Fair enough Saty, no doubt you've seen a lot of him at Casey.

Nonetheless, It's the big time that counts and I'm keen to see perform on the "G.ย

Great news.ย

Concerning still no Pickett news yet. Me thinks we are going to have another Jackson type scenario next season unfortunately. Hopefully he keeps his head in the game unlike Jackson.ย

Hope he stays as he is still a fair way from his top footyย  which will be great. Plus we already have a number of good draft picks for the 2023 draft.

I'm in this camp, too, acknowledging there's a range of other camps. And I'm pleased he's stayed with us, regardless of where he plays, and when.

Seeing him close up at Casey, I'd agree aggression/attack/attitude is the point of difference between him and the obvious - and ultimatelyย unsuccessful - yardstick, Sam W. Beyond that, though, there's been no clear 'banging down the door' indicators; his being so strongly in the conversation has just as much been about the (perceived) deficiencies in the seniors forward line.

Successful leaps from Casey to the seniors have been the exception; Fritsch and (effectively) Gawn (and potentially Turner) are all I can bring to mind, and I wouldn't necessarily have said they were certainties at the time from what I saw, for varying reasons.

However,ย wouldn't it be great if (when?!) Jacobย is the next Bailey or Max!

The voice of sanity in the wilderness.ย

I trust he will get a โ€œrooooeyโ€ cult calling at games.ย

He looks sharp and hungryโ€ฆ feed him with an opportunity Rd.1

I reckon he could be the best MFC player to not have played a game

exciting prospect for sure and our greatest need by far

I reckon seeing JVR at training will push T Mac to have the preseason of his life

we desperately need some competition for spots up forwardย

With T Mac and Brown signed to end 2024ย  season good to give him the extra year.

Great news for JVR well earned and for our future.ย

Can't ย wait till Round 1 2023 ( hope it's vs Pies) with Brodie Lachie H JVR forward and Disco back plus Harry Petts on the forward line.ย

BTW that's a "reset " to make one lick their lips in enthusiasm and football entertainment. Our forwardline could quickly become our greatest strength.

Any one of Tmac BBB Kossie Fritta Kade Chandler ย ANB Spargs and our resting rucks plus premiership quality mids running around with Lingers ย and Lachie H driving the ball in, oh and Salo and Bowser with perfect passing that MCG scoreboard should not be idle for very long times IF Goody and the forward Coach get a good plan together.ย

Isn't it only a 2 year extension on an existing deal?

Or am I mssing something.?

But end of 25 is a great get and says the club is seen by JVR as a place he wants to be in.

Thanks.

Potent young footballer with a difficult task of hitting his straps from the first moment of the first game in the senior team.ย  I hope he builds some reliable consistency in his game at this 'higher' level; at the moment,ย  he's in for some heavy attention from opposition backmen, just like Watts, so I hope he can physically develop rather quickly to at least be able to pay some attention to 'resistance' and 'innovation' with his opportunities. Our forward line needs to 'knit' in season '23 and as part of this, create stronger linkages between the players as well as encouraging JVR's contributing role. His ascent to a KPF is going to lead to interesting times and an increasingly lethal forward set-up compared to the individuality that we have seen within and exposed by our game plan. JVR ain't no Ox - a better-teamed forward line will be his best environment. Golly, I hope he blends well with the teammates who will be the keys to his future successes.

ย

Again "Rooey" signing on so soon after our beneficial trade period is a great plus. Amid all the hype there are a number of very salient factors about this young footballer.

1. He is serious about a career in the Red and Blue, the 2 extra years says that.

2. So far he has as far as we know been in less than 12 months a model recruit with no fuss bravado or ego to overtake his learning and developing lessons.

3. JVR does far more than kick goals. He has some very useful football traits and tricks to add to his determination and attitude and aggression.

4. Marking is only one highlight but his 2nd and 3rd efforts, tap ons handballs and tackling are all part of his package, more like the fashion of a midfielder.

5. Two things other D/Lers ย have highlighted are that he hasn't played A GAME YET ( and why not? ) and a likeness to our previous potentially ( till he suffered countless ACL knee reconstructions ) that restricted him to a shadow of his former glory and not as the potential equal of Wayne Carey on the field!

6. I don't care about either of the above two opinions as it has no bearing on JVR and how good he is or how we are handling his development.

7. He will make it despite any of the hype from us if he is good enough for all the right reasons he appears to have to succeed.

8. Jacob is also a well performed ( in Colts and WAFL and ANC Under Age) ) as a key defender at Full Back so he is versatile as well.

