogance of Jeff Kennett and his criticism and gratuitous advice to other clubs. Generally, I have found most Hawks fans pretty meek and mild. The more vicious were Bomber supporters, Collingwood and Blues supporters. And I must admit to some nasty run-ins with Crows supporters, the closest I have come to inflicting or receiving physical harm. The Cats are not vicious but they have fallen into the arrogance camp. 

So my attitude is to enjoy winning but remain humble. Enjoy the success but remember that failure is always lurking in the shadows. Be loud and proud when we are winning but never, arrogant, mean or insulting. Because the Mums and the Kids deserve better. 

Look, it’s easy to be bitter and cynical about Hawthorn supporters…

but who knew it would also be so much fun!

How about offering North and Hawks members a free entry with their kids for a game. Give them a scarf.

The publicity will be enormous given the over reaction that will occur in some areas.

Dare we do the same offer for Essendon supporters
