Nah.

This is a poor look. If Selwyn has ordered him to either take it easy or made the call to give it another week then Oliver needs to respect those above him and pull his head in.

If Selwyn is making a decision purely for the best of Oliver's health then so be it.

a star player has a heated conversation with a fitness guy.

the sky is falling!

would happen regularly behind closed doors at all clubs

Sometimes you have a minor niggle that just keeps on keeping on. From the outside a minor hammy like that looks like a standard 3 weeker (which it is for 90%) but for some, every time you try and grade them up in the program they get sore, or can’t get to top speed, or just keep feeling the hamstring at not 100%.

I know it’s popular to make something bigger than it is, which is fair enough given Clarry’s importance to our team. But from my view it seems like he lost all fitness from his infection, has rebuilt that which added another couple of weeks, and is perfectly fine for going on a run with friends around the block but still can’t hit that full pace there. It’s also definitely the hardest phase to rehab.

fingers crossed for next week!

can everyone else speculating and guessing with no medical background please refer to this excellent post

No matter whats going on, Pi## the press off quick smart, or better still, don't let them in period...

With respect, Clarrie is the last person who should have a say in it. If it was up to him he wouldn’t have missed a single game.

He’s a professional athlete staying fit is his job, I think you are giving too little respect to him and in the hypothetical he did put his had up after a week or 2 who is to say he wouldn’t have been fine. Season is effectively on the line now we don’t have the luxury of waiting anymore loose this week and kiss top 4 and a chance at a flag this year goodbye

Well social media is once again flooded with absolutely horrible innuendo and garbage rumours.
Oliver deserves better.

Like what?  Letting him play injured?  As WCW says "morons will be morons".

Like he’s a drug cheat, like he’s on his final strike etc etc

Yes morons will be morons, but when you keep feeding the trolls….

I just hope that mentally he’s resilient enough to handle this rubbish.

Are you serious? I literally thought the only upside of this was that it would put an end to the rumours.

So what now, our head of fitness is essentially acting out a pantomime for the press, with our star player, to throw people off the scent?

He can’t execute what our fitness department need. That’s literally what you can see first hand. He’s frustrated and heartbroken. That people turn it into anything else is a sad indictment on the state of social media.

This article has a video of Oliver running. (My copy skills don't extend to videos).

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/oliver-leaves-training-early-with-hamstring-concern-20230705-p5dlwq.html

At the end Oliver goes for a run.  He gingerly walks back with a tiny limp/favouring his leg.

Make of that what you will.

Maybe Oliver is too keen and trying too hard and not giving himself the chance to fully recover.

The look of the dialogue between Clarry and Selwyn was not a good look.

I understand Oliver's side of frustration and seemingly "pushing" to keep at it. It is Selwyn with his hand out, the agitation and walking away and returning, that I have the problem with. He need's to remain calm and be seen to give feedback that is calculated and delivered in a way that brings the best out of Clarry.

As with all the MFC coaches and staff, "get the best out of the squad", should be the mantra.

Maybe Selwyn knows Clarry well, and that is the approach that is best for him. Just, doesn't look like it.

Without being there and hearing what was being discussed any comment is just pure guesswork at best and hysteria at worst.

My point is Clarrie would absolutely say he was fine, you could put the farm on it. Therefore his estimation of his return date counts for zero.

Maybe because of the class of player he is, it’s easy to forget he’s human. Just as they all are.

No player is happy to be ruled not fit to play, but some take it harder than others. From what I know I’d say we have the top two players on the list of Players who don’t do being on the sidelines well currently on the sidelines. Whereas one of them is reticent about his plight, the other is an open book.

The way I see it, the rumours of illicit drug use swirling around are not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the more outrageous the rumours, the better. Everyone (who matters) knows it’s a complete lie and therefore ought not be brought down by it. Let them wallow in their nastiness and leave our people to work on whatever real issues there are.

Something absolutely stinks. Two months for a minor hamstring strain. I don’t think so.

You keep on ignoring the fact that in the middle of all that he spent a week immobile in hospital.

Medico staff have butchered this one unfortunately. When you think it's suitable to start running 3 days after initially doing it against Port and giving it zero time to actually proper recover then this is exactly what, the injury starts becoming debilitating.

The club needs to come out at some point and give us the full story, because this entire episode is completely unacceptable for a supposedly professional sporting club.

Firstly, allowing Oliver to play on after the initial injury. Then, allowing an infection to get bad enough to result in a lengthy hospital stay, having him train in the cold and wet after the Geelong game, taking him to Alice Springs for no reason, and every other ill advised training session he has done in the past 7 weeks. Finally, the lack of meaningful updates that resulted in the ridiculous rumours that circulated a few weeks ago.

Goodwin needs to shut up and stop saying every Monday that he is a chance to play this week, before he is then ruled out two days later. It reflects badly on him and the club.

You two are doctors/physios?

No?

Then perhaps re-think posts like this.

Lol..

You don't need to be a pysio/doctor to work put how much of a mess this has even handled by the medico team.

Allowing Oliver to play last quarter of the Port Adelaide game after strongly grabbing his hamstring in the 3rd, then bizarrely enough letting him run 3 days after initially doing it.

Doesn't matter whether Oliver has a say or not. Medicos should have power in getting the last say on a players physical well-being.

Yes you do.

You don’t know what impact playing out the 4th had. You don’t know what Clarry reported at the time. You don’t know what impact running on it days later had. You don’t know (or mention) what impact being immobile in hospital had. You don’t know what the doctors asked him to do or what he did in response. You don’t know where he’s currently at or how “bad” things are now.

Really?

People who have strained or torn hamstrings on here whether that's playing footy or athletics (7 over my time) will say to you the best medical advice from a physio or sports science doctor will say that the initial stage of doing hamstring is  the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) stage for the first 2-3 days.

After that, you can start gradually walking and slowly build up and gradually increase load into your legs.

The way he grabbed it so suddenly, evidently proves that there was hamstring damage which the club also confirmed at the time.

So if the club confirmed there was hamstring damage then why on earth was he back running 3 days after actually damaging his hamstring?

Or you you putting the entire blame on Oliver here?

I'm sure he's been strong on wanting to push hard, but the physical and medico staff have enough power over players these days. You can't insist this is all on Oliver himself. When anyone is injured, you're putting all your trust and faith into your medical team who are giving you the right advice and program to get you back to normal again.

Dazz is correct as he almost always is. As iterated somewhere else and as an Ex Phys Eder, I can say.. To allow someone to run 3 days after a  Hammy is LUDICROUS!

No I’m not putting the entire blame on Oliver. I’m not even saying he’s responsible for anything. I’m just saying that without being a doctor or physio and without knowing what actually happened, it’s not fair or reasonable to say the club’s stuffed up.

It doesn’t have to be the club’s fault or Oliver’s fault.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
