Looking forward to the boys coming back in ripping shape, training the house down in preseason and desperate to play for the fans in 2023.

Hmmm….that’s not enough unfortunately. That was the 2022 script.

I just feel disappointed & angry at our leaders tonight

The leadership in the third quarter was non-existent.

Max with Gibby in the post game - we tried multiple things, but when we're trying to win the game with a few minutes to go that's not a position we want to be in.

Almost as if he'd support actually doing something, anything, earlier.

Worse finals series I’ve seen Viney play

Come on mo4 I realise our forward entries aren't the best but (i would love to swear here) how many times did Jacko and that useless all arms and legs bloke named Brown  had chances to mark and were weak as P

I agree with Jackson, but BBB is being asked to do more than he's physically capable of. He's basically playing his role from last year and TMac's role. At one stage in the 1st half he was at half back. He tends to start the game well but tires in the 2nd half.

Our record at the G is just diabolical.  Against top 6 teams this year it’s 1 win 6 losses.  Even last year it was 1 win 2 losses so thanks to COVID we got our flag.

Maybe Goodys famed system just doesn’t work at the G against good teams.

We got lucky the finals were interstate last year. The only time we have played the mcg well under Goodwin was when TMac was on fire and Brown and Weideman were injured.

We don't have high skill level in this current crop of players.  When an opponent matches our contest we are cooked. Teams know if they pressure us we will turn it over MOST of the time.

We'll have the occassional game where it will all click, but it's 1 in 5 at best.

We got lucky one of those games was the Grand Final last year.  That was the exception, not the norm.

Tonight is our norm. 2022 is our norm.

I agree.

We rely too much on players in important roles that don’t have the skill and we impose a  singular game plan on top of that which doesn’t adjust.

Real bummer but that's footy. Still better than being a perennial cellar dweller. I reckon our list is set up for long term goodness and long term Goodwin-ness. This game is tough as anything and nothing can be taken for granted. Didn’t make it this year, have another crack next year and then again the year after. All I ever wanted was a team that competes and, despite this season going down the tube, this is still what that looks like. Go Dees (and c'mon Freo somehow.)

My disappointment will settle. The rage too.

But to lose the same way, again, is just maddening.

We lost 8 games this year. 6 of them all played out the same way - strong start, 20+ point lead, some point midway our opponent lifts and we absolutely fall apart and never look like righting the ship.

Our fitness wasn’t good enough. Our hunger can’t have been strong enough. Our skills weren’t good enough. Our coaching wasn’t good enough.

From 10-0, and after finishing 2nd, we should not be watching prelim finals from home. That is not good enough.

But Titan, why are you surprised??

we have been losing the same way. The demonland posters who said things along the lines of “do the same, and expect a different result is insanity” got Absolutely scolded.

Be nice to see some accountability

17th for pressure acts tells the story this year.

The ruthlessness has gone, they are content they won one last year.

Really hoping we don’t become the next West Coast.

Win an unexpected flag and then go backwards each year at an alarming rate.

It's not the leaders you should be disappointed with.

This is 100% on the coaching staff. They've absolutely butchered our season by their inability to have a plan B in place and also being too conservative at the selection table.

Goody and the rest need a [censored] rocket.

Sounds like a swipe to the coach.

Sure, but I think people are underestimating the physical toll of running deep into the finals right through to a GF and then the reduced turnaround until the next season. Perhaps no accident that both last year's grand finalists are out. I remember Hardwick talking about how hard it was physically to back up after winning a premiership.

Perhaps it also wasn’t super smart of some of the players to train through their break also. We all lapped up the stories of them doing extra sessions, but perhaps they should have switched off and given their bodies some time to recover.

Absolute disaster this year. No other way to describe it. 10-0 start, best list in the comp by a long way, and out in straight sets. Wasted 1 of our 3 best chances we will get in many of our lifetimes

Deserves more than a backhander.

Probably time to give Sparrow more responsibility too. He has done his time getting ready. Time to see if we can develop him into a better player.

He's borderline VFL standard, I'm genuinely not sure what player people are watching?

We should have blooded via Casey another T.Mac , we have several candidates . We stuffed around play the Weid as a forward for a long time only to find that he was a failure , couldn't understand why we re-signed him . Melksham selection was weird , he reached his use by date end of 2020. Jackson should have been dropped at the end of the season due to his lack of commitment to the club i.e not resigning . Goody has been or trying to ride on the success of 2021 , other clubs have worked us out . Winning 6 out the last 14 matches is not good coaching. Why didn't we play Dunstan, we seem to reward out of form players. I am so [censored] off with the Dees and especially Goody because he lack foresight/vision.

We got outplayed.  Especially after half time.  Even if we'd somehow won we wouldn't have been able to match the Cats anyway

We are not good enough and there are zero excuses (or reasons)

Biggest issues remain our forward 50 entries and the ability of our forwards

I'm not sure we've got a midfielder who can deliver the ball into the forward line with precision (consistently)

And apart from Fritsch, our forwards as a collective, are sub par

Kicking deep to the FP?  That's got to go

The 2021 flag is history.  The only thing that matters is the future

Need about 6-8 changes to the list and we need to be prepared to give away some players to gain others who can improve the list

This loss really hurts.  2 finals losses is unacceptable for a reigning Premier

A PF appearance is a pass mark but out with 2 home final losses is a mediocre outcome.  We went out meekly

The strategy of hoping Ben Brown would come good in finals was the biggest mistake of the season. It has been obvious he is cooked as an AFL player for a long time.

He doesn’t need support. He’s just not good enough to be a spearhead of a premiership team anymore.

The season mirrored our worse losses and finals

10 wins in a row to start the season

then more losses than wins

Up early in games with decent leads

Then run down in second halves

Kind of glad it’s over… we were limping to the finish line. Key players on every line seemed rooted.
LJ can go, mini replenish of the list and fill some holes and back at it in 2023.

I think Brayshaw, Viney, Melksham and Gawn should be pretty disappointed with their finals series.

Rivers was exposed in the heat of battle.

BBB, Salem, Lever, Petracca were obviously not fit.

We need an injection of pace from the flanks.

Don't understand how we let Coleman, Rich and Zorko start attacks from half back so easily?

Buy another tall defender and put Petty forward.

Guys to hold their head up high in the finals: Oliver, May, Petty, Langdon and...

May struggled for large parts of tonight though. Played a brilliant game on Buddy except for the 50m. But like last year and much of this year, when the ball was on the ground or the ball came in quickly, May panics.

Max's dreadful tap work gave up 4 goals tonight.

Controversial, but if he's not taking it out of the ruck, which is a good play for him, his tap work is a liability. Opposition teams learnt to read his taps years ago.

Max and mids never seemed on the same page and it meant he would be tapping to space where we'd be out of position. Danger time.

It's not a one week thing either. A fit Max is exceptional around the ground, elite, best in the game, but at stoppages he's too predictable.

What do you want us to do? Round them up and smack their bottoms for every face palm of a post that noted how our pressure compared to last year was through the floor and I am on board…

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
