AFLW PREGAME: Grand Final vs Adelaide

Change the Umps. Watched the last quarter and it was appalling. A Crow forward got a free kick and goal for pushing her opponent square in the back.

No change for mine.

We missed out on watching Jonsey and Jetts lift the cup.

I'd really love to see Daisy and Paxy do it. They thoroughly deserved a flag.

I take Taylor Harris' quiet game as a bit of a positive in that we won without much input from her.

Love watching Goldy down back.

Shame we gotta go to Adelaide but I think we can go pretty close with the team that played today.

No change surely they played a great game looking forward to the grand final. How good is Bannon?

Watching the two games, thee crows/freo game did not seem as intense as ours.  Far less pressure, but the. crows setup around the ball really well.

Crows have a lot of very strong girls in their team and more than a few players who handball really well out of packs. They will be hard to beat.

Taylor Harris didn’t get much from umpires, seemed to get blocked, held, pushed all game.

Hopefully Demons have a day out like against Freo and bring home the chocolates!

I don't see any reason to change this team. Shelley Scott has been down on her usual high standards this year but she still competes hard and at least halves contests in F50. Similar to TMac in the mens team. Plays a role. She stays in

The Crows are brutes around the ball in particular Marinoff and Hatchard. We have to try and match them as best we can and get on the outside. Bannon is the key. If we can find her in space she will burn off the Crows defenders

It will take a mighty effort to win this one but i have faith

Our game was just as bad.  HTB rules changed in this match from that which was applied for the whole season.  Non decisions...play on...play on.  We need umpires who umpire.

Lily Mithen was necked by Davidson, lifted then rag-dolled into the ground.  That would incur a multi week suspension in Rugby League, yet all we heard was ...play on!

Mithen plays for frees, but as you say above, Davidson twice her size, put UFC move on her and no free or report. After KKJ in press during the week that no report for rugby tackle was pathetic!!

HTB is shocking, out in play take two steps get grabbed ball spills out, your done! However try and take on a few players around or through a pack, get tackled just drop ball or one handed throw like Lions in girls or Dogs in AFL, nothing to see here. Definitely most annoying interpretation.

Other one for me is seeing player push someone out of marking contest while ball is 20 metres away and just waved on.

Umpiring incredibly tough job, as only see a bit over half the action/vision, but the above and frees in the ruck drive me nuts!

The umpiring is very erratic in ALFW but at least the bad calls go against both teams evenly. There is no obvious bias as opposed to the ridiculous free ride the doggies mens team get from the umps

No change in personnel. But maybe some role shifts.

I reckon Zanker could do a quick 2-3 minute job on ball at the start of quarters just to hit some bodies and be physical. Before a break then her ruck minutes. The Crows have big bodies and we might need to just match fire with fire especially early.

Maddy Gay might be needed down back earlier in the match too, Zanks on ball could free her up just for a short rotation maybe to settle the backline early. If she takes some backline minutes they could throw Sherriff forward to provide another speedy runner, allowing Banno to sit deeper and hopefully snag a few out the back.

And they just aren’t getting enough from a talented player in Hore who could have a go on ball if they take a risk.

That’s a lot of moves. But I think it’s paramount that we’re flexible and organised for a really strong crows start. We played the Brisbane game just about perfectly by keeping it tight early until our running game got a chance. Adelaide are stronger and at home, we have to be even better to keep it tight.

I think the umpires seemed top go by the mantra of "putting the whistle away" in finals.

I get the idea of letting the game flow but there were some obvious ones that needed to be given.

All they did was end up with a congested game that wasn't helped by the conditions.

As for the spectacle, if we weren't playing and I didn't have an emotional attachment I wouldn't have got more that 5 mins in before turning off.

Have to be prepared for a lift in physicality, a both giving it and taking it. Adelaide have tended to outmuscle us of late.

Montana lost her 1 game suspension appeal.  Understandably she is shattered that she isn't playing on Saturday.

Adelaide have the option to appeal further, presumably to a non-AFL court...?

Anyone know what impact her absence may have on the Crows team?

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
