I think that Kade and Toby were competing for the same role and was happy for Toby to seek more game time at GWS. Whereas Kade Chandler has been a real eye opener this season super fit, hard working and elite pressure and disposal he has really added to the teams skill set and another avenue to goal. I was a bit surprised at just how good he was on Sunday against the Swans. Let’s all hope that he can maintain this type of form.!!!

Melbourne small forward Kade Chandler’s increased senior opportunities this year are set to convince him to commit his future to the red and blue, according to sources familiar with the situation.

.........Chandler’s strong start to the season, on top of the opposition interest in him, means he is poised for another multi-year contract, although any potential deal may not be locked in until closer to mid-year.

Always good to see low profile players rewarded after several years of development and hard work. His form this year warrants a new and improved contract.

Absolutely rapt for Chin again tonight.

Was bloody excellent.

The boy from the bush just keeps producing the goods.

Skills tenacity and poise under pressure in front of goal.

Thought he made a very valuable contribution tonight and kicked goals when we needed them most pegging back the Tigers lead in the 2nd and third quarters and linked up brilliantly around the ground.

He's definitely earnt his place in the best 22 so far this season.

Get where you are comming from in part.

I'm not so much one for chipping Goody and the selection pannel for their mantra of maintaining stability within the senior side, but it also did feel a bit at times last season that we perhaps could have used our opportunities to rotate more player's through the senior side at times.

I'd agree though, that during our mid season slump in particular our depth was tested and strained by having a number of players out at once, like Gawn, Jackson, May, T Mac and perhaps Viney/Trac?/Oliver miss over a period of a month or so, which I think really hurt in retrospect.

I'm also glad we didn't throw in JvR into the finals pressure cooker in desperation.

Don't think our Casey Premiership counts for nothing in terms of depth though.

If you read some of the recient comments from Alan Richardson, I think there's a bit of an admission that perhaps the team and coaching pannel went a bit too conservative and defensive in the back half of last year and perhaps weren't will to take risks that could have created better energy in the second half of games etc.  I think the team selection aspect could be part of that conversation.

Surely Dunstan must be a chance next week if we are thinking of dropping Chandler ? ( who I really like for all the reasons above)

Thought his game was outstanding last night. 4 quarter workrate, excellent pressure, 92% eff, 3 goals. Our best small forward on the night.

IMO has contributed more than Kossie so far this season.

Kozzie round one was amazing. Also Chandler allows Kozzie to get up the ground more and give us pace around the footy. Comparing and contrasting the pair isn’t helpful IMO.

Kossi has a good game followed by some average ones.  He is not consistent imo. Since round 1 he has been average not helped of course by being suspended for two games. We will need Chandler more than ever if Kossi bolts at the end of this season.

Nice attempt at sarcasm David 🤣.

But if you're serious, I think you've been watching different games to the rest of us!

Chandler also provides a second dynamic small forward option that the opposition will struggle to contain both him and Kossie.  I'd suspect that Kossie usually gets the best small defender, but that may change and Kossie will have a day out.

Yeah, sure no worries there David 😉

You are right in a sense.  I haven't been keeping much of an eye on Casey, but I can assure you that there is Buckley's chance Kade will loose his spot to Dunstan even if Dunstan might get 100 possessions.

Kade is our second highest goal kicker this season, plays with great pressure, intensity and team first attitude and yet he's at risk of loosing his spot in the side to anyone - yeah sure.

Maybe Clayton Oliver or Jack Viney might get ommited for Luke Dunstan since they play his position? 🤔

Sparrow had a good game which was timely for him, Dunstan is banging the door down and deserves reward. Bare my ar$e in Bourke street though at the idea of Chandler getting dropped. Much more interesting is what happens to Spargo? He might be the Jayden Hunt of the season.

Spargo is going nowhere. He’s our best pressure forward by a mile according to all the champion data stats and kicked 6 goals in 4 games prior to his concussion. We can play the 3 smalls as one will push up the ground, it worked prior to last week. Laurie would probably make way for him and potentially could be a sub to get him back into the team

No why he is still at the Club and Toby is not.

Most would have read the comment and assumed it was draft related but that does make more sense.

I think Kade certainly makes the grade - and he reminds me of my 7 and 8 year old self admiring Ricky Jackson...

I think he's teaching the coaches and us the value in giving a player enough games to get their confidence up enough to overcome the yips so they can stop thinking every shot on goal could kill their career. He was still looking dodgy round one shooting for goal now he's over it and is starting to kick those across the body snaps that ever other player in the team misses except for Kossie and Fritsch. Plus his small forward defensive pressure is right up there with the best. His physicality leaves Bedford in his ashes.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
