    Some bizarre points from Jake - firstly that Dusty is getting paid way more than Hawkins. Hawk is 35 and no-one thought he would even be playing at this age let alone playing very well.  Dusty is coming off 3 norms. Couldn't think of a worst comparison. The other two examples are Selwood who may retire this year or next and Danger who is 32.  Of course you get paid less when you get older, it is not some sort of team ethos. Danger and the like raked in the coin in their prime.

    The fact is the Cats have very few gun players in their prime so salary cap is easy to manage. J Cameron is the only one I can think of right now.

    No insights for me aside from high draft picks having large contracts on potential (why we should feel OK about LJ leaving). I thinks the Cats are where they are due to a quality culture, very good coaching, quality drafting at late picks. However they have not won the flag as they lack top end young talent (high draft picks)

    If your goal is to do well in the H&A, then they have been successful. However 10 years on top with only 1 losing GF to show for it is failure to me.

    In finals they don't even get to play at home even when they've earnt it due to the AFL wanting money, which I think is unfair

    As already mentioned, they do Judd - Visy like deals but with wives and girlfriends. Prior to that, it was land deals with Costa.

    Is it still  rule that players over 30 can be paid x, but only x/2 is attributed to the salary cap or is my memory failing me 🤣

    Title days it all. Call me when it says "How Geelong keeps winning flags". There's no way I'd trade our last 10 years for their's, or the next 10 for that matter.

    He's dislikeable for sure, but Chris Scott is also a very good coach. No doubt he's a major reason why they consistently finish top 4

    Completely unique ground. Only they know how to play it. They play many Victorian sides there too.

    I never said they didn’t deserve a home ground. I just said they have the best home ground advantage of any side in the competition. 

    And the AFL is correct. You cannot host finals in a stadium that holds such a small capacity. They don’t host finals in Marvel either.

    Geelong itself is a hole, but it does have the beaches nearby.

    So Melbourne's not a hole 😂

    I know where I'd prefer to live.
    And it wouldn't be "in" Geelong.

    It’s the skewed opponents they play at the Cat Box that I despise 

    We get shunted down there every year, without fail, whilst a select few other Club would have no idea where Jeelong is. They have not played there since the 90’s

    It is a disgusting advantage they have.

    I think someone posted more details earlier in the thread. It is substantially skinnier than any other ground (116m) and very long (170m) with strangely shallow pockets. It really favours their zone defence, and should actually assist ours I would have thought. Where it really killed us last time is that it is a lot easier to congest the exit from defence. 
     

    i actually think they played us super well in the last game. The ground did give them some assistance but they legitimately outplayed us.

    Interstate teams have home ground advantage on account of the crowd and noise. Adelaide Oval and Optus Stadium aren't difficult to play. GMHBA is literally designed to Geelong's advantage. They are the only professional team in the world with an actual *playing field* advantage given how ground stadiums vary here, but there's is as if it was drawn up free hand on a blackboard.

    For what it’s worth, I seem to remember a number of hawthorn players taking well below what they were worth in their prime. Sewell was being hunted by clubs and stayed for less money and Lake took about $150,000+ pay cut to join the hawks from the dogs. 
     

    For us, it’s going to have to be our mid tier players that do a lake/Sewell and knock back better offers from other clubs. If Jackson wants more money over success, then good luck to him. It’s just how things go.

    Players have to be prepared to give up some pay if they want to keep the other good players around them.

    Maldonboy38 on another thread  summed up the Selwood celebration succinctly, showing due respect for his long reign as a champion footballer. But correctly questioned the Selwood legacy as being flawed due to his poor sportsmanship and chronic propensity for 'plaint.

    The fatuous ‘warrior’ mythology spouted by a Fox Sports promo was debunked immediately by the very definition provided. Duckwood clearly doesn’t measure up. But the ‘heroic’ visuals of copious releases of blood 🩸 from the captain’s ‘battlefield engagements’ recall a darker more decadent past.
     

    Sleepy old Geelong on the Bay, reminiscent of Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast. Is redolent of Bram Stoker’s old haunts set anew in the Antipodes. GBH stadium despite copious tax dollars spent resembles a faux-translyvanian architectural fantasy. Suitably doomed by its deformed dimensions. It is is referred to locally as “Castle Dracula” by the cretins that habitually inhabit the ‘bleachers’ at home games.

    In response to the eternal question; How Jeerlong stays competitive?

    This mob’s long reign as finalists without the fulfilment of a premiership cup' is akin to a the theme of dissolution in the movie Interview with a Vampire. Lestat (Selwood) offers Louis (Dangerfield) to transform from a  crow to a vampire cat in the vain hope of premiership glory. Which appears almost tangible but remains elusive. Any transfusion of youth is like turning troubled talent like Tyson Stengle (Kirsten Dunst) into a vampire pussycat.

    Which brings to mind another question. Where does Chris Scott fit in the bigger picture?

    I think that they are lucky being a team originally from a country town to be able to play in the AFL.  There is no other representative team in the AFL  from a country town and cities like HOBART or DARWIN should be considered to take Geelong's place.

    They don't over pay ruckman.  Want a dynasty/retain your list? Get yourself midfield stars but dont spend your cap on the tallest bloke in the centre square.

    so maybe AFL grounds should have standard dimensions? Obviously if their home ground has a certain characteristic they would play a style to suit it. 

    problem is for them, they don’t play finals on it

    Like to see them get Swans in finals. 
    Swans have good finals record v cats especially since Nick Davis game. 
    Swans also have good record v Cats, even at KP. 
    In Covid, Swans were happy to use KP as neutral home ground in VIC - not MCG or Telstra

    I am sure the Jeelong FC have a lot to do with it. They have had an armchair ride ever since Costa and Cook took control

      The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
