Exactly!   This makes me wonder if our judgements on here of how loud other teams are comes from us watching them on TV.  Whereas our judgements of how quiet we are comes from being at the ground.

Maybe other teams' fans aren't as noisy at the ground as they might sound on tv.

This is a great point, Luci. But then some on here maintain there is a difference not in terms of the cheer squads but the crowd in general.

Yeah that's a trick used often for the interstate games as well.

Definitely. I watched our Alice Springs game vs. Port on TV and I knew we didn’t have a huge squad there yet they seemed super loud. It sounded as though there was 10 times the number of people.

I wanted to point out that after Sparrow's goal in the third, the atmosphere was electric. Not just the celebration of the goal but even before the next bounce. The crowd was up and about like willing the team to keep scoring ala "Bang Bang Bang", which we should've... 😩

I was there on Friday night, level 4 Q1 front row. I watched bits and pieces of the replay and the sound at the G' was louder than what it seems on the TV.

I am more of the idea that the TV actually diminishes the sound level, like you loose the reverberation that is created by the G'.

Channel 7 turns the crowd sound down so you can hear the commentators - unlike the radio broadcasts.

Nice of them to assume we actually want to hear them.

I think that our Melbourne fans (as in, Dees fans in Melbourne) are coming off an experience unlike any other fanbase, in terms of watching a drought-breaking premiership from afar. Some of the "boost" that fans get from success was naturally somewhat dispersed. I think a lot of people don't know quite how to be in these uncharted waters.

I'd also say that our fans are hesitant to be vocal when things are going badly - it's a learned response that hasn't quite been unlearned yet (although I'm not sure that it's any worse than at other clubs with similar histories). Also I'd wager that our fans are, on average, smarter about the actual rules of the game and less interested in yelling ball every five seconds, which comes off as less passionate...but I might be biased in that opinion.

One thing we do and have done consistently even in the dark years is show up at a great rate. I'd say the core of our members are among the MOST rusted on in the league, because how on earth else have they stuck around?

Not sure where this page sourced their info and if it's verified, but it certainly goes counter to the narrative around Dees fans attendance this season:

Anyone need motivation to attend the game?

Imagine next year we are playing Geelong away in a final. We have a recent history of only getting 45K to a final.

Suddenly we find ourselves playing a final at Kardinia Park!

GET TO THE GAME!

That’s right, Dub! Also, this may well be the last time we get to watch our beloved Dees play live, until a practice match in six months time. Of course we all hope not, but it could possibly be so.

Yep, get on down and get on board.

If we're looking for a crowd comparison in the sporting world we might be more like Arsenal. Their previous home was known as the Highbury Library. As supporters I'd say we're more like Fulham.

You’re bang on - we are more like Arsenal in noise, demographic like Fulham!

A few Pimms down the Sloaney Pony and off to the Cottage: “Rah, Rah, Rah, we’re going to smash the oiks!”

Very different to their near neighbours who since Ken Bates sold his £90 million debt to Abramovich for £1 have attracted mostly glory hunting chavs.

They have - almost became the Man City of London, with everyone jumping on board, including the swathes of local moleskin-wearing rugger buggers who got involved during Cool Britannia.

Oi!  Chelsea fan here (since '88)

can't say i disagree with your post but thought i needed to fly the flag a little.  :-)  After Tuchel got sacked, I'm actually at my lowest level interest ever.  I have been a die-hard fan over the years

You can bet this mob will be there on Friday.

I wonder if this is the same David Williamson who posts (used to post?) on here and on Demonology and who was known by the username dawi at one point.

It does not matter if we have 10k or 90k tomorrow night the cats will get a final at home soon.

I hear ya DubDee. I used to work with rusted on Blues fans who stood at the Shed End in the old second division long before they became a depository for dodgy Russian money.

I'm looking for a championship team to follow at the moment so i can get my love for the game back

I miss the old Zola/Poyet days

*sorry all, I'll stop the round ball comments

The noise at that point was incredible.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
