    What is the situation with salaries in the AFLW now? Is it possible that Fremantle, with a list that didn't make finals this year (albeit with heavy injuries), is in a position to offer Paxy significantly more money? 

    It's great that we kept this list together to win a premiership, but maybe some of these players, particularly the older ones, now start thinking about their personal livelihoods.

    And if our list does get attacked, clearly we are going to prioritise retaining players such as Hore, Harris, Hanks and Purcell who have got 8 - 10 years of football left, over 34/35 year olds.

    when you said you used to be a broad, I thought you meant you used to travel overseas a lot

    You're absolutely right re: pay, especially with more teams to throw money around. Detail in here about where it stood for S7, which was a one-season extension. This is to be re-negotiated for 2023:

    Harris came to Melbourne on the base wage scale.  She didn't care how much she was being paid, she just wanted to play football.  I do think she deserves to be on a higher tier than that, though!

    Yeah absolutely, she's be unfairly malligned in the media. My understanding was that the "numbers" thrown around for her at Carlton were actually what she was discussing for her multiple off-field roles.

    Yep it's why I struggle to begrudge anyone leaving, especially those later in their careers who have sacrificed a lot of earning over the last six years. At some point, you don't have to be particularly money-focused to need to make some tough decisions to look after your future.

    Having said that, I think our club is among the best placed in the league to retain players. They've shown it time and time again through expansion. We've lost players here and there, but nowhere near the extent of other clubs and never the really big fish. For the at-the-time bigger name players who've gone, it's seemingly mostly been the other way around - us letting them go knowing we've got replacements in development who would have superseded them anyway.

    Plus, and this is pure speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the players we might expect to be in higher tiers would be willing to make sacrifices to keep others around, especially those who have established careers/big sponsorship deals/who knows, even generational wealth, to supplement their footy income. And in AFLW (rightly or wrongly) there are more ways to make players feel valued than cold hard cash - not talking about cars, but stuff that eases problems with conditions/access to facilities etc. - flexibility, coaches who go the extra mile. All that would be really valued by players.

    You're spot on there.  From my understanding, Tayla struggled with the lockdowns given her family were in another state, and she approached Carlton for support, surprised she didn't get much, other than "Why aren't you playing well?"  To be fair it's hard to perform at your best when mental health is struggling.  She was quite surprised by the amount of money Carlton claimed she was asking for (she didn't ask for that at all) and she told me herself, she didn't make the decision to leave Carlton, they effectively delisted her, which left her absolutely distraught.  It does upset her how she's been completely misrepresented.  She is nothing like she's been portrayed in the media.  All she wants to do is enjoy playing footy with her mates.  

    Lisa, her mum, and I were talking about this on Saturday night.  She told me that if she had it her way, she would have played out her entire career at Melbourne, because she as a mother loved the vibe from Melbourne from the exhibition games, but ultimately it was Tayla's decision to initially play for Brisbane (which I understand, it's her home town) and then Carlton. She's thrilled she's at Melbourne, and getting so much support from the club.  You can see she's much happier, and playing her best footy.

    She's been fantastic since she joined and i reckon the final piece of the jigsaw we needed to win the big one

    At the time we picked her up, I thought she was a bad fit for the club. (Disrupt the cohesion amongst the existing players)

    On reflection, she is no "Diva". Played strong, no fuss footy. Just gets on with it, on or off the field, and appeared to re-established a great comradeship with all.

    I agree with BDA, necessary part of our jigsaw. 

    A lot of people had the same view as you initially had, which is the unfortunate result of that media backlash.  I'm glad a lot of Melbourne supporters have seen what a magic human being she is.  She's been a fantastic piece of that premiership puzzle, both in the forward line and in support to Loz in the ruck.  She's clearly loving her time at Melbourne, and she deserves the happiness this is bringing her.

    Carlton's AFLW player loss after the last 4/5 seasons is almost the "GWS" figure in the AFL.  
    And The Coach keeps on surviving with under achieving results.

    (Even commentates on Fox on his spare days off!!) which is his prerogative. Very complementary about Dees after the GF and during the game.

    Nice to see after all the Lions hype ( such HOT favourites) in Melb and up here (Qld) when in reality we were their equal ( minus 1 point) over the H and A season snd even the two Finals played prior to. 

    Great atmosphere at Springfield  GF Day and very pleasant Lions crowd as well. What a bloodbath it would have been if Pies or Tigers had been our opponent anywhere!

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
