POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Geelong

So if you didn't know the result, but were told Hawkins and Cameron kicked 1 between them you would have just assumed we'd won.

What can I say? I completely expected this result. Two teams coming off a 5 day break, one plays a real physical and grueling game over in Adelaide, the other has a bruise free training run at this very ground. One forward line struggling, the other buzzing. Advantage Cats. Throw the loading theory in there for both teams and you've got one lacklustre standard of game.

I'll get this out of the way. A lot of people like Thursday night football for some reason. I know it's harder for some to fill the time in their pitiful lives themselves so we need to create this new shiney object called Thurs night footy so all these drones are happy. Well as a result of this and crappy fixturing, the game of the year turned out to be anything but. Geelong looked that bit slicker in the end.

We did start with a bang but the moment Bowser gave up that holding the ball we were in for a night of crappy, crappy decision making and execution. So many skills can be put down to fatigue it's not funny. Please no-one act like we were 'a bit off for some reason'. You know the reason, it's obvious.

I couldn't give a rat's ar*e about this result tonight and the little boost it will give those nitwits down the highway. We were so crap tonight and still kept the twin towers to 1 goal. You think they will beat us with midfield and smalls goals again? Ha!

We had a lot of crap performers, let's not hide from that. May was garbage early, was literally a coach killer. His influence is nothing when he's not performing. Gawn was not good, I'm not a doctor but I wasn't thrilled about him coming back early. Salem was crap, one of his most wayward kicking games. Spargo was down, Bedford was non-existent, Bowey very average. It felt like half our side was Under12s players chasing the footy and when they hit a target once in a blue moon you felt so proud.

To the positives, Pickett worked his socks off. Honestly thought he'd nailed that shot but I don't think we would have won regardless. Viney and Clarry worked hard. Petracca took his chances, the backline held firm I thought Lever and Petty did their bit.

Brayshaw is some player now. As of right at this minute he's the one I want to retain. Thought Jordan was crap.

Thurs night football stinks, if you like it then more power to you. I'm gonna go sleep in a cave for 9 days or whatever it is till our next game.

I don’t know why people bother going to that ground. It’s an horrific experience. I’m actually annoyed with the club that they don’t stick up for us as supporters and force the AFL to not schedule us there. Had the game been at a better ground 25k+ extra supporters could have gone.

Or, if the club won’t stick up for us, force the state Government to build a terrible stadium at Casey and we can play Geelong there every year for the next 25 years. If it’s good enough for them it’s good enough for us.

We were outplayed. We will get them at the MCG. No doubt

their poor kicking and the umps kept us in it for a while. We did well to get back in the last Q.

no need to panic

They're an awful bunch there truly. Extremely precious about their seats, how much noise you make etc - they're so used to having 95% of the crowd that it seems to personally offend them if you cheer for the other team

Last time I went there (that horrible thumping on a miserable night in 2019) I was stunned that they had the loudspeaker playing a clap and cheering track after their goals. It was a packed house and they still needed to artificially create an atmosphere.

They owned us tonight.

Their tackling pressure was insane

Very smart how they made our rucks redundant almost. One mark between them!

About time he gets called out for the [censored] selfishness that's cost us goals.

As soon as this happened I felt physically ill. Sick burn Bayley, he's just not seeing anyone in that 50 right now..

It would never happened but I'd genuinely drop him purely for that act.

Let's remember that this has been an ongoing theme with Fritsch all year and not just off tonight..

That was God awful.

Paid $90 for a crap seat in a glorified shelter shed, and the dees serve that up.

They smashed us.

Thanks for flying the flag, don't stress the money, your good karma account is full,  along with every other supporter who travelled. (Have only done it twice for 0-2)

Good on you for making the effort to get there :- as painful as it must have been.

There's a recipe for beating us

Crowd the inside ball hard, and don't let us escape. We don't have clean hands to navigate this pressure.

Roll over us around the contest, and push forward...

We have good defence but lack the movement from defence outside (our switch is dead) to combat this...

We'll choke eventually

Yep and it was worse because he went with a dumb dribble kick. I really hope Goody shows this.

Pickett could do 1000 times more than he does. A lot of ball watching, standing back and doing nothing. He has incredible talent. But recommend use it!

Is the only selfish player in our team :- Needs to stop

Nah, Geelong is laughing at anyone paying that for a ticket at that stadium. $90 gets you premium seating and a meal at the MCG. They're taking the [censored].

That wasn’t the point … if you are able to go

& choose to go.. I still applaud that … I’m

guessing you go to support your team & if it boosts Geelong’s coffers …so be it .. not all games are our home games & I’m very happy that our supporters go to games at oppo venues to support our team !

I love max but compare tonights game to his last 2 against the cats was chocolates to boiled lollies.

But I'm sure he'll be better for the run

Blame it in Bailey huh?

take a look, he wasn’t even looking inward, so he didn’t see the option. If he kicks the goal like usual everyone is happy

That's the point. Didn't even look for a teammate, eyes only for the goals, and it's a habit of his.

He didn't kick the goal. Everyone is not happy. Especially Langdon.

Tonight was so disappointing. They didn’t come out like against the lions. Pathetic. They are capable of winning this. But they didn’t.

Of course I'm going to blame it on Bailey.

Which part of this are you not understanding? I'll explain further in simple terms so you understand better.

He didn't look inward because his eyes were already fixated on the goal. He was on a tough angle and his first option should have been to look inboard for another option as he was on a tough angle. It's a simply footy rule 101 to always look  inboard at what available options there is before going the difficult kick for goal if need.

As Jordan Lewis said, the fact he didn't even bother to look for other options is a concern.

It sums up his attitude towards the team and I'm hating it.

Can we give these jumpers a rest? Melbourne has no white in our colours but we decided to bring this in because of an apparent need to clash with Geelong's jumper.

Not me.

I was right behind him. Tbe fact he didn't look inboard makes it worse.

I was, and remain  ropeable with him.

And bloody hell, why a dribble kick?

No they wore it for NAIDOC week. Fantastic show of respect from a club that is leading the way with it's Indigenous connections.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
