Kelly left purely for family reasons - a couple of his kids had medical issues & he & his missus wanted family support in caring for them. Clark was dissatisfied with the amount of games he was getting.

Yep, so that's my point then if you go back to my original post.

Especially after success, players can often have different reasons for moving clubs IMO.

Success isn't the only thing that attracts them to a specific place of employment.

I've certainly had thoughts that echoed my belief around the year that James Frawley was playing forward - thus exposing another player to the back line (and our back line learning not to have James in it).

I'm getting a distinct 'chip' vibe about Brayshaws move to half back.

This is the whole interview.  First half MND, second half the Dees and Gus:

He trained the whole preseason for the wing.  As we know he went down back when Salem was injured.

What happens to Gus when Salem returns might be significant in his decision.

Meanwhile, love his focus on the team and getting better at the job he has been given.

Who do we think offers more as a first choice on baller  Viney or Brayshaw? 

My suspicion is protecting Gus RE: Concussion and keeping him on the park has been part of the decision to get him more on the outside, as well as his obvious quality on the inside and outside.

Maybe it's more than a coincidence that the compensation pick that we got for Frawley was used to acquire Brayshaw. Spooky hey?

BTW, I totally disagree with your logic. We're in premiership mode, not list rebuilding mode, as we were when Frawley departed.

Viney, and it's not close.

I think we'll find out once the CBA has been signed. Post that, there isn't much reason for a delay.

I still don't think Gus has any lure to WA beyond Andrew. His parents and long term partner are both here. I doubt Danielle Frawley, his partner, will want to move to WA either.

I do however think that Gus is in the sweet spot of his career, he is playing wonderful footy, is extremely versatile and there would be many Victorian clubs happy to gain his services for a lot of money, and a lot more midfield time, if this is what he wants.

So the decision comes down to what he wants out of the rest of his career, because midfield time and top dollar is probably not something he will get at Melbourne, and that is just the reality of being a top football club filled with midfield stars and a tight salary cap to juggle. 

I don't want to lose anyone, but of the 3 big guns who need to be re-signed, Oliver and Jackson take priority over Gus and I suspect the club feels the same way.

I could very reluctantly come to terms to losing Gus as long as it wasn't to Geelong or Essendon.

At least if he left, we could match an offer and force a trade because the best AFL comp pick we will get is in the high teens.

That’s quite the long bow to draw

Chip knew he was leaving. 

Gus is playing back as Salem is injured. Who else could we put there? Certainly not a bloke like Harmes. Gus has amazing versatility

kidding obviously. The bloke is so genuine. Nothing in that interview aside from a bloke concentrating on winning footy matches and waiting til mid year or later to sign the most important contract of his life. Nothing wrong with that. He will stay for sure unless we don’t offer him a reasonable deal or have cap issues

Gus is a key part of our club and played a huge part in our premiership.  He’s got great mates at the footy club and a definite profile in and outside the club.  The joy last week when he kicked the goal was an example that he enjoys his footy and enjoys being at the Demons.  I’m optimistic once the CBA gets worked through that Gus and Jacko will sign on. 

My prediction is that Gus will not only sign up for more, but he will be appointed joint or outright vice captain next year. And if it wasn’t for Max I’d have him as captain.

It's not Gus' or Goody's mid-week interviews which offer the bread crumbs but I think the latter's post-match one. 

Goodwin was strangely less than his usual effusive self when asked about Brayshaw's move to the backline.

Paraphrase: "Brayshaw has been moved here and there and done so with aplomb. Do you see that as a huge sign of maturity?"

Goodwin: "It's just an expectation we have that when you play at Melbourne that's what you do." 

 

That is an incredible presser to give RE: Gus if the deal isn't either already done, or well on the way. Goody has always been pretty honest with that sort of stuff so for him to come out and say he expects Gus to be a Melbourne player for most  or all of his career can only, in my mind speak to an incredible confidence he isn't going anywhere. 

Very reassured by Goody’s presser. You can always take him at face value. It seems unlikely Gus is going.

If we’re trying to protect him from concussion I’m not sure having him play half back and take brave marks in front of key forwards leads who clobber him on the way through is the best way to do it. He tools some rippers in front of the saints forwards last week and copped some nasty hits for his trouble…

I'd much prefer to lose Brayshaw than Jackson though. If we lost Jackson, are we going to be the next Geelong and spend the next 10 years trying to find a ruckman?