9. Thankfully No one has posted He's only 192cms (or is it 194 or above now? only 195 plus succeed these days in KFP or KDF ) which as we know is rubbish. Give me a well rounded 194 cm KPP rather than a gangly 200cm Who can be pushed out of position or hasn't got great other skills than marking!ย

10. Lastly JVR will hit the gym like never before and a boy will become a man before our eyes ready to take on the world. Not just perform a role on our forward line to finish off a puzzle that might just be with other 2023 improvements the catalyst to our expected sustained success over the next 3/4/5 years. ย No PressureJVR!!

11. Let's hope injury and luck treat JVR fairly for our future footy watching enjoyment and aspirations.ย

This is all a bit over the top. All your points above can apply to many young recruits before they have been drafted. Just read the glowing write-ups of this year's draftees. They tick all your boxes. As you well know only a small % make it. Let the kid make his own way. The FD obviously believe he still had/has some issues and was not quite ready last season.ย

And by the way, I find it interesting that you drool over this kid while at the same time in a previous post you hope that Grundy does not embarrass us/himself in our midfield.ย  It would be nice to have some perspective..

Wow whatโ€™s with the negativity JVR isnโ€™t a late pick or some kid that scraped into the draft. He is a first rounder that played at the highest level throughout his junior years he has had a full year to acclimatise and develop in his new environment surrounded by fresh premiership players, he has played in a VFL premiership in his development year. Hell I am Expecting JVR to come in and play his role in 2023 and beyond, he is 6โ€™4- 6โ€™5โ€ and will be around 96kg when he starts his career and has the grit to make it. 58er wasnโ€™t drooling he was stating some facts about JVR and including his expectations rolling forward as I am stating mine.!!!

Any supporter of the MFC expects and hopes the recruits become the best version of themselves, if that version is a champion like Clayton Oliver then that is even better but some individuals become complacent when they get drafted and end up on the scrap heap.

I hope JVR becomes a champion because that will help us win premierships in the future but he has to want it and put in the work along with the development coaches helping him achieve this goal.

Iโ€™ll wait and see, at the moment Juice Newton has a better playing record.

Speaking of head scratchers, they really didn't need to remake The Naked Gun franchise, and with Liam Neeson. I'm guessing you're like me and very suspect of the move?

The difference here DJR is we have a very public insight to JVR one year down the track with all the boxes I have mentioned ticked in one of the most competitive competitions below the AFL.

I didn't relate the role playing in the last para very well but was trying to say that JVR would play his role ( whether he kicks 10 or 35 goals in 2023 ) as he has many ticked boxes and not just one way he can get you as a high expectant performer in the AFL.ย

His first season was in many ways comparable to Jesse Hogan when he played VFL prior to his AFL debut. A couple of plusses ย here is his he doesn't have to be a saviour as we have climbed Everest but are returning going up a different face!
Also he clearly plays with much less on his mind than what Jesse did over his half decade ย and kicks better in style and is a more rounded player IMO than Jesse at his age although strength will be need to be added to his frame this preseason.

Another plus is the fact that Jesse Jacko and Jacob are all from WA and the former two ย both made it with similar expectations so IMO I have given the glimpse (a season of experience in the system) we have so far backed in JVR with such a solid base of ticked boxes.

You didn't disagree with any specific points but mostly maybe with the end product predicted. Let me say I really think of Gunstan from the Hawks but just as easily he may be a Charlie Curmow or a RF version of Jeremy Cameron. Or he could be a Sam Weid or Josh Schache but I'll go with Gunstan with a touch more style and excitement.ย

Over the top no, realistic yes oh and if he disappoints forward he can replace Petty in defence and play side by side with Disco and our other 2/3 champs defending the goals.

Please don't get me started how well he has gone in his Footy career so far in defence in the top echelon of Junior and just under AFL competitions in State ย and National standing. Some more boxes ticked but no pressure JVR!!ย

About Brodie I haven't said he will fail ย what I have cautioned is his immediate impact due mainly to injury and missing 3/4 of last season and also getting used to our game style and what's expected of him.ย

By July/ August I'll expect both JVR and Brodie to be vital and very useful players in our game style and results and add an extra depth and improvement to our 2022 team possibly enough to bridge the gap Geelong has on us and the rest of the AFL teams at the end if 2022.

No worries DJR I can still drool!!

Rosmanย drools I did ย prior to his 2021 VFL games were over the top but still would have kept him this ย year as a rookie just in case. But injury was not kind also to Fraser.

Howes ย might be another drool pre season or during this year let's hope he earns it!ย

Itโ€™s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the ย Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measlyย 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?ย  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
